Hi.
My 7 month old Daughter has gone off her solids. I started her at at 5 1/2 months and she started off well. Not having much, but a couple of teaspoons of farex. Then I also gave her orange vegies, then mixed in some avocado- which she really seemed to like. Then a couple of weeks later, she went off her solids all together, and wouldn't want any, shutting her mouth and turning her head and making noises to let me know she doesn't want it.
Somedays she will have a teaspoon at meal times, but that's about it. I've tried her on the Apple and Oatmeal cereal out of a jar and she seemed to like it a little somedays. Now she's not even interested in Farex.
She is FF having 240ml bottles 4 times during the day, 4 hourly, and a 180ml bottle when she wakes during the night (she won't finish a 240ml bottle during the night). With her day bottles tho, she drinks half, then will have the other half about an hour or so later. She has been doing this with her bottles since she was 4 months.
Anyway, I am wondering if there are any techniques that I could be using to get her to eat again. We don't eat tho at the same time as her as my DH is working still. I've tried giving her a spoon to play with as I am feeding her, but she still won't open her mouth to eat. She doesn't seem to like her highchair either, so I put her on my lap at the table and fed her and it worked a little better, but I don't want to get into that habbit.
I'd love some advice. thanks.

Dear Kell,

I’m wondering if your daughter has increased her formula intake recently, or if she is still having the same amount each day as before you started solids.

Once solids are introduced from approximately 6 months, bubs should be having around 100mL / kg weight each day. Your bub is having around 1100mL in 24 hours – which would equate to her being 11kg. The average 6 month old girl is around 7kg. This means that about 700mL of formula in a day should be adequate (depending on your bub’s actual weight). Your bub should ideally be hungry enough to have up to 3 solid meals a day also.

So, your little girl is probably just not hungry to be bothered with solids. Talk to your doctor or CHN nurse about a new, appropriate feeding schedule for you and your bub. This may be dropping whole feeds or reducing the amount at each feed.

If your little is capable of taking solids (which you have already seen), then I would suggest that hunger is the key. Letting her hold a spoon is certainly also a good thing to do.

Please seek further advice from your doctor, CHN or a paediatric feeding specialist if decreasing her formula feeds does not solve the problem.
