View Full Version : Why didn't anyone tell me this!
:mad:Last week Sebastian my then 6 week old was constantly hungry he fed every 1 1/2 hours i felt i was going crazy then i did some research on the net and had found that this was normal, that at 6 weeks and then at 12 weeks the babies are uping your supply for their needs so that is why that at these stages they are constantly feeding.
With my first i thought at about 12 weeks my supply was running low because he was doing the same thing, so i gave him formula, ( in the end i had tooo as i went back to work)
With my second at 6weeks he did the same thing again i thought well my supply must be low better top him up with formula. Then i gave into formula by week 10.
If i had of known that this is a normal pattern for babies and that it is not an issue with your milk supply then i would of not given up so easily!!!
Why isn't this told to mothers in hospital?
I am not given up so easily this time!!!!!!!!!
I have proof that i have enough milk he is putting on 1 kilo every 10 days:eek:

Exactly
At least you know now what is normal so you can continue breastfeeding this one without worrying!
It must come down to the midwifes and hospital...at the hospital i was at i had to watch videos that explained all that and i had visits from all sorts of specialists including chircopraters to help with getting my body back into shape...i also had midwifes from the hospital come to my home to assist with the breastfeeding, answer questions, assist with support it was wonderful...
..not good on your behalf to not be told:no: ....poor thing:hugs:

There are alot of things that you arn't told about. There needs to be more info sessions or hand outs given after the birth they focus so much info on the actual birth.
My first i was public and i had no assistance at all!!
With 2nd and 3rd I went private and we had a lactation consultant always on staff and they were Fantastic!!!
I would assume that your maternal child nurse should mention this.
i agree with you mum2bailey!!!!
This info should accompany you in your blue book, especially when they are trying encourage breastfeeding why would they leave out such vital information, if you notice most mums give up breastfeeding by 3 months and it wouldn't surprise me if most of it could of been avoided if this info was made clear to all mums.
I agree there needs to be more education about what happens after you leave the hospy. I too had no idea what was going on when ds kept feeding every hour for a couple of days, I was just about ready to give in when dearest mummy (ahh mums what would we do without them?) told me what was going on.
I told my ob at my six week visit that the hospy should have spent the 6week prenatal course on more important things than preping for the birth the whole time. We paid $370 and were never even shown how to change a nappy let alone anything useful like "babies have a growth spurt at 6weeks and 12 weeks, or there abouts". Note we went to a very expensive private hospital and I couldn't recommend more to steer clear of it, the parent company make a form of brekky cereal enjoyed by cricketers (it's in Sydney).
The response from my ob was "it isn't their responsibility, they only have to worry about letting you know about things that happen in the hospital". Well, how about having to ask someone to show me how to bath my 3 day old son, or being covered in an explosive poop and buzzing the midwives for 2hrs to get some help because I didn't know how to change a nappy and they didn't allow sposies and then being abused because I put ds on the bed cause his crib was a little dirty, because they would have had to change my bed sheets if he wet himself ... ok sorry a little off topic, vent over, but my point is, pre natal classes need to cover more post natal topics so we can all feel a little more confident in our new careers!!!
No professionals told me but I read a few books and they all said that babies do tend to go through a few feeding frenzy days here and there every few weeks.
Also, when such things happened, I would whinge and whine and generally carry on about it in the August thread and would find everyone else in there was going through/had just gone through the same thing. The birth group thingies are real sanity savers - make sure you use yours!
