Hi Girls,

I was just wondering if there is anything that you do that you were told NOT to do? This will probably horrify everyone but, my son refuses to sleep with covers & my mum suggested laying him in between 2 pillows in his cot  eventhough I am well aware of the dangers of suffocation I still do it & have not had any problems. My son actually picks up the pillows & throws them off him sometimes so i really don't feel suffocation is an issue. I am sure i will get some responses telling me how stupid i am. R there any other mums out there that do anything they were told not too?!

Naughty me

I'm a naughty mum too because i put MJ to sleep either on her tummy or her side. Its the only way she'll sleep :o

I put my babies at the top of the cot - they ended up there anyway!

I put my babies to sleep on their tummies - they slept better!

I closed the door to my babies room - they slept better!

I kept my babies cool rather than hot - I knew if they were overheating

I gave my babies solids at 4 months and 3 months - they were ready

I turned their carseats around early - they were both too tall for rear facing

Shall I go on!!!! To me, guidelines are just that GUIDELINES! Every parent and child is different and you need not feel guilty if you do something that makes you and your baby more comfortable, unless of course, you are putting them through the washing machine on spin cycle then pegging them on the washing line to dry!

I'm having that issue now. MJ's feet hit the seat but she only weigh's 6.3kg. She's 5.5months old. Its not fair that most other bubs get a view :( Its not her fault she's a lightweight :p

Both of my kids are now too tall for their carseats and I have put them into boosters. By the recommendations, only Bella should be allowed out of her carseat yet and she is only over 14kg by 100gms! Daniel is still 13.5kg, but the carseat is no longer keeping him as safe as he is on a booster.

Did you know that after 12months of age, it is only recommended that your child be in a child restraint? Aparently, and this was confirmed by my friend in the police, you can just put them in a seatblet after this age and as long as they are sitting and not jumping around you cannot be fined!

I put his car seat around a bit later than i should of. They recommend turning the seat around at 9kg. Well he wasnt 9kg yet so i just let him in the rearward postition. The thing was he was ready to turn around cause his feet was hanging up the back of the seat and he kept trying to see us by turning his head around. I dont think it really matters when you turn them around as long as they can sit up and have head control there shouldnt be any problems. Most times your child will tell you when its time! :D

Hi Girls,
my son refuses to sleep with covers & my mum suggested laying him in between 2 pillows in his cot

I do that too.....Oli refuses to sleep on his back, he kicks the sheets off and has started rolling around
Needless to say I have skirted around this when at my early childhood centre.

My little girl is 2 1/2 and still refuses to sleep with covers on her. So I just put her to bed in pjs that suit the temperature at the time.

We live in the tropics so its not such a big deal but in our winter it gets down to 8 degrees which is pretty dam cold for us. lol.

So I have her in fleece pjs with a one piece suit underneath to keep her warm. In the summer she wears cotton short pjs and when its inbetween with warm nights and cool mornings I put a long sleeved jumper on her with short pjs bottoms.

When we went to England last year I had to do the same thing, she is very rarely sick (touch wood).

For peace of mind that your child is ok just put extra clothes on or off, then you can sleep and not worry about whether they are hot or cold or suffocating or what other people think.

If you think about it we only sleep with sheets and blankets because we have been conditioned to do it, our children don't realise that yet.

Hope this helps

My DS sleep on a pillow... Its a breastfeeding pillow (so he doesn't move around).. the reason is he has reflux and I needed to have him elevated and just propping up one end of the cot wasn't working...

my Jade used to sleep better on her side also, so that's what she did for the first eight weeks.. whatever works.

Just don't tell the MACH nurses--- it's not lying- it is omitting the truth!!!!

My DD sleeps on her tummy some times(ok most of her day sleeps)!!!

I had a friend who's DS would only go to sleep if his face was covered  --- she used to sit at the base of his cot wait for him to nod off and then pull the sheet down- and boy didn't she cop it from everyone  ! But he is a happy healthy 6 year old and still sleeps with his sheet over his face- go figure  !!!

I put my daughter to sleep on her tummy from 6 weeks of age because she actually slept that way

I turned her carseat around at 5 1/2 months because she was large enough

I gave her solids at 3 1/2 months because she wanted them.

There is more but I'm not about to go on.

Nice to see im not the only one omitting things from my clinic nurses !
You think i would have learned after the first telling off about how i let the pediatrician advise me to put rice cereal in his bottle to which i did at 8wks the clinic nurse was enraged & asked which doctor to which she then said "Oh yes he is known to be telling new mums the wrong thing" i was like what the hell ?!?!?!? He was actually very helpful & informative more so than she ever was. So as i had a very settled baby by then i didnt care so when he started wanting more i started feeding him the rice cereal around the 12wks mark. Anyways as i had seen a different nurse another time she was helpful about solids with him being well on his way by 4mths. I then copped another hiding about letting slip that bubs always slept on his side since birth ! I used the safe & sound sleeper my sister used for my nephew & it was a god send as it meant he couldnt roll ( i make sure i never see her anymore heh the others are great ! ). I also got weird looks from another nurse who came to speak at our mothers group one time. Cause she had started talking about not having any toys in the cot or mobiles that everything should be plain so bubs can learn to sleep. I spoke up saying well i want my bubs to learn to sleep in any situation so i dont care what you say & i have a mobile on his cot cause it means when he wakes up he quite happily plays with his toys ( yes thats right i have a miniature winne the pooh bear & piglet in his cot ! ) & talks to his mobile. Otherwise it means i have a very unhappy baby who hears me get up & he will scream the house down if i dont get him up straight away he has done this since 4mths or so when he realised he could wiggle around his cot. My bubs will sleep even if i vacuum his room infact me doing that or even blow drying my hair at nite will send him off to sleep ! So bugger the whole oh every thing must be quiet to help bubs sleep i mean seriously how will these kids cope later when they have a little brother or sister ?
My bubs also liked having his face covered i even got a lecture from a guy who came to quote on replacing new windows about how i need to be more responsible about keeping his face free of the covers & he proceeded to pull them down ( bubs always slept in his rocker downstairs when he was little but dont you love those wonderful people who feel the need to tell you what you should & shouldnt be doing ?!?!?! ) i laughed at him & said he likes it that way ! To which he was going to start again but i managed to point out that as we talked bubs had already pulled them back up of his own accord ( he was 3wks old ) he immediately shut up !
I could go on & on with what i do wrong but i have a happy healthy baby & thats all that matters to me !!!!
