View Full Version : What is a catergory 3 allergy?
My daughter had a blood (RAST) test for allergies. Her results came back with a catergory 3 egg allergy. The nurse who gave us the result on the phone was unable to tell us exactly what a catergory 3 allergy meant and we cannot contact the doctor for approx. 2 weeks.
Does anyone know what a catergory 3 allergy means? Is this a ranking of allergy serverity, if so is 3 a high or low level allergy?
Any info would be greately appreciated, Thanks CJ

My Ds is in catergory 4 for dairy and egg and the doctor said it is a servere allergy.
The higher the number the worse the allergy.
Ds was 1 with peanuts and 3 with tuna too.

 thanks that helps me understand it. DP has been reading this section of bubhub and he has been trying to find out but has so far came up with zero:laughing:
You should ask for a skin scrape test...they are much more accurate than the blood tests...especially at a young age.
DD has an epi-pen because of the type of reaction she has. If your DD is a kid that will vomit if she eats egg then she's not anaphalyxis, no matter how high her score is. Kids that are anaphalyxis are the ones that react to their allergy's by swelling etc. This is what my DD does and she has an epi pen because if she grabbed another kids drink and it was milk, and drank a fair bit it could kill her cause her tongue swells.
DD had the skin scrape test and it was negative for fish...her blood test came back and gave her a score of 1 for fish. My paediatrician (excellent!) told me that the skin test was more accurate and that when they have other allergy's the blood test can be inaccurate when it comes with a score of 1. He said we could test her for things that she eats now with no problems and they could come up with a score of 1. We are keeping her off fish JIC but I cans till have it (breastfeeding).
If you haven't had a skin scrape test I'd be asking for one. They usually do them together. I'm also off to see a paediatric dietician next month to ensure that DD is getting enough nutrients in her diet to keep her healthy. If she is just allergic to eggs then you probably wouldn't need that, but if she has other allergy's than ask about that too.
