View Full Version : Can a baby sleep in a travel cot
I will be going overseas for 6 weeks when my baby will be 2 months old and I do not know what I will need for it to sleep in, whilst trying to keep luggage to a minimum. Can a baby sleep in a travel cot for that length of time, or is there a travel bassinet on the market at all? Hiring equipement isnt really an option either as we will be travelling to 3 countries whilst away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jscriv,
My Harry has slept in a port-a-cot heaps of times before. Although these have only been for a couple of nights at a time. However, I have known babies to sleep in them for a week at a time. I don't know about 6 weeks though. I did read in Practical Parenting mag that there are new port-a-cot sheets out. They are padded for extra comfort, so this may help. Talk to your child health nurse or a chiro about it, they may help you too.

Hi :o
My son is now nearly 10 months old and by the time he was 6 months he had been to France, Vienna, USA, Dubai, UK and then over here to Australia, he has spent most of his young life in a travel cot and as long as it is a good make and model there is no reason why they cannot. now that he is older I pad the under mattress with 3 pillows that go across the base to add extra comfort. Make sure that the one you have has a thick mattress to begin with. Good luck with your travels and enjoy it, I did.

Hi jscriv
Lachlan has only ever slept in one for a max of about a week - and I do find that he is a bit more restless/uncomfortable...but not to the point that he doesn't sleep at all or anything. If I was to use one for longer I would buy an extra mattress which I've seen at baby shops/toys r us and the like......instead of just the thin one that comes with the cot - which does not seem to vary in quality depending on the brand from what I've seen.
Good Luck ;)

Hi my baby slept in one for about four weeks non-stop over a holiday we took while mid-move and she was fine. I bought an extra mattress though that helped which may not be practical for you as extra luggage. One thing I can suggest is to try it out before you go away. I put my baby in it for day sleeps a couple of days before we left and she went from hating it to sleeping almost as well as she did in her cot. Good luck and hope you and bub have a great trip.
