Hi
My 15 month old daughter has been diagonised with a rota-virus gastro infection.
The doctor advised me to be cautious about her diet and said normally it takes about 6 weeks for a child to get back on track. :(
Anyone else had this experience? Can you advice me as to how I can try to minimise her weight loss (as she is already underweight) and tell me whats the best way to re-introduce other foods in her diet and on what basis? (I hope im making sense!)
Im really worried about my little bub and any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Bye.

my ds1 got gastro around the same age it was nasty:( the best way to introduce solids is plain foods liek those fruti gels and jellys for a few days (and soups too) and things like plain toast. tehn slowly introduce other foods. it took my ds1 about 3 weeks to be able to handle all foods.

Just try to keep her fluids up, my Jack Jack had that when he was about 6 months old and it lasted for ages.
Try to keep his fluids up and well rested and it should go by quicker.

I don't have any advice for you, just wanted to say hope she recovers quickly.:hugs:
Have to say hearing you story makes me glad I got the Rotatix Syrum for my daughter, ppl told me I was being overcautious and that it was a waste of $. ($230) but as far as I'm concerned it was money well spent, just a bummer it wasn't around when your bub was younger.
I have just been through this one with 2 of my sons. They are a little older than your little one, but it took them down quickly and heavily. When they first wanted to eat I just gave them whatever they wanted, and slowly got them back onto regular foods. I did give them an acidophilus supplement to help their little digestive tracts to recover more quickly and it really seemed to help. My youngest son has put his weight back on really quickly (in about 2 weeks) but my older son is still 2 kg under his previous weight.
I hope your little one is feeling better really soon.

Oh you poor things. It is such a horrible virus. In regards to food just stick to bland easy to digest foods. Like grated apple, jelly, crackers, toast, and bland vegies. Try to limit dairy as much as you can for a little while then just slowly introduce more foods as she gets better. The acidofilous(sp) capsules are a great idea too (cant remember who suggested it in their post:thumbsup: )

I had 2 children in hospital last year with rotavirus and it is scary hey. Anyway, I was worried about what they ate and the pead told me to feed them anything they want. His opinion was the quicker they get a normal diet the better. My son who is 3 was really bad (thought we may lose him) but they recovered very quickly with a normal diet. I thought it was strange to give them normal food but I trusted the doc and they got better fast.
Good luck, I am thinking of you, it is a very nasty virus.

Thanks for your relpies!
My doc told to keep away from practically everything. even bread. dd loves bread and keeps asking me for it. should I give it to her?
Can they get a rotavirus infection a second time? Will it be of use if I get her vaccinated after she recovers?

My DS#1 had this when he was 18 months old and he and I were hospitalised in isolation for a week. He could not tolerate food at all so I started him on very weak apple juice and slowly built it up to 100% over the week. It took him about a month to get back to normal. Hoping this helps you a bit, I know what it's like to look at them and there's nothing really that you can do.

The Rotarix Syrum had to be given before 6 months so unfortunately you've missed the boat.
Hop DD is feeling a bit better today.
ok - firstly - what is rotavirus?? and how do kids get it???
I'm worried now .. I thought that gastro was bad enough (how does it differ from gastro?? and could you HAVE rotavirus and just think it is gastro???)
thanks (and sorry to take over the thread)

Rotavirus is still gastroenteritis but just a particularly nasty form which can lurk around for weeks.
Usually the diarrhorea will be quite offensive (really smelly) and yellow.
ive just got back from the hpsital with my little one who has gastro or rotavirus, i thin its just bad gastro....they said can give bland foods like rice white pasta white bread carrots bananas and can also give yoghurt just not too much sweet and sugary stuff and keep up the fluids is the main thing
i had been giving him arrowroot biscuits and jellies as he would eat those but ive not been giving them in the last few days as prob they are too sweet
its yuik this gastro i am so over it!!

Rotavirus is a form of gastro but more nasty. It eats up the lining of the stomach and it takes about 6 weeks for the child to completely recover from the illness (as compared to normal gastro which takes a couple of weeks or so). The child can also develop a fever with rotavirus, and gets dehydrated much quicker than normal gastro infections.
And I guess there's more restriction on the food you can give them and have to be more cautious than you'd usually be.
