Hi Tracey,
We went out to Macclesfield today to the trout farm. It was really good and the children loved it-most important! It was cheap to go-$5/adult and $2.50/child over five and then you pay for what you catch. They have BBQ's and the kiosk sells all the trimmings for your fish if you want to BBQ it there (lemon, butter, herbs etc...) plus they sell wine and beer.
Be warned about the trout pools though, it only takes about 15 seconds to nab a fish and you can't put them back so you need to balance time fishing in the lake with fishing in the actual pools or it could become expensive! They supplied all the rods, bait etc... too so you don't need any equipment.
Great day out.

Philip island (though I haven't been there for years)
Portsea/Sorrento beach
Rosebud
also theres a farm near where I live (haven't been there yet) but I heard its really good by a few ppl, its called Myuna farm its in Doveton (off Kidds road) its only $5 per person OR $15 for a family (family can be 4 ppl or 10 ppl).
Also, The Plaster Fun House in Caulfield is pretty good, I went there all the time as a kid (great for rainy days).
Queenscliff is beautiful and a very important historic town. It also has a really good pizza shop in the main street LOL. Take a walk down the pier, it's a relaxing day out.

You could drive to Sorrento, and catch the ferry to Queenscliff, or vice-verse... that's fun.
What about the Fairy Park in Anakie? That's pretty good for kids too...

Barwon Heads - we love it there!
My Uncle & Aunty (the one you met from the dinner) own a house just across the road from the beach and we often go there for a weekend.
It's such a gorgeous little place with a beautiful beach which is really safe for littlies.
The pub's great for meals too!
