From what I have been told a MAid of Honor is a married woman, but the equivalent of this is A head Bridesmaid or chief bridesmaid they play the same roles but have different names.

i thought a maid of honour was your main/head bridesmaid which is not married, if you're married they're a matron of honour.
maid for un-married
matron for married
same duties and roles though

My maid of honor/chief bridesmaid was my best friend. She organised my hens night, made sure on the day my dress was being held as I walked and was not getting ruined, held the bouquet for me during the ceremony.
Basically they are there to keep things in charge for you

Matron of honour is the married chief bridesmaid, maid of honour for unmarried.
My maid of honour organised hte hens party, was my go to girl for all the planning, spent the wedding morning with me relaxing, held my bag and flowers in the ceremony and signed the wedding cert. she was also going to say a speech but lost her voice (how convenient, she was so nervous she said i wish i would loose my voice the night before!!!!!!!!!)

This is what my maid of honour will be doing too. Oh and she's not married either.
Your Maid of Honour (or Matron of Honour if she is a married woman) is your chief bridesmaid. She holds your flowers and signs the register as a witness.
Maid of Honour and Matron of Honour and Chief Bridesmaid are all the same thing. You can choose whoever you want.

My bestie was my Maid of Honour and she is not married. If she was married she is called the Matron of Honour.
Her role in the day is to sign as a witness to your marriage!
