View Full Version : Expecting in perth
I have just discovered i am 5.5 weeks pregnant with our first child :D i was just wondering if there were any others expecting in perth at the moment? If so when are you due? Where are you planning to have the birth?
Hi Tulip,
Congratulations on your pregnancy :D My baby is due 14th Feb, I'm having the baby at Attadale Private (this is mainly because of my health insurance policy).

Thanks for all the replies :D
I am finding this a really supportive and informative site, and also a good place to chat with others in similar positions because we're the only ones out of our friendship circle actually settled down and starting a family!
Monyfelix: DH had actually joked that i should have a casaerean on the 17th so that it could be an anniversary present!! thats men for you! :o
Also just wondering for those of you who have already had babies, where did you have them and how did you find the venue? I am planning on going public and thinking of King Edward birthing centre as ive heard good things about it.
Hi Tulip!
Firstly CONGRATULATIONS! :D I had my 3 girls at murdoch hospital under Chris Gunnell (he is a fantastic ob/gyn). I had a girlfriend deliver at KEMH in Oct & she said they were fantatic (she should know as she is training to be a midwife herself!) I have been there about 3 years ago when i had spotting with my first baby & the midwife i had was so caring - she was also the one who recommended Chris - sorry i'll stop waffeling now :D Good Luck

Hi Tulip,
I am due 14th feb 2006 and I am going to Bentley public hospital... I have been there and spoken with the midwives and nurses and they seem so nice... yeah the hospital is old but the good thing about it is it isnt that busy so you get a bit more one on one care... and they are great they let you ring up 24 hours a day to talk to the widwife for advice.. I am going with Dr O'donovan (OB) everyone I have spoken to about him say he is very good..

You got married a few days after I had my DD! She's 5 months old now.
I had her as well as my other two girls at Armadale Hospital. It's really lovely there now and the staff are fantasic, I was a public patient also.
I have hear KEMH Birthing Centre is really good too...

Hi everyone... I am new on this site, but had my daughter at King Edward- but in the hospital part, and found it to be the worst experience of my life. We dont have health insurance so public is our only way to go, so this time (am 30 weeks atm) we are booked at the birthing centre and the mid wives there are lovely. The only prob I have is that if something goes a little awry, I will end up back in the hospital and in the same position as last time, so am actually looking at Bentley, so anyone with anymore info about Bentley hospital, it would be appreciated.
All I can say, is that regardless of where you go, dont let anybody make you feel bad, cos it will be one of the most memorable days of your life!!
Sorry to ramble :)

Hi there,
i am new to bub hub, I am currently 18 weeks and also looked into KEDH birth centre, but was put off by the fact that they discharge you after one day, as this is my first it seems a bit scary to go home so soon. So we will probably go into osbourne park hosp, has anyone had a good experiance there?
Good luck with your pregnancy

I looked Osborne Park Hospital on the net, and was really impressed by the following
Baby Tagging
Osborne Park Hospital is the first hospital in Australia to introduce "Electronic Baby Tagging". Babies have an electronic tag placed around their ankle when they are admitted to the ward area. The tag is then activated through a computer system that enables the staff to track an individual baby's whereabouts within the ward. If a baby is taken near an exit the system will alarm and alert all staff to the potential of a baby being taken off the ward. At the time of discharge, the tag is deactivated in the computer and the tag is then removed. If an attempt is made to remove the tag prior to deactivation, then the system will alarm.
The only benefit of being in the birthing centre (in my opinion) is that your partner can stay with you in the hospital, and it is a far more relaxed atmosphere.
As for the birthing centre letting you go home after 24 hours, they do come and visit you at home for a week or so afterwards, so it is ok.
When my daughter was born in King Edward Hospital, I stayed in for 5 days and found that I wanted to go home almost immediately. The midwives in the hospital were horrible and were breastfeeding nazi's and wweren't helping me at all. I got really upset with them, which made them say that I had post natal depression and that I should stay in for longer... as soon as I went home and had the support of my hubby, I was fine. I cant help but think that if I had had her in the birth centre, I wouldnt be so paranoid about the horrible experience that I am sure I am going to have this time around, as I could have gone home and not had to deal with the feelings of powerlessness and distress.
At Osbourne park they also have this "chill out room" with soothing music, lighting displays on the wall and couches, kind off like a nightclub chill out room, they are investigating if that kind of atmosphere helps to relax you etc during labour, interesting, though i dont think you can order a vodka and cranberry,
Hi everyone,
I'm almost 27 weeks and expecting baby number 3, due on 14th Feb 2006. I have two ds aged 6yrs and 4yrs. We found out a couple of weeks ago that we're having a baby girl!! I was soooo excited as this is our last baby and to end with a baby girl after two wonderful sons is perfect.
This baby, like my last two will be born at Kalamunda Hospital a quiet little hospital set in the bush. They have great midwives and it's really peaceful. Looking forward to meeting my daughter soon. :)

Hi Laney, I thought Kalamunda was changing to a seniors hostel at the end of the year?
Or have they changed their minds again???
I was booked into Kalamunda with my first, but all didnt go to plan and I ended up at KEMH unfortunately. I grew up in Lesmurdie and both sets of parents live up there still so it would have been easier for everyone to come and visit!!! I was told that Kalamunda was closing, so therefore didnt consider it for this baby, but will be really excited if its staying put for a while :)
Hi Mummy-2-2
Friday 11th I got a phone call from the maternity ward at Kalamunda to confirm name, age, address etc. for my upcoming booking in Feb next year. I chatted with the midwife who assured me Kalamunda Maternity would remain open for at least 12 more months.
My OB. Dr B. Thyer is taking bookings for elective c-sections as late as April 2006, so if all goes well we will see the maternity ward open for a while longer! I just want to have my last baby at Kalamunda. Like you I grew up in Lesmurdie, Mum and Dad still there and for most friends visiting it's a lot easier and it's nice to have your babies born close to your family home.
I guess you can only go by what info your doctor has. I still have a little while to go so who knows . Have you made a final decision on the hospital for your bub yet?

Hi Laney,
No decision. Still trying to decide between King Edwards birth centre, Bentley Hospital and now Kalamunda.
I think I am leaning towards the birth centre, cos I live in Subi, so it is a 2 minute drive away, but then again I got REALLY narky, fat, impatient etc at the end of my pregnancy with my first, so Bentley is able to induce you (on the advice of a doctor) but pretty much when wanted, but you could end up in a room with 4 other women and babies once bubs is born, and I dont like that idea, but Kalamunda is, like I said before, so close to family and friends etc and is a far more appealing place than the other two.
hmmmm. decisions decisions!!
Got any advice? Anyone? HELLLPPPP!!!!!!
Hello everyone, thanks for all the replies, its great to hear other peoples experiences and plans :)
I havent been around for a while because ive been struggling with extreme tiredness and really bad morning sickness, so its been an effort to do even basic things, i am hoping it will pass soon tho!
I am going to book in for a tour with the King Edward Birthing Centre before i make my decision but i will probably end up going there as it seems to appeal to me more than any of the other places, not sure why but just a feeling i have so i think ill go with that.
Its true that you do have to check out of the Birthing Centre after 24 hours but if you feel you still need rest and care you can then transfer to the actual hospital and stay there if you need to, this seems like a good option.
As im going public i havent got an ob or even had an ultrasound yet, my gp said they wont even see you until 12 weeks, Im 8 weeks now so its still another 4 at least, im finding it so hard waiting to see the baby but im sure it will be worth it!

Hi Perth Mummies,
My advice about KEMH is avoid it if you can. I had my baby there 16 weeks ago and I would'nt reccomend it to my worst enemy!
Apparently the public part of Armadale hospital is really nice and the staff are great.
My midwife at KEMH was great but the whole rest of my experience was terrible. I will be going to Murdoch SJOG next time.
Goodluck with all the pregnancies and births. :)
Hi Mummy -2-2,
Kalamunda is no doubt a fair hike from Subi, but we need all the little babies we can get born up here to keep our chances of saving the maternity ward alive :D ! A good friend of mine from Kalamunda is a midwife at Bentley, she had her 2 dd 6 and 4 there. I would be happy to ask her advice if you like, she's worked at KEMH, Bentley and Kalamunda. She'll be honest and give me the pros and cons.
Of course you can only go with what suits you and your hubbie. My husband has to work while I'm in hospital so my Mum has my boys for at least a week. I'm having a c-section (booked 6th Feb), so unfortunately I'm in for a min 5 days. So keeping it close to home is the easiest option.
It's such a huge decision isn't it. Even when it's number 2 or 3+ we have so many choices now days. Best of luck and let me know if you would like some secret midwife inside advice. :)
Hi guys
I wasn't sure when I should post on this one as I'm only just over 4wks. Thing is that I've been considering going to the dr this week to get my referral to an Obstetrician, as they all seem to book up pretty fast.
I'm going with an OB as last time (I wasn't in WA) I had a cs and regardless of what I do this time (VBAC or CS) I want medical back up. (Also I might as well use my private health cover and I like the idea of one OB throughout). My closest private hospital is Mercy (I think) and someone spoke about Dr Thyer - he delivers there. Last time I had shared care (half the appointments were with a midwife) which was great, but apparently none of the OB's who deliver at Mercy do shared care.
My sister just delivered at Murdoch and had an absolute dream run. She delivered there last time (4years ago) and ended up with transfusions and bub at PMH - nothing to do with her care - she had HELLP syndrome.
Looking forward to hearing more of your experiences. :)

"Insider info" would be FANTASTIC!!!!
We are going for a tour of Bentley tonight, just to see what it's like and have an appt with one of their doctors on Monday to see if it is possible to be induced a couple of weeks early... if it is, then Bentley it is! If not, I'm back to the drawing board :p
I dont understand how people can be booked in for ceasars from 37 weeks (at public hospitals too) but someone cant elect to be induced at 38 weeks. Doesnt make sense to me
My tummy is getting so heavy now that I can hardly walk again (was just starting to be able to after not being able to at all since sept/oct) and have irratable uterus again this time, so its not like I am just impatient (well I am that too!!! :D ) Oh well we'll see what happens
Apparently the public part of Armadale hospital is really nice and the staff are great.
I had Jade there and I thought it was good (and I *hate* hospitals) Most of the midwives were fabulous.. the food is amazing, healthy and fresh, and the most you get is two to a room.. if you are lucky you get a single, but I liked the idea of having someone to talk to after the partners went home. We helped each other out, watched each other's baby while the other was in the shower (the bathrooms are in the rooms) etc. And we still keep in contact now. :)

Well I just had my tour of Bentley and was not impressed (no offence meant to anyone who has had a baby there)
Now I dont know what to do. I really dont think I can handle going 40-42 weeks with this pregnancy and was relying on the fact that I could get an induction at 38 weeks at Bentley.
I might ring Kalamunda tomorrow, but from what I was told with Tahlia, they are only Midwife run....but my mum said she was induced there, although that was 20 years ago.
I just dont know what to do. The worst thing is, I had private health and let it lapse thinking that this pregnancy would be fine and public hospitals do as good a job as private etc, which I dont doubt they do, they just wont induce you. If i had just kept it, I could go to a nice hospital, get induced, have the baby and come home
gggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
sorry, I'll go take out my frustrations on hubby, instead of here... im sure he'll appreciate it ;)

we are going with the KEMH birth centre next time due to the early release times and the more natural approach
you can be transfered to the main hospital if you decide you want and epidural or other drugs (they have gas there though) I have only heard positive things about KEMH birthing centre.
i guess you have to think "what sort of experience you want to have???" do you want to be left to birth your baby with minimal intervention? do you want to have access to all the mod cons? do what you feel will be best for you
IMO be as far away from the family as possible, even if you have lovely family (lucky i do) enjoy your babymoon and you dont have to worry about family "dropping by"
good luck with everything
Laney, i would love to hear your friends inside info as it might help me in my decision, pm me if you find anything out that you dont want to post in here.
Mummy-2-2, what didnt you like about bentley? i live really close to there so that would probably be my back up if i dont end up liking kebc.
I am leaning more towards kebc for the fact that you have the option of the low intervention birth, i do want to be left alone with DH and it looks very comfortable. Its also good to know that if you need the help you can transfer to the hospital. If anyone else has any feedback though id be interested to know what you think. Its so hard trying to decide!

Hi everyone,
I am totally confused for you all and I am not even pregnant!!!
I had my son almost a year ago in Aberdeen, Scotland, quite a big city, it is by no means a back water hick town. We have 1 maternity hospital where everyone goes to give birth, there are no other choices. The midwives there are lovely, the food, well, it isnt so bad and they have everything you could need. I am scared to get pregnant here now because I dont think I could decide where to go and have baby!!
I guess the main thing to remember is that people will have had good and bad experiences at all the hospitals. You just have to go and have a look around and if your impressed then go with yout first instincts and general feelings about the place.
Good luck to you all x x

Hi Tulip,
Go and have a tour of Bentley, you might not be as fussy as I am, but it seemed old, dirty and like not much privacy to me.
When we got there, we were ushered into the day room (where mums go to get out of their rooms in the day) it was bare, the walls were dirty and chipped and there were just some dodgy tables and chairs in there.
Then we went for the tour. The labour rooms were small, with a dodgy hospital bed and we were told no sitting on the birthing balls cos of liability you might fall off. (with my first labour, i lived, sitting on the ball) There are no doctors there if something does go wrong, they have to be called in. There are no anaesthatists there if you decide on an epidural (with my first, baby was back to back with me and I ended up with an unplanned epi) and when the baby is born, you are transferred to a room with as many as four other mothers and babies. I personally would be scared that someone could take my baby. We were actually shown in a room which had a new mum in it. I couldnt believe it!!
I personally wouldnt be worried about not liking KEBC. It is lovely. double bed, couch, your own bathroom, Bentley only has a shared one, little outside courtyard per room I think, I know at least one room has it, partner can stay the night, and if something does go wrong, there are doctors there immediately. Even in the actual hospital (it has changed since I was there, it is a whole new ward now with birthing pool etc) but even in the old/ makedo ward, the rooms were about twice as big as Bentley's, so far more room to move around, there's balls, beanbags etc.
The only bad thing about the actual hospital that I had last time was the midwives looking after me, after I had the baby. But obviously, those will vary person to person, day to day. King Edward also have a greater amount of support for you ie physio, psych, education groups etc
The only reason I am looking at changing, is because I want to be induced early, but after I saw Bentley, I am rethinking things. Even Hubby said that the Birthing Centre seems like a 5* hotel compared to Bentley, and the next best thing to private.
Again I am sorry if you have had babies at Bentley. I dont mean to offend anyone. I am just fussy, and perhaps if other people went to see it, it wouldnt seem so bad to them.
Hi mummy 2-2, thanks so much for sharing that! theres no way ill bother even going on a tour because thats not the sort of place i want to go to. I remember when i was young and my mum had my brothers there and she had to share a room with 3 other women both times, just visiting her it wasnt a nice experience. I think ill definately go with kebc! Will post back after ive had a tour.

Thanks Tanuch and Welcome!!
I think I have finally made a decision. I've found a doctor who delivers at Kalamunda who is willing to have a look at 38 weeks and see if I am 'ripe' enough to induce. If I am, then Ajay will be born at Kalamunda, if I am not then he won't induce and I will just go to the King Edward Birthing Centre.
Not long to go now, only 6 weeks till 38 weeks and Christmas is within that time - so i guess it will just fly by.
Tulip, have you had your tour yet?
Laney - have you had a chat to your friend yet?
Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I havent been able to go for a tour yet as they only do them on a sunday afternoon and ive not been able to go then, However im going this sunday to check out the place... however when i rang up to ask about the tour the midwife was very upfront on the phone saying she needed to asj me questions before even saying i could come for the tour! it included whether id seen a gp, had the blood screening done etc - its lucky i made my doctor do the blood screening to check my iron levels because she didnt seem to be planning to them at any point.
Anyway ill report back how i go, i hope i like the place because at this point i dont like the sound of anywhere else much at all.
Just an update on myself aswell - ive still been battling extreme tiredness and m/s and on top of this i have ante-natal anxiety - ive seen a good doctor thought who has given me some strategies to work through when i feel anxious and so far it seems to be helping.
Mummy-2-2
01-12-2005, 23:40
anxiety, gotta love it!!
I have it normally, but especially when pregnant!!
King Edward have psychologists you can see, which cost nothing. I have seen them before and after having T, and am now seeing them with this pregnancy. The lady I see is lovely. Just a thought :)
How many weeks are you now? I had the morning sickness hardly at all this pregnancy, probably for a couple of weeks before the 12 weeks, and then only a couple of times since... with T, I was sick 12 weeks onwards for most of the day and most of the way to the end!! Hope you dont get anything like that!!
Ive had anxiety in the past aswell, usually only when theres a trigger though, its good to know you can see the psychologists at king edward for free because they are so expensive usually.
im just past 10 weeks now but ive had m/s since around week 6, and its been all day sickness too, i really hope it passes soon because its so debilitating!
Ive also got my ultra sound and nuchal scan in 2 weeks and i cannot wait! it will be my first chance to see the baby!
Mummy-2-2
05-12-2005, 10:52
Ultrasounds are so exciting, congrats!!!
To me, it seemed a lot more "real" after I saw the baby.... although I imagine morning sickness for the past four weeks seems pretty real!!!
We got our 20 week scan done at King Edward this time, and you can pay $20 something for a video of it!! Hubby transferred ours onto DVD and added music, its SOOOOO cool! We actually just had another one done at KE cos we wnt into pre term labour, and they did some in 3D, so we have actually seen what Ajay looks like!! Although Im not sure thats a good thing, cos we know what he looks like and that he's a boy, so I guess no surprises for us!!
Well i went on the tour yesterday of the King Edward Birthing Centre where i want to have the baby, and i have to say im completely sold on the place!
The place is run by midwives who follow you throughout your pregnancy, you see the same ones so they get to know you quite well. The premise of the birthing centre is that you have a low intervention birth and while its aimed to be natural they do have gas and pethidine. The rooms are great, it actually looks like a hotel! Nice big double bed, ensuite bathroom, huge bath if you want to spend your labour in it and each room even has its own private courtyard if you need fresh air! What i love about it the most is that DH can actually stay in there with me and sleep in the bed together which makes me feel alot more comfortable. Its also reassuring knowing that if i do need an epidural or episiotomy then i can just transfer to the hospital (3mins away). The only thing i was slightly worried about is that you have a maximum stay of 24 hours after the birth but after that the midwives visit you at home for 5 days. However if theres any medical reason i need to stay on i can be transferred to the hospital and continue my stay there.
So anyway ive booked in and should get my first appointment in about 5 weeks. I feel really good about the place, it had such a warm homely feeling that i almost found myself looking forward to the birth!! I also had alot of my questions answered so i feel so much more organised and reassured! It was kind of scarey not knowing where i was going when everyone else seemed to have it all mapped out. Anyway now i just have to start thinking about my birth plan!
Mummy-2-2
05-12-2005, 13:51
Good, I'm glad you like it!!
I have to say tho, I've been booked in there from the start (although was looking around as well) but I do not know the midwives very well at all. They used that as a huge selling point when I had my tour and I thought that was fantastic, but as yet have had three appointments and am 33 weeks preg. Thats just how they do things, you dont get as many appts as some other places.
But as to the rest of it, I completely agree, it is lovely.
They have so much stuff to link you to as well, like antenatal aquarobics, they have their own library in the main hospital, an open house once you have had the baby etc.
Congrats on choosing so early tho!!!
How far apart do they space out the appointments? i thought it was once a month until a cetain point, then every 2 weeks, then once a week at the end?? i have a pdf document that outlines it all ill have to double check, either ways though it still appeals to me more than a hospital. Someone else who actually went to the hospital said she'd always see a different doctor each time and everyone had a different opinion etc, i think itd be better at least to see a few familiar faces!

Um, At the moment I dont really know cos they kept my mpowher book last time I was there so a Doc could look at it. I am going back on Fri morning, so I will post back after then. Either that, or ring them. I dont really think its that important, if you have any questions, you just ring them up, and theyll help you and/or tell you to come in... but will get the details on Fri anyways

hi all i am jaclyn i have a 8month old daughter and am pregnant with my second i am 9 1/2 weeks and i am having this 1 at kemh like i did with my other bub.I thought they were great they were so supportive to me and looked after me really well as i am high risk category.I got induced with my first at 39 weeks they recommended me to stay 5 days but only stayed 2.They werent very good with the bf thing but when i went to a lactation consultant there and they were great and they were free.My daughter didnt bf for the first week as she didnt attatch and she had low sugar levels so i had to give her a bottle i expressed and a weeks later i was bf.With the birth they were great and encouraging me the whole way through i just demanded what i wanted and i got it lol. They had to pull my daughter out with vaccum and they were gonna cut me so i said to just pull her out and not to even think about doing that so they did. When i was in the ward the rooms were nice and peaceful and they even took my bub at night for me so i could sleep and the lady that looked after her was really nice. They even commented on what a great mum i already was and how it just came natural to me.I was always cuddling her when they came in :p .Well i am lookimg forward to having my baby there and they have changed so much since i visited some1 there years ago.Well nice to chat hear from u's soon.

Hi guys,
Poking my head in here again...I'm sort of more on the due in July thread. I'm starting to feel a bit more human now, but I definitely won't be counting my chickens so to speak. I was sick from weeks 6 till 16 with DS and this one started at week 4 but 10times worse. (I never threw up with DS -sorry for TMI). I think I'm feeling now how I did with DS (the edge has gone off it).
I'm looking forward to my second trimester too although I think I've got the furtherest to go in this group. Hopefully some more mums to be will join us. :p
3weeks on Friday till my first scan. My sister and I were talking about them tonight and we were saying we realise why there's the wait (my sis had 5m/c's between her two bubs), but I want to see our bub now! I'm so impatient. My DH just says - be patient, I'm sure all is fine and well - easy for him to say!
Anyway, counting down the days now till you meet your little one mummy-2-2 :D
Have a good night ladies. :)
Hi everyone and congrats on those pregnant. I had my first at KEMH birth center and loved it!!!. My second i had to transfer for an induction because i was post dates with gestational diabetes. Had one midfwife the whole time and she still set everything up like i was at the birth centre - delivered on a mat on the floor as i had done with my daughter. after the delivery i transfered back to the birth centre for the night. The midwives came out to see me for the next 5 days - so much better to get home , you get so much more rest becuse all your visitors always ring before coming. good luck

Hi everyone! Sorry havent been around much but ive been flat out with everything!
Well yesterday i had my first ultrasound and it was the most amazing experience ever! It was so beautiful to see the baby moving around and its little heart beating, i didnt realise how much it would actually look like a baby! This was supposed to be my 12 week u/s and also the nuchal scan however when they did the measurements they said that the baby was only 10 weeks 4 days! I had my dates spot on so i put this down to a late ovulation. Anyway since it was too early to do the nuchal scan i will be going back in 2 weeks for that, which is great because i get to see the bubby again!
Anyway other news is that ive been feeling fantastic lately, my m/s seems to have passed apart from a bit of nausea and my energy levels have picked back up! Im still finding fussiness with food but other than that no really problems. Ive also noticed my tummy has gotten a bit rounder and also hardened! Im setting up a babies online website so ill put some pics on and post the link next time if anyone wants to have a look, im also putting the u/s pic on there as its very cute
oh also pegasus - ill have to join you in the july thread now that im having a july bub!
and jacelyn welcome! look forward to sharing the journey with you :)

How exciting Tulip!! I love having ultrasounds too! They are truly amazing!!
I am glad you are all feeling better, hopefully you will stay that way til the end now!!
So am I right that you are all due around July? Thats just unfair! you wont have to deal with the "fat, swollen and frumpy" fashion that is my life at the moment!
Although, when I had T (in Sept) i was dealing with the "fat, fat, fat and fat" feeling that is wearing winter clothes, so maybe I just have issues with being pregnant!!!
Well I am 34 + weeks now, and still hoping to be induced at 38, so not long for me!!
YAYAYAYAYAY!!
Congratulations Tulip of your up and coming arrival of a little bubba! They are so wonderful. A lot of fun, and really let you know you are alive!! Keep us all updated on how it all goes, from ultrasounds, to heartbeats, to the actual big day. Gives me butterflies thinking about it all over again!
Once again, congratulations and enjoy every minute of it.
Love Brooke

I had my ultrasound a week and a half ago for dates so i was so excited i got to see my little bub swimming around i seen the head its little legs and arms and ubilical cord it was amazing and i also got to hear my little bubs heartbeat i didnt even know you could hear it so early i never got to hear my first ones till 18 weeks.I also ovulated late i am 10 weeks tomorro but am suppose to be 12 weeks tomorro bye my LMP.If you guys wanna check some photos out of my family and my latest u/s goto http://spaces.msn.com/members/Gerritsenfamily/PersonalSpaces catch up with u girls later and have a good weekend.
hey all :)
Im also from Perth but in Eastern Europe at the moment , my baby is due 13th June , once I finally make it home I will be 6 months pregnant - so I wont have much time to decide which hospital im choosing , my mum gave birth to my sister at KEMH , it was 15 years ago , but she was extremely happy with their service - and she bottlefed... but a lot of people dont like it ? ? ? so im thinking every experience is a different one and we'll all just have to check our chosen hospital out for ourselves .. either way - good luck to you all ! :)

Mummy-2-2 Wow you're so close now not long at all! You must be really excited :)
Jacelyn - We're pretty close in due dates how exciting! Where are you planning on having the birth? Also I tried to check out your msn space but it says not available?
Enigma - You'll still have a bit of time to find a venue when you return, ive heard the most good things about King edward over bad things and especially the birthing centre which is not actually part of the hospital so thats why i chose there. Whereabouts are you in eastern europe?
Anyway updates from me im still feeling good, no real morning sickness unless i go without a meal for over 5 hours then i start feeling it, im still a bit moody but no real dramas! Im on annual leave as of christmas and really looking forward to some rest which i need!
Hope everyone else is doing well :)
oh also here is the link to the site i made which has pics of my tummy and ultrasound have a look if you like!

Hi all
Yeah not long to go now and Im not sure if excited is the right word, more fed up I think!! My doc is talking now of not inducing me at 38 weeks and I am starting to get worried, I was relying on it now being over in 3 weeks, but now it may not happen and if I go late, that is 7 weeks away.... I dont think I can last that long:eek:
Your pics are so cute J&S and Tulip... you are game to put photos of yourself up, i HATE photos!!!
Hi everyone
I'm new to this bit of the forum - have already posted a few messages on the 'When are you due?' thread, but thought I would also make contact here. I've been living in Perth now for about 6 years and am 18 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Due June 14th at SJOG Subiaco all being well! All my good friends seem to have cleared off interstate or overseas recently and my family is in Hobart, so feeling a bit lonely. Great to know there are others out there going through the same stuff.
Think I have felt some kicking in last few days, but hard to know, just sort of bubbly motions and shifting about. It's all getting so exciting now and seeming more real.
Anyway, great to meet everyone and look forward to lots of chat!

:) Hi - Like Zeta I am new to this...in fact new to the whole site - don't know how took me so long to discover:rolleyes: as been doing lots of baby web surfing... My first is due on 13.06.06 and really excited! Only moved to Perth in July so kinda still settling in...we are renting in Belmont/Ascot at mo...but looking maybe to buy down in Rockingham area by due date...or maybe we will stay here and rent some more...I am at mo planning KEMH...done no tour or anything as didn't know you could(my GP just sees me once a month and takes blood pressure until after 20 wk scan) Posted a message in 'due in June' too - this is all really new to me first time mum, new city, new country, new life...so many decisions to make...in UK you just have it in your local maternity hospital...and see a midwife from when you find out I think... we going Public as I hadn't had insurance for long enough when I fell...and seem to have heard good things about KEMH.:) Not sure about having felt baby as not sure what supposed to feel though definitely starting to get strange feelings inside my tum that different from wind! Anyway love to hear from anyone else out there in Perth, husband away alot so feel quite alone at times esp as no family out here and they all in Europe! Scan on 31st (i think- pregnesia strikes again!) so really looking forward to that and think we will find out what bump is...which is again v.exciting! Though I not too fussed as long as healthy! See ya!;)

Hi everyone,
I was stoked to find this chat as I've just had my world turned upside down and needed to speak to other Perth Mums! Kalamunda Hospital Maternity is closing in April and I am due in June. My lovely ob/gyn Dr Jane Talbot doesn't admit to any other hospitals anywhere near me and the ones she does admit to, I wouldn't be guaranteed that she would deliver me, I probably wouldn't even know the person delivering me!
So that got me quite flustered and as a result I've decided to go private. I'm looking at SJOG Murdoch at the moment. After ringing 6 different Obs, Dr Mincham can squeeze me in, I'm feeling quite unsettled having to get to know a new person and I would have preferred a female Dr, I guess feeling they could relate better to the experience. I am really sad I won't be able to share my experience with Dr Talbot as she put me at ease from the moment I met her.
I think its outrageous that the Govt is closing Kalamunda Maternity and I know it has upset many people in my area.
Anyone know of Dr Mincham or had experience at SJOG Murdoch?
Thanks,
MoonstoneMumma

Hi all,
I am only new to Perth and I am 15 weeks pregnant. My husband and I are now living in Marangaroo.
My due date is 12-7-06 - so close to you Tupil. Which hosptial are you going to? My dr has reccomended osborne park. Are they any other perth mums to be goiing to the same place at the same time as me?
hey there carmel:D
Sorry to hear about all that fussing around . I have had all my DD at SJOGM under Chris Gunnell ( he is FANTASTIC - though VERY busy) but my cousin had Micham (sp?) as Dr Blair was away. Micham induced her etc & she said he was really good - it was her first bub too:D . Other than that i dont know much else - ithink he is new at murdoch(?) but i really dont know. There is supposed to be a female GP who delivers at murdoch im assuming u have tried her too? or there is an Alanna Gilbert at Attadale-dont know if she delivers at murdoch though but my ob told me she was really good - he now works with her too
Murdoch is great too! All 3 of our bubs have been born there & i've never had anything to complain about. Your lucky you'll be in the new section- i've seen it & its lovely, really modern & big (double beds too:eek: ) I was in the old St Mary's...hopefully if i can convince (sp?) DH to have 1 more i'll be able to go to the new part too!!!
Hope this helps you feel al little more assured btw CONGRATULATIONS too:p

Kristy,
Thanks so much, that really has helped me, I'm glad you've not only heard of him, but your cousin has had experience with him! I don't know why I'm so nervous, well I guess I do, its a big deal
Dr Gunnell is fully booked and the two ladies clinics are too far/too much hassle to drive for appointments as I live in the Hills. So Dr Mincham it is!!
After reading your reply, I've made up my mind and will be going on a tour of SJOG when I get home (DF & I work in the pilbara and fly home once a fortnight) so I think that will help tremendously too. I have heard from friends who went there (not for maternity), that you can get milkshakes in the middle of the night, so it can't be all that bad.
Thanks so much for replying and so quickly too, I'm driving everyone here nuts talking about it.
Best of luck in convincing your DH to go for a 4th!! :D
Thanks again,

Hi everyone!!
Welcome to everyone I havent spoken to before!!
Well Ive just had my bubs at KEMH. Was tossing up between the birthing centre and Kalamunda- but ended up in the the normal KE hopsital.
I have previously written on here how much I HATED King Edward last time around- well this time was FANTASTIC! I could not recommend it enough:) (No milkshakes in the middle of the night tho!!)
The renovated labour ward is really nice and all the midwives were lovely and waited only about 10 mins for anaesthatist once I decided to go the epi.
Congrats to you all on your Pg.
Talk soon

I am curerntly deciding about pain control methods, one of the options i am looking at is being in water to start with and then going for the epidual. would you reccomend it?

Completely.
I wanted "natural" this time (until the pain kicked in) tried the gas, it made me "drunk" and didnt do anything for the pain, so the epi it was.... instant relief!!!!
and you still can feel when you have to push. At least I have been able to both times . And then you can push the little button that gives you more pain relief, and then if youre legs go wobbly, just dont press the button for a while. I found that it gave me the "power" to give myself how much was needed without having to wait for someone to do it for me.
After I had Ajay, there were no beds in the ward, so we ended up staying in the labour ward and I heard a lady giving birth and she was SCREAMING and YELLING and HOWLING and CRYING etc, and the midwife said "well she obviously hasnt had an epi" So from the sounds of it, it is fairly common to have one.:p

 Its the part of the whole pregnancy that i think my brain has tried to block out...I was reading articles the other day in Pregnancy and Birth and all of a sudden it hit me - bugga I am going to have to go throught this:eek: I'm kind of taking this whole pregnancy in bite size pieces and going with what happens day by day/week by week. Not even booked into hospital only because my GP won't refer me to KEMH until after my 20 wk scan. He says it not necessary until 22 weeks if you fit and healthy etc...though today when I rang to book my parent ed classes they were shocked that i hadn't been booked in to hospital for birth yet and hadn't seen someone already - they suggested i attend a healthy pregnancy class on 13th Feb apparently I will be pretty far on as 24 weeks the latest they take people on it.
Guess thats what happens when you go public and you totally naive (being from UK and also 1st time). Had to ask my husband what an epidural was...and still not sure that the way i want to go - is it dangerous?

I had a bad expirience with an epidural in kemh i had it when i was 10cm dialated cause they never bothered to check yet my friend went to the same hospital 9 weeks before and asked at 10cm and they said it was too late. They gave me spinal block wich makes u feel nothing and epi to top myself up well i ended up pushing for 3 hrs because i couldnt feel nothing if you do get an epi refuse a spinal block get them to check how dialated you are and if u are not like me and ready to push go for an epi and get them to turn it down before you push that way you have the feel of bearing down. But thats just my opinion and thats what i will be doing this time but hopefully i will go drug free.I had a 16hr labour with dd and had one shot of morfein 9 hrs into labour and epi 3 hrs before she came out so i didnt really have much pain relief.
Hello everyone!
Sorry i havent been around much, ive had so much going on! Family wise theres been a few issues, mainly MIL was upset with some things in my birthing plan which stipulated no visitors in the first week (i have only 24 hours at the birthing centre then its off home!) anyway ive gotten thru it all by thinking people are always going to think of themselves first and that the baby is all about them, i just have to take it all with a grain of salt and know that i know what is best for us and the baby!
On the pregnancy front im just past 16 weeks now, i havent felt any movement or flutters yet which worried me initially but at my last u/s they told my my placenta is located at the front, so considering this is also my first baby its unlikely ill feel anything for even a few more weeks! Im disappointed because i have no other pregnancy symptoms so a few movemtns would actually be reassuring but ill have to wait i suppose.
In 2 weeks i have my morphololgy scan where they can tell us the sex! We cant wait until that because although we've bought most things we havent bought anything pink or blue yet so once we know i can let loose and get everything! I also want to do a theme in the baby's room, something really cute like fairies for a girl or whinnie the pooh for a boy! Im such a traditionalist i spose!
Everything else is going well, im starting to look pregnant, when i wake up in the morning theres a little bump but by the end of the day i seem to explode and i look quite pregnant, im not sure if its gas or food, but i cant wait until i have a proper tummy thats for sure! Another thing ive noticed as well is my brain has gone to jelly - i cant remember a thing and i also keep saying the silliest things! Luckily i have an excuse!
I hope you're all doing well :) Ill have to make sure i get in here to chat more! Do any of you use msn chat?
ALso NIkki a big congrats on the baby!!! :D

anyone else had their scan out of hospital ie: in the burbs/at a radiological centre?
I had my 2nd scan today and everything really good - healthy and all the right weight lengths etc...FHR 140BPM. Only thing I was dissapointed about was the machinery they used (UNiRadiology)was quite old and the images were not as clear as I had somehow expected...and so no pics to send me hubby up north:( saw lots of healthy bones though! The baby was sitting on heels throughout scan sucking thumb (asleep no doubt (well it was early this morning!) and without the latest technology and without sawing me in half they were unable to tell what sex  which is ok I guess but cos DH wanted to know so much I kinda got excited about it too! Oh well it'll be a surprise! But she did say in WA they tend to scan at 30 weeks too - is that true? Anyway just to poke its tongue out at me the baby been moving about tons this afternoon!
So thats another milestone out of the way - now finally my GP will write a letter of referral to KEMH and apparently I have to wait for a card in the post with date of my first ante natal visit at KEMH...is anyone else out there going public? HAs anyone else had to wait till 20 weeks plus to be referred? Just seems everyone been on tours, all booked in and having s*** hot scans :o and feel like I really bummed out a bit...by falling pregnant before I was 3 months into my health insurance but I had only been in the country for 2 months when I fell!
Sorry if sound like moaning:rolleyes: I am thrilled that all okay! just all alone with DH away for weeks and feeling a bit confused/low about it all...
hi georgiem
I had my first scan at an skg radiology clinic, i was annoyed with that because it cost me $108 and i only got $50 back, and that was only because they put it thru as a dating scan. It turned out it was too early to do the nuchal scan so i had to go back 2 weeks later and pay the $108 again. Despite all my efforts to arrange both these scans at KEMH i was told that they dont see you/deal with u until at least after 12 weeks or so. Anyway because i needed the nuchal scan done between 12 and 13.5 weeks i had no choice but to get a referral thru my gp and have it done privately. Ive heard so many different things from other people who said they had theirs thru a hospital etc so im not sure why they couldnt organise it with me. However i was happy with both scans, the technology was good and i got pics both times (this was at the west perth branch).
In regards to the first antenatal visit, i am actually going to the King edward birthing centre which is separate from the hospital. I organised this myself, i told my doctor and they sent a referral but i dont think they needed too. All i did was arrange a tour when i was about 8 weeks pregnant, i went for the tour and on the day filled out the forms and 2 weeks later i received my first appointment in the mail. This was sheduled for about 6 weeks later or so but at least i knew when i'd be seeing them! Im not sure how they do it at the hospital, it may be a different system!
Im now booked in for my morphology scan (19weeks) which is being done thru KEMH, and that ive told is free. (im a public patient in case i forgot to explain that before!)
Anyway i hope this has helped, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

Hi All,
Thankyou all so much re: epi, very useful information. I have just realise that Tulip and I are due very close to each other, shame we are going to separte hospitals!
I have my next scan on feb 17th and we are planning to find out the sex. we are renting a place and one room is blue the other pink - so we can't wait to start decorating!
i had my first scan at the skg in west perth 2 weeks ago they were real nice and i got a pic but it cost $133 and no rebate( im a public ppt) and i was wondering what happens when ppl cant afford to get these scans?? i wasnt offered any other option, is there another option? i have my 1st meeting with the birthing centre next week and am hoping they will arrange the 2nd scan for me.

my doctor bulk bills and the radiological place he sends you to does too...so thats how we got for free - um though not sure I would recommend the Belmont place - they very nice but machiney bit old...um the perth radiology centres charge you but you do get your gap back...all depends i think on who your doc uses...but yeh maybe the birthing centre get it done for you I don't know...Tulip may??
I know what you mean though we couldn't have afforded to pay that each time...I do have health insurance but signed up too late for the pregnancy.

If you are talking King Eddy, EVERYTHING is free.
Scans, blood tests, physio, dietician, psych, whatever you need really, including a library.... ask the BC midwives about it.
Also ask at the scan if they dont automatiucally do it, for a 3d one. I got one about 10 weeks ago and they said the equip was REALLY new and thats why I didnt get one at 20 weeks. You can also get a vid of the scan for minimal money (20 i think) and it is well worth it!! Hubby put ours onto DVD and added music, I must have watched it a billion times before Ajay was born!!:)

wow - wish i'd known that!!:p sounds fantastic!!
Mind you my sonographer did say in WA that they do sometimes scan again at 30 weeks...so maybe...
I tell you by the time we have another one I am gonna be a pro...I won't timidly accept everything I am told by GP and not contact the BC...(we now wish we had!)and will have everyone elses experiences info to be armed with...Is anyone else who a 1st time Mummy2be already thinking about another one or are we the only crazy ones??:D
Gotta fly supposed to be giving myself a day out - but really getting hot in this weather so may just pop to shops and come back and have a swim (we have a pool in our complex) - the bus/train not too appealing today...tempting though as I have made a list of baby shops and maternity places in Subi and that was my plan today...see how I feel once out there!byeeeee:)

i have only had one emergency one at six weeks, and they bulk billed me. that was at mercy hospital at their SKG. apparently they bulk bill students and health care card holders, which i am both. i am really hoping my 20 week one is free, i have booked in there too (not that i am having a baby there - mercy is soo expensive and they have triangle spas! how cool would that be!).
what hospitals are you all going to? i was booked in at king edward but have swapped to osbourne park cause it was alittle less crowded and just been renovated and a few of my friends had their babies there and said the midwives were quite nice. and i was scared that king edward would make me leave after 24 hours and i wouldnt know how to breastfeed....im a reall worrier!
toodles!

Well, I had an eventful 24 hours or so! Yesterday morning a lady reversed into me from her driveway as I was turning right down our street...I was well shooken up (I know bad English!)but went to work as my car not too damaged etc etc...I had a really sharp pain in my tum where the seat belt had pulled in and it got worse during the day and was having contraction like feelings...so I thought I better get this checked out...went to KEMH...they were so great didn't make me feel silly for worrying...said best thing to do...I went to the foetal assesment unit and they scanned the baby and I had a doppler used for the first time...and bub was fine moving lots and no clot - thank god...but they kept me in overnight...the staff were fab up on the ward...and really looked out for me... even though I know they were busy with mummies having babies and ladies getting over caeserians...all in all I was discharged this afternoon and told prob stretch/tear ligament from impact and that the little one all indications great...wooooah that was a relief - first time it really hit me I am carrying a little life...I was really scared it would be hurt!
Anyway I am definitely convinced KEMH the place I going even though we moving probly in March to near Rockingham...they have all the equipment there and really nice team midwifery and I just got a really good vibe. Plus okay its not the Ritz and okay there aren't milkshakes in middle of night but it wasn't crowded I didn't feel like a number and the room was you know a lot better than some i have stayed in. I also noticed that there were husbands about during the non visiting hours and I asked about the 24 hour thing and was told only at the Birth centre is that what happens for sure... in the main bit they make sure you can breastfeed and are comfy with baby and psychologically okay before they discharge you. :)
Thats not to say that for no2 when our insurance actually covers me I won't go to a private hospital (hotel) but I would still perhaps look at KEMH if there was any chance of complications. I think all in all it is really an individual thing, and where someone may love, the next person may hate...and whats right for one pregancy may not be for another...
Ta ta for now...
Georgiem: Wow im glad you and the bub were ok! That must have been so scarey! Did u tell the lady you were pregnant? Is she going to pay for your car repairs?
I am booked in to King Edward Birthing Centre - the 24 hours discharge is good for me because i hate hospitals and will be eager to get home. If for some reason i havent mastered breastfeeding i still have the midwife who comes to visit every day for 5 days or at worst i can go to the breastfeeding clinic for support.
Only 5 more days until my scan where we will find out the sex, i really hope the bub doesnt have its legs shut or anything! We are so eager to know :)

;) Yeh I hope I not in for too long as I would rather be at home with my hubby! I think it great at hte birth centre your hubby can be there all the time! But I think I know I will need more than just gas and air :) my husband seems to think I will be screaming for an epidural...charming! He says he was a big baby 9lb plus!, and my stepdaughter was big too(I think 9ib) and I scared!! I hoping baby takes after me and my sisters we were all between 5ilb 6 and 6lb12!
If I was at home in Uk and everything closer and family around I may have even considered a home birth...knowing my regional maternity hospital less than 10 minute drive away even though we lived in country!
Good luck with your scan hopefully yur little one less shy/or naughty than mine...even when I had my scan to check all okay they couldn't see! still sitting in frog position! and it was hiding the 2nd and 3rd time the midwife tried to get its heart on the doppler...I starting to think maybe a girl...but my husband thinks its a boy...
Hey ladies, just joined and thought I would introduce myself!
Im Anna, my Dh is Ryan and we live SOR. Our first baby is due in Oct! I am booked into Mercy Mt Lawley, anyone heard good or bad about it? Our hosp tour is at the end of Feb but it looks ok from what I can see on the website.
It will be nice to get to know you guys as I dont have any pregnant friends IRL except for one - Hi Tanya (Tulip). I promise I will get off my lazy butt and catch up with you soon!
i had my bubs 7wks ago at kemh....i was suprised they didnt show me how to do anything eg bath, nappies etc luckily my mum was there to hekp me....i had an old bag of a midwife wen i was in labour....next time i think ill go some where else

gosh - thats unlucky...I have had nothing but gr8 experience so far in pregnancy at KEMH...though obvious not given birth yet...the midwives I have seen on my team seem gr8 and have been really helpful...and when I was in overnight ...they were helping the ladies who gave birth with all that stuff...I hope I don't get same as I am on other side of world from my mum...and think am going to be a total doofus when it comes to all the basic things!

I said the same thing Niki, and then next time went to the birth cantre for most of the pregnancy and ended up back in the hospital cos I was induced, but they were lovely the 2nd time around.
I wrote in my birthplan EXACTLY what I wanted to happen and what happened last time, and they made sure everything went as I wanted it... even down to hubby staying the night when he wasnt sposed to:)
Hi ladies sorry havent been around for aggges but time just seems to slip away from me lately!!!
We had our 18 week scan 2 weeks ago and guess what! Our baby is a BOY! I was surprised as was expecting a girl but we are really happy, DH is especially stoked he has his little boy now and already has sports and things planned out.
Ive done a tonne of shopping lately, bought HEAPS of clothes in various sizes, and starting buying things for the nursery. We have chosen a winnie the pooh theme (common i know but so cute) and everything so far matches, a rug, cot mobile, bouncer, photo frames etc. Im having so much fun setting it all up and preparing.
Im now just gone 20 weeks and although i still have halfway to go i really feel like i can see the finish line!! After a few hassles where i thought i may not end up at the birthing centre its been resolved and will still be birthing there. Ive been learning hypnobirthing techniques to cope with the pain so hopefully that can pull me through, however if i do end up needing an epidural and go to the hospital i certainly wont beat myself up over it!
This second trimester has treated me really well and all in all i have to say ive never felt so good/healthy! My only complaints of late are an achey back and hips, but i think thats because i work on my feet and 5 hours without sitting down is taking its toll. My hours fluctuate though being part time so i rest where i can. Ive put my maternity leave form in for the end of may but im pretty sure ill end up leaving earlier due to the physical strain of my job.
Other good news we had recently was that the pay rise DH gets in july is going to cover my entire lost income so we'll be fine money wise. And although im taking maternity leave i dont actually plan on returning to work, at least not until the baby goes to school. I know it will be a total shock to the system but im really looking forward to being a sahm, its all ive ever really wanted to *do* with my life!
Anyways hope everyone is going well :)
Mummy2-2 - How is AJay going? Id love to see some pics!
