I know this is bit of gross topic  but I'm at a loss as to how to help my DD return to normal. She was sick last week with high fevers, vomiting, refusing solids etc. I had her checked out at the GP & they said to keep the fluids up etc. Now she's got a bad case of the runs & I have no idea on how to stop it.

I know that when they're constipated you give them pear juice or prunes, but what do you do when its the other way?

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Thats no good is it.
My son had the runs bout a month ago it lasted for bout a week. I rang the hospital and they said keep the fluids up and give him water. They said it was caused by his teeth.
If your daughter does more the 6 dirty nappies in a day then take her to a GP or hospital.

Hope she gets well soon!

Hope your DD is better soon. I have heard that mashed potato and gravy is supposed to be good for this. Also, you could try banana as this clogs my daughter up a bit.

Good luck

Janet.

Definately keep the fluids up, diahorrea causes dehydration- and in children it happens rapidly. There's nothing you should give her to try to stop it... her body is most likely trying to rid itself of a bug. Go back to your GP if it doesn't settle pretty soon.

My DS had a bad gastro about a month ago first with the vomiting and fever and then with the runs. He was put in hospital for a night with the vomiting because he got too dehydrated after 3 days without much fluids but after he was out of hospital the runs continued for another week. I was concerned so took him back to my GP and she advised just to keep the fluids up to him.
If you can try and get your DD to have some "gastrolyte" iceblocks you can get from the chemist, they will help with the dehydration.

Hi there, My ds had gastro not long ago and was hospitalised and the advice I had from the hospital was to feed things like boiled potatoes, white rice, white bread........low fibre foods to help stop the runs. If formula fed try to feed half strength bottles as formula reacts with bacteria in the stomach and makes the situation worse.

Watch for dehydration. It happens very quickly. Key signs are when the skin seems a bit loose, eyes sunken, dry tongue, stops crying tears. If any of these things happen you need to get to the GP or hospital asap to get DD rehydrated. My DS stopped taking fluid though which wasn't helpful  . If your DD is still drinking then thats a good sign.

Best of luck.

last time spencer had the runs - no vomiting or fever - i kept up the fluids and stuck to a bland diet - rice cereal, bananas, yoghurt and toast. seemed to help. if you're bfing, keep it up as the natural antibodies in the breastmilk helps. make sure you stock up on the nappies and wipes :)

so much for your advice girls. I've been keeping an eye on her & making sure that she gets more fluids than normal (water etc). She's seems to have slowed down today (ie not many dirty ones!) which is good!
