Hi,

My bubs turns 1 in 3 weeks... He still drinks 4 bottles of formula per day 200 in the morn and at night and 2 150ls during the day.
Now my question is can he start to have cows milk and how much milk should he have per day.
I have introduced a cup but I have not tried his milk in it.

Thanks.

Dear Diannekb,

Unless there are specific concerns regarding allergies or intolerance to cow’s milk (such as a family history), it can be introduced from 12 months.

At this stage, milk should become a drink and not be a meal. The amount of milk your toddler should have will also depend on how many other dairy foods he is eating. As a one year old, he should be having 4 -6 serves of dairy each day. One serve would be 125mL of milk / small tub of yoghurt or custard / cube of cheese.

It is important to make sure that milk intake doesn’t affect the amount of food that he is eating.

It is great that you have introduced the cup – now is the time to offer milk from it. This will assist his oral development and help to reinforce milk as being just a drink, not a comforter or meal in itself.
