View Full Version : Is 3 a large family?

I now have three children, but have never considered that this might mean that we are now a "large" family (my father is one of 10 and I have always used that as my standard I suppose!).

Today I took the three of them to a shopping centre and after we finished shopping we stopped at the food court to have lunch as a treat. We shared a large table with a couple in their 60's and my two girls sat there eating their sandwiches and chattering away, behaving beautifully (I was very proud of them!) The lady was commenting on how well they were behaving and their healthy lunch (they had a bonus toy with their water and sandwich so were very excited) when her husband obviously realised that I had a baby with me - he asked "do you have another one in there?" and when I said "yes" he wrinkled his nose and grimaced in almost disgust! I responded by saying "Yes, I am very lucky" and he didn't say anything else - but it was written all over his face that I was obviously mad in some respect having three young children!

Is three children now a large family? Or was he just rude?

I think he WAS being rude, but i would consider 3 to be getting on the large side, but thats just me.

2 Kids to me these days is what i class as "the norm"
and thing more would be large, 10 kids in your dads instance would be MASSIVE in my opinion.

Just me tho

He was probably just trying to work out how someone so young looking could possibly have 3 kids ;)

But I do think he was very rude.

He was probably just being rude, but some people do consider 3 a large family. I would say any more upwards of 6 is a large family.

He was definatly just rude...or maybe he was jealous coz he didn't have 3 kids of his own...whatever the reason, you know if you only had 2 kids he would probably have asked if you were planning any more bubs

He was just plain rude :shame:. I also totally agree with cwsmum - if there was only the 2, he would have been asking if you were going to have anymore

it sounds rude to me also.
when people find out that i am a mother of 3, i get loads of looks, and some even ask why did we have 3.

alot ask me though, as i have 3 girls, when is the boy coming?

Good on you though, for what you said to him.

did you have your baby in a sling at all? i noticed that older people would get a bit upset with me carrying my baby in a sling sometimes, accusing me of squashing her up or asking how i fitted her in it or was she comfy.

maybe he was just swondering how you could have a baby'in there'
wondering in a rude way.

i guess 3 is a large family.
i don't think my 3 feel like a large family though, my oldest is 10 so it's maybe not as intense as 3 little ones. if you use exhaustion to measure family size i think 3 little ones would put you right up there.

i think in todays society where the trend seems to be to hve one or 2 that people see 3 as being on the large sid ebut we intend to have 4 god willing so not big to me!

My how times have changed.
My dad is one of 10 children and I definately consider that a large family.

I guess now we live in an age where they are more 1 and 2 children families than ever before, so many consider 3 or more to be a large family (even the govt in the last budget gave an extra $5 /week for large families, considered to be 3 kids or more).

Draught, I think the guy was a bit rude, OR perhaps you are in such great shape, that he couldn't possibly believe that you had just had another baby?;)

Every child is a blessing, enjoy!!

Wasn't 3 families the norm 10 years ago? what was it.. 2.6? (I used to get called .6 after those ads)

How rude. We're aiming for 2.. but I sometimes hope we'll go for the trifecta...

People are just rude. Next time tell them in the most eloquent way to... "Shove It."

I never thought having 3 was a large family until I had DD.Even some of our close friends ask us how we handle so many kids:confused: Yep, these were the same friends who asked us if we were having more after DS2 was born.

I think 3's just perfect!

I think in this day and age 2 kids is the "norm" and 3 kids is getting large. But PERSONALLY, I think 4+ kids is a large family. You don't hear of too many people having more than 4 kids now days.

I'm having #4 and it's what we've always wanted - we got our fair share of comments from family and friends about it, although no-one was terribly surprised!

Thanks for all the responses - nice to know that I am not insane (well - not REALLY insane anyway!!)

I should have explained that I actually had DS in the pram rather than in his sling.

And thanks for all the lovely compliments people snuck in!
