I honestly don'y think it matters but don't get 2 even if they are the same sex because if you get 2 females thinkking they wont breed they will because one will turn into a male and the same goes if you get 2 males one will turn into a female

Boy or girl is fine but I would also recommend just the one.
We bought a second female as a friend for our first and she must have been in the early stages of pregnancy and we obviously did not know until she started to waddle. They breed so quickly and even though we seperated the boys and girls (when we finally figured out how to tell the difference) both girls were pregnant (yes one was by her son eww). All the boys were passed onto the local pet shop.
I did find the boys did get a little nasty with each other but if you only had one they should be fine.
My Guinea Pigs were very sweet.

Piggies definitely do not change sex. But pet shop attendants are well known for getting the sex of the pigs wrong.
It is best to get 2 or more of the same sex (unless you want hundreds of the little beasts running round:p ) It's not good just to get one as it will get lonely.
Unless you get young pigs that have been handled a lot you will find that they take a long time to get tame.
They are not as loving as a cat or a dog
But....
They are awfully cute, make sweet little noises and you can watch them run round the grass for ages doing their funny little piggy things.
I think they are great pets.
The only problem I have with them is not buying more!
I have two males, however with my over excited little boy and a couple of cats that constantly come around our yard, they have never settled down. They are lovely animals - I think they just need a calm environment something we don't have in this mad house!!!
