View Full Version : Carpal Tunnel
Hi,
I am suffering really badly from Carpal Tunnel in my hands and fingers & can hardly even grip or hold on to things. I just wondered after I have given birth, how long does it take to go away again? Weeks or days? I know everyone is different but I am just worried I wont even be able to hold on to my little baby properly with such sore hands.

Mine disappeared the moment K appeared. Was very strange.
That a worry. I have developed what I think is carpal tunnel but I don't get numbness or pins and needles in my fingers but I'm scared to drop DS but it seems once the weight of the baby is in your hands it's easier to cope with.
Having said that I'm sure that James thinks his name equates to a heaving noise as that is the noise I make every time I pick that little porker up!

I had CT previous to pregnancy, so it flared up a fair but during it. I also found when I hold DD for too long, with my wrist bent, it plays up.
My sis never had it before, but got it during pregnancy and has still got it.
They say it's not hereditary, but our mum's had both wrists operated on.
I think it justs depends on the person. Sometimes strapping you wrist helps, cause it prevents you bending it, which is what causes the pain.
That's interesting, my mum has had CP ever since I can remember but I have never suffered until I reached around 36 weeks of this pregnancy. I guess I can only hope it clears up again after I give birth and I am not going to be like my mum, she has also had to have her wrists operated on. Guess I will just put up with it, my wedding ring is stuck now too, my hands got so swollen and now I dont want to have it cut off!
Thanks for your replies ladies dont know what I would do without you all & your advice!
HAPPY NEW YEAR

You probably don't want to hear this but when I was going to my standard check ups the midwife/dr became used to my complaint about my hands. They told me it would go away once bubs was born however it got worse.
Turns out I ended up with Bilateral DeQuervain's Syndrome (affects your thumbs) in both hands. Had to use 2 hands to pick up the kettle... pain holding my daughter... nasty nasty. You don't know how much you use your hands/thumbs until they hurt every time!!!
I ended up having cortisone injections in September which made life bearable but if I overdo things straight back to painville. My thumbs are always stiff and "crack" a fair bit. Prior to the injections I had both hands in splints (imagine picking up a newborn with your hands in splints!).
Having said that I think it's not common to have it remain after birth.
I had CT with 2 of my pregnancies and it went away straight after they were born. There was still some numbness at the tips of my fingers for a week or so, but no pain.

I had CPS from about 34 weeks if I remember right, I often woke with no feeling whatsoever in both of my arms from the elbow down, it was often very painful and I refused to believe that it would go away so quickly after DD's birth - BUT, literally as soon as she was born, it stopped. Amazing huh.
But also, like SweetDreams, I now have DeQuervains in both sides, mine started a couple of days after DD was born. I have been on a physio waiting list since September, I've now just learned some simple exercises to relieve it, but it too is very painful at times.
For your CPS - try keeping your hands elevated as much as possible, and though very difficult in the last trimester, try not to sleep on your arm (i know, with such limited sleeping positions as it is this can be damn-near impossible! I also used ice-gel on mine when they got really painful, which did help.
Hope you get some relief soon.
Hi
I had CT for 5 months of my pregnancy and although the pain went away after I had my baby the tingling in the fingers went on for at least 3 months after he was born but I have nothing now 6months on.

Strange how pregnancy can trigger some of these conditions & then you are stuck with it, hopefully mine will clear up again, am not at all familiar with DeQuervains but is sure does sound sore! Thanks for the tips and advice.
