View Full Version : Anyone in Kalamunda area?
We are thinking about moving to Kalamunda and I would be interested to talk to anyone with kids up that way. Is there anyone out there?
Jazoma
Hi Jazoma
Im not in the Kalamunda area but I am down the bottom of the hill in Midland.
Welcome to Perth and we hope you love it here.
Hi Mum2Bug,
I would be interested in hearing your views of life there. I have a lot of family around the Freo area (where we are staying at the moment), but their ideas of life in the hills are fairly one sided - mainly of the 'ooh it is a long way from the beach' variety. What is life like for you out there? Is there much sense of community?

Hi jazoma
I'm up the hill, but along a bit. I live in Parkerville. I grew up in Roleystone (along further from Kalamunda), so I obviously love the hills.
Happy to chat anytime about my love of the bush and hills living:D
Definitely a great community feeling - there's a lot of groups you can get into depending on your interests.
We also love the beach (and fishing - if you're my hubby - we have a little runabout) and we go to the beach quite frequently. I guess it depends on what you see as being a long time to get to the beach. Personally I find the 35min to Perth is fine and suits us well as we don't want to be right in the thick of it (so to speak).
We enjoy our space
Yes, that sounds alright to me, I don't need to be at the beach all the time, anyway. I guess my concern is meeting nice people, really. Someone did say to me that she thought it would be a place where commuters came home to, but didn't really get involved in the local community. That could be completely wrong, what are your thoughts? As a mum at home it is important for me to meet others in the same situation!

I grew up in Lesmurdie and Kalamunda and if you go and meet people, you always run into them at the shops schools etc, if you dont, you are pretty much left on your own.
The bus service is ****, and although I would never use it, my kids might want to one day and unless it dramaticaly improves, they wont be able to. The whole atmosphere is slower than some other suburbs which is nice. There is nothing up there really so you hve to travel to get anywhere (15-20 mins to Cannington/midland), to me it seems safer than some other suburbs I have lived in, there is an AWFUL lot of old people, and not many teenaged hoons (and those that are there, all hang around chicken treat cos there is nowhere else to go! haha, rebels)
There is a nice big park for the kids, and like I said its only 15-20 mins to get somewhere else nearby if needed.
Interesting info- thanks. I'll avoid the chicken treat, then! What about for the littler ones? Is there much going on for kids? My older 2 are 8 and 6 and interested in things like Guides and swimming lessons and drama, etc. And then of course I have a 2 year old, how is it for toddler groups and activities?
I love it out in this area. The beach is only 30 min or so drive away, the community feeling is great, there are a few sporting groups etc around. Maybe contact the local council or community hall re: activities for the kids. The local suburbs papers always have stuff for out this way too.
As for meeting up with other people, PlaygroupWA can help you with locations of local playgroups and we would love to have you come to our Bubhub meets!!! We are a very friendly bunch of people and meet up on a weekly basis.
Those are all good tips and I would love to come to one of your meets. How long have you been living there?

no, seriously the kids at chicken treat are fine, they are usually kids before they get theire license, so harmless really.
I lived there for 14 years, and my mum asnd in laws are still up there so I am therefore up there all the time, although I dont know anything about having kids up there as I never did.
As for the kids, do you know what school they will be going to? I dont know much about schools down the hill, but up the hill was seemingly very drug orientated in high school, I went to St Brigids and Lesmurdie and had friends at Mazanod and Kalamunda and all of them had their issues, Primary schools are a bit easier to guage.
hey there !! i am in forrestfield just a hop skip and a jump from kalamunda!!
feel free to msg me !

Been here nearly 2 years this time around. Used to live in Forrestfield around the corner from Jazzak.
Keep an eye on the Perth Tuesday meet threads and feel free to join in. If you express interest in joining us, we will pm you the details of each meet.
They are in primary school, any thoughts on those at all? I guess you get drugs at high schools everywhere, although do you think it is boring for teenagers living up there? What do they tend to get up to?
Will look at the meet threads then (if I can find them!) and keep an eye out for the next one. Yes I would definitely be interested in coming along.
