also, if you're going to be hanging them out inside and you're worried about them not getting uv on them, there is a laundry rinse called "canesten" (can get it at coles and woolworths).
it basically sanitises them and also makes them nice and soft!
i just use it if the naps won't be hung out in the sun - goes in the fabric softened dispenser.

i dont think its a dumb question.
i told my cousin that the next baby i have will be in BBH nappies and that you dont soak just dry pale them and she said. 'how do you steralise them' and i drew a blank.
i told her id get back to her on that, now i can
Just to elaborate a bit more and to comment on

Ok, sanitising. Basically our society these days over sanitises, we have come to think that things have to be ultra clean which is starting to cause issues in terms of childrens immune systems and also environmentally with the overuse of disinfectants contributing to the evolution of multi-resistant bacteria which are a severe threat to the ill and hospitalised. Detergent gets rid of nearly 100% of bacteria. Sunlight photo-oxidises surface bacteria and washing at 60 degrees basically pasteurises your laundry. Put simply the application of a heat process, either a hot wash, drying in the sun or in the drier will sufficiently sanitise the nappies.
(In this explanation I have actually paraphrased Waawa from elsewhere)

i TOTALLY agree. i really do!
however, when i first was washing naps i was washing in cold water, and had no drier so it was either hang in the sun or inside. and sometimes now i still wash in cold.
so cold washing and drying inside meant i'd use canesten.
otherwise the sun is my friend

... and I notice you've toned down my rant against antibacterial agents... :)

We've developed dozens of expensive chemical liquid rinses, lotions and powders to soak our nappies in...
But still nothing is as effective and safe for baby as letting your nappies hang out in the sun. It has the added bonus of eliminating stains and whitens them too:thumbsup:

Sometimes there are dark-stained nappies that have been sitting there for the full 2 days since last wash, and if the sun doesn't get them out in the first go, then it definitely does the second go:thumbsup: I just use it again, with the stain and most likely, Elouise doesn't poo on that same nappy again, so it's just a wee and then the sun gets the rest of the previous stain out...
Just to add, it's only my cheappie terry Fluffies that ever get stained - pockets (even with white inners) and my fitteds, don't seem to get stained. It all washes out in cold water:thumbsup:

Hasn't happend yet :D :D Oh, once a terry flat that I was using to stuff a pocket nappy with had a stain- I ran it through the next load of washing and the sun got it out that time
But my BBB's, my pockets- nup, never a stain  And I don't use liners in my BBB's either.
