How long was your premmie in NICU for?

Hi,

I am now 29 weeks and still having good contractions every night. Today they are staying with me all day. I have had steriods and stopped the nifedipine tablets.

I got an U/S today which showed bubby at 30 weeks.

I am just wondering how long the stay in NICU was, and at what gestation bub was born. I live a good way from an NICU hospital and am wondering how long we would have to relocate for. Also is there any chance of staying in the hospital with your baby???

Hi my bub was born at 26 weeks at Royal Women's Randwick. They always say to use your due date as a guide of how long the baby will be in for. Mine got out 1 week after due date but she had alot of breathing problems. I wasn't allowed to stay in hospital with the baby longer than 1 week however if you are far away there is sometimes hostel type accomodation available you just need to check with the hospital. There are usually social workers at the hospital who can assist with this.

Hi there, My dd was born at 32 weeks we were dischared after 2 weeks but usually the say use your due date as the discharge date, my bub come home earlier than usual because i am a nurse and could look after her at home (or so i thought) inwhich i stayed in the nicu overnight to prove this.
Really it all comes down to how well your baby is born how well your baby feeds breathes etc etc.
every baby is different, as there was a 26 weeker born breathing on her own :eek: and not needing future assistance that was very rare!.

As has already been said they do say to use the due date as the guideline for homecoming. DS was born at 31 weeks, he spent one night in NICU and then almost 6 weeks in SCN.

DD was only 5 weeks prem and a healthy 5lb 12 ounces and although she dropped down under 5lbs she still got to come home 4 days later which is standard for a csect :)

Our Dynamic Duo were born at 31w5d. We brought them home after 27 days.

Generally if they have no complications they will normally discharge once you've reached 2kgs.

There is also the facility to transfer back to a hospital closer to home once they don't need high level specialist treatment.

I really appreciate all the replies I have received!!

We have made it to 31 weeks. Still have bunches of contractions but they do die down. If I make it to 34 weeks and bub has no problems I can stay in my hown town hospital.

I really don't like the idea of leaving bub in NICU while I go elsewhere to sleep. Not to mention flying for the first time...

My son was born at 27 & 6 at the royal brisbane. i was in 3 wks before hand cause my waters broke. blair was in hospital for the full 3 mth. i lived 30min away and made the trip every day. i know that there was a mc donald house there and some of the ladies were able to stay there if they lived 2 far away.
:fingerscrossed: you will be fine and able to have it at you local hospital. every day counts they say.

My DD was born at 29 weeks and spent 7 weeks in NICU. She had the best care in the world. I would go home every day and not worry about who was looking after her as I knew all the nurses there were so caring.

My DD is now 27 months old and is up with all her milestones and is a very smart little girl.

My 3yr old was born @ 31wks @ the Mater Mothers Brisbane hes now a healthy almost 3 yr old (in May) Last yr in August i had DS#2 he was a full termer boy was a scared tilli got past the 31 wks mark then i just prayed till we got to hold him in our arm. Samuel (my prem) was in hospital for 5wks and 1 day his birth weight was 2050gms, i was jsut glad to take him home but i was a bit lost for the 1st couple of days as i wasnt use to not having to travel to the hospital everyday as that took up all my days.

Aimee was born at 26 weeks.

She spent 17 weeks in NICU, and 8 weeks in SCN.

He spent 5 days in Level 2 NICU and 3 days in Level 3 SCN, then roomed in with me for 2 days until we went home together.

Hi my lil boy was born at 27.5 weeks at Mater Mothers was in ICN for 9weeks then went to Logan for 6weeks in SCN... He just turned 2 in Feb and doin well.. Came off his oxygen round time of his birthday to...GOOD LUCK and just take it easy.....
