Hi,

I'm just wondering about reflux and if you think my baby might have it.
All my babies have been quite spewy up till about 6 months. They've never cried over it like it was hurting them, and have always been great burpers.

My ds is 15 weeks and I feel he's getting a little worse than what my other 3 were. He was fine b/f and even at 8 weeks when I started to comp feed him (the same formula I've used with my other's). At 10 weeks he was pretty much f/f and he started out with a few weeks of just normal little spews after a burp, but now he's bringing up about 30-40 mls at times and then he cries.. I try to bring up more wind but then it's the bottle he wants..only to do it all over again  He's putting on weight, and everything else is going fine, so I'm not sure if I should change his formula or not? Does this sound like reflux?

I managed to get in and see my CHN today and she helped me with my question :)

Hi,
Sorry I didn’t get a chance to get back to you before now, but it’s good that you wre able to receive some help from the CHN so quickly. Did she feel it was reflux?

I hope that whatever advice you got, you find it helpful. Just to answer your question it certainly can fit in with the signs and symptoms of reflux, especially at that age, which can often be the worst time. This is presumed to be because they are becoming more active, but still having liquid feeds, which means it can slosh around and be refluxed. Also, the hot weather can flare reflux, which can account for him getting that bit worse. Other things that can also flare it are vaccinations, teething, overtiredness, change in routine, illness and that kind of thing.

Reflux babies often put on weight just fine as well, but can still be uncomfortable, as your son appears to be. If she did suspect reflux, then changing formula is not necessarily the solution, though it may help. Are you using thickened formula (can be given from a spoon before or after a feed? What strategies did she suggest?

I hope he feels better soon,

Glenda

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me :)
The CHN did say yes, she thinks he has just a mild case of reflux. She said that he's probably worse at the moment is becasue of the heat /humidity we are having here.
I'm not going to change formula, she told me to keep him propped up which I have already been doing, and hopefully by 6 months, he'll have outgrown it like my others did :). But...if anything changes, he gets worse and I think he's getting pain ect...I'll take him to see our GP.
I also went to RISA website and had a good read up which I found very helpful too :)

Thanks again,
Annette
