Margaret River is stunning!!! It is such a beautiful spot - wonderful native bush, great beaches, stunning coastline, and the wineries. Oh the wineries!!!!!!!!!!!

It used to be all devonshire teas and dodgy craft shops, but now there are gourmet restaurants, funky galleries and a cheese factory, chocolate factory and olive oil factory.

It is Oh-so-trendy though, so I suspect property prices are pretty high. It's 3 hours from Perth, so a popular retreat for city types for a weekend.

I don't live there (I'm one of the city types), but I love it.

It is absolutely beautiful ... we are about 1 hours drive away (which is close compared to some!).

It is very touristy (people wise) but still small & tranquil IYKWIM?

Bron's made the perfect summary

I'm not sure on rental prices etc, but the property market has gone thru the roof here (South West) ...

You've probably done your research, but this gives you a good idea regarding "things" "CLICK" (http://www.margaretriver.com/) :D

every one seems to tell me how great it is....dh works in the wine industry...he was told he'd get a jod no problems....but the pay isnt as good as here...i think thats cause they crush more grapes over here....it looks great..house's are around $250...for a 4 bedroom...they look nice though.....im a little uncertain...its such a big move from here..this is my home town...but thats the problem...i want to go somewhere completely new to us:D

were going to save a few grand....then wait till vintage ends here...im fairly sure we'll go...it looks too good not to:D

Great, BJ! There is so much to do in the one area ... we haven't even seen half of it ourselves, and we've been in the South West all our lives .

$250 is a good price for rentals too ... considering all other costs (we built 5 1/2 years ago and the value of our home has tripled in that time!)

Yes - the beaches really do look that great - great fishing, swimming and surfing.

Sorry I can't help you with the prices thing, but Margaret River is also a great base for a lot of other places - maybe Bubble Crazy can help you out there. Busselton is my guess, but it's about 46km away - largest closest town. Not sure, but I think it shouldn't be more than a half hour drive - it is country driving.

Sorry BJ but you wont find a house that cheap anywhere over here anymore. The prices have skyrocketed in the past 18 months and anything under $250 a week is now considered to be a major bargain.

Having said that, if i had the money i would happily move down that way!!!

yeah we have really cheap rent...we moved in before prices went up...a house round here now starts at $180....up to $400 a week:eek: ...who can afford $400 a week on rent:confused:

the houses looked nice...im willing to pay up to $300 max....but would prefer to pay less:D

It's probably about that .. I'm hopeless with travel times and stuff like that LOL. Busselton, I'd say would be more expensive again as it's getting to be a larger town now, not so reliant on Bunbury (another 50 odd kms away).

There are little surrounding towns like Cowaramup, Gracetown, Dunsborough, Yallingup very close where you may be able to score cheaper (or WAY more expensive!) properties too.

Thought I'd put a plug in for my home town. I'm in Mt Barker which has a huge wine industry much cheaper rent than Margaret River and City of Albany 25 minutes drive away - and the beaches that go with it. 3 & 1/2 hrs from Perth and a good primary school not to mention the 3rd top public high school in WA. Love Margs but tooooo busy in tourist season. The quieter life for me & my family with the city close by!!;)

Hi BJ,

I second Bubble*Crazy, some of the smaller towns can get you the cheaper rent and what's a 25 minute drive? That's like city living in Melbourne!

I grew up in Albany and although I love it, my fave is Dunsborough. We got married there and everyone that came to the wedding still says it is the best place. They are harassing us for a second wedding so they can go back!

There's a lot of development all down that way though. Could work in your favour... Or maybe you just need to find a nice old lady to rent from?
