We're moving to Melbourne next year & I'm trying to find out about what we can do cloth wise. We use a service in California which supplies us with 'chinese prefolds'. I love it but am willing to try the whole wash 'em myself route if necessary. I just want to decide now so I can buy what I need before i leave....

Has anyone here used 'Nappie Wash' service in Melbourne? If so, comments please... re reliability, standard of nappy, shape of nappy, do you get your accessories through them or elsewhere etc

What is the 'usual' nappy to use in Australia? Is it the great square mum used for me back in the 60s or do you use prefolds there too?

My only contacts in Australia eiher have no kids or used disposables & think I really new-age for gogin with cloth - LOL!

There are a few nappy wash services around, if you look at:
http://www.bubhub.com.au/servicesnappylaundryvic.shtml
You can find details. We used the NappyWash.com.au service for 6 weeks with DS, and were really happy with it. They only provided terry or flannellette squares, but they were always soft, clean and efficient. The nappies aren't super thick, nor super thirsty, but OK for day time use. I don't know of anywhere in Australia where you can get prefolds as part of a nappywash service. The nappywash service sells snappis (nappy nippas in the US I think) and covers, but you can get better ones downunder.

You might be able to get more information at
www.ozclothnappies.org or www.nappycino.com

They are both Australian sites.

Most of the people in the online cloth community use fitted cloth nappies, and if you join up with one of the dedicated cloth nappy groups (see above links), I am sure you would be MORE than welcome to come along to our nappycinos (get togethers) to see our stashes so you can research some of the other great nappies available in Australia designed and made by Aussie mums! You can get prefolds here, hemp and cotton, as well as hemp, cotton, bamboo, fitted nappies, pocket nappies made with PUL and fleece, and covers made with PUL, fleece and wool. LOTS of local options! If you were to buy your nappies in the US before coming, you would take up a lot of luggage space. If you buy a set for while you are here (don't know if your trip is temporary or not) the resale value on good quality fitted nappies on ebay is pretty impressive, so you wouldn't lose out much at all.
There are links to some of them here:
http://www.bubhub.com.au/shopsnappyproducts.shtml
and also at the links above. You will get lots of tips and advice, and reviews from nappycino.com

If you have any more questions about Victoria/Melbourne, please feel free to pm me! Hope you have fun planning your big trip, I'm sure you will love it here!

The Nappy services supply either flannelette or terry toweling squares which you need to fold yourself.

We're coming in January for at least 2 years, for DH's work, & luckily our removals will be covered so I'd planned to just add the nappies to that & get them shipped with our other stuff. I hope DD will be done w/ nappies by the time we leave but there may be a # 2 and/or 3 at some stage... :)

At present we use pre-folds w/ super whisper wrap covers during the day & fuzzi bunz at night. Not sure if I can deal with the whole origami folding the squares require... DD has become a roller at changing time.... looks like I'll be doing my own laundry

Thanks for your ideas & info - really appreciate it.

Mor - thanks for the invite to contact you about the general stuff you may well hear from me - we're sure to have a ton of questions!

If you do a cloth nappy search here on bubhub there have been many threads recently about cloth nappies and how you can buy ones that don't even need folding and take very little washing time as well.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy living down under!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just spent the last hour or so checking out a few sites, following link upon link. I love the fabrics available. I think I am beginning to justify my wish for a sewing machine when we get to Oz!

I hope you enjoy living down under!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure we'll love living down under again - we're from NZ, but we've been away since '98 :)

PM is private Messaging. It's located just above the forum page where you are welcomed. You can use it to send private messages to people instead of posting them on the forum.
Or you could right click on the persons name you want to pm and then drag down to "send a private message".
Hope this makes sense.
