View Full Version : Freckles
Are any babies born with freckles? Dh and I both are freckly, but ds doesn't have any.........yet.
hey cathy, i dont think babies can actually be born with freckles cause they are caused by the sun, i think sometimes birthmarks can look like freckles though. i have noticed that cooper has got one or two now on his neck and arms, its funny to think that his clear white skin could end up as freckly as mine!! i have heaps of freckles on my arms and chest, on my face to but they are not heaps dark there, so not as noticable. thomas is 9 though and not nearly as many freckles as me. i wonder if it has something to do with us keeping our kids out of the sun more than we were?

No, I'm pretty sure that babies aren't born with freckles, mine weren't anyway.
Freckles appear as a result of exposure to the sun.
I'm absolutely covered with them so have been meticulous with the sunscreen on my 2 x DD's.
Eldest DD has olive skin and doesn't freckle, but DD8 has a few on her nose. She would have the tendency to be covered in them if we don't watch it.
hey :)
I'm sure that I heard somewhere that if kids develop freckles before a particular age (e.g. 6mths... I honestly cant remember the exact 'cut off' age)- they aren't real freckles and can actually be an indicator of a symdrome???
geez I hate it when I can kinda remember reading an article  ... I think it was Readers Digest....
freckles are definately from sun exposure - and kids are getting less and less as parents get more protective about time outside (with DH being a red-head... I plan on dipping our children in a vat of cream each day- some sort of sheep dip system!! :D )
having said that... kids need Vitamin D too - so they DO need to spend healthy time outside!!!! yet another thing that parents have to 'balance'!!!!

Hi Wattle,
I saw a skin specialist recently for a yearly checkup and asked him the same question as DS has a freckle behind his left knee.
They aren't actually born with freckles however a spot that occures soon after birth is usually considered to be a birthmark. All future spots can be caused by either sun exposure OR hereditary. I have spotty skin and the Dr advised that even if I kept DS out of the sun completely, he may still get spots ( I certainly have a couple of freckles on spots that have never seen the light of day ;) )
Bubs may still get spots many years later if it is in his genetic makeup although sensible sun avoidance will help keep these to a minimum.

Me too Rynosmum,
I have a freckle right 'there', lol. I have no idea how it got there, must be one of those that occurs straight after birth (birthmark).
I just had a yearly checkup and there was no way I was going to say,
oh, could you check this out for me please, not enough money in the world to make me do that!!!!!

Interesting question!, I have wondered myself as both DH and I have freckles, but so far neither of the kids do?
I am very meticulous about sunscreen and hats being on before the kids go outside. If someone else is minding them DS1 will remind them that hats and cream need to be on if they go outside!! - too cute
Both of my kids have little brown birthmarks ... Bella on her shoulder and Daniel on his belly.
They both have a few freckles on their faces ... neither of them had them at birth and I have noticed them developing since we moved to Australia a couple of years ago. They look really cute!
They are getting them in the same pattern as one of their cousins. Both my sister and I have been strict about hats etc for our kids, but have always encouraged them to play outside, all year round, even in rainy weather (barring storms etc and dressed appropriately).
I have a lot of freckles on my arms, a few very faint ones on my face and one situated on the side of one of my toes! Now, the sun has definitely never been there - lol!
The one thing that I hope my kids don't inherit is my moles! I have three moles on my lower back, the raised and floppy kind - not dangerous, just annoying that are in the exact spot that my mother, grandmother and great greandmother had them! There may have been further generations back with them, but seeing as I am the only family member left alive who has them, I guess I will never know!
