my DS has some nasty sores on his bottom that are spreading, so we took him to the hospital after hours GP last night (yes, christmas night!). he said it looks like an initial insect bite, with a secondary bacterial infection. we need to put some ointment on it 3 times a day, and watch it carefully....
my question.... can i still use cloth, or will the ointment ruin the nappies? ive read you shouldnt use nappy rash cream etc, so would this be the same?
TIA

i would think you can still use them i used cream with my girls in there nappies and i never had and problem with it. sorry not much help
Use cloth with a liner of some sort to product the nappy itself. If you choose to use fleece liners, you may have to do a 'strip wash' at some stage to prevent the fleece from clogging up and repelling moisture (instructions at www.ozclothnappies.org ). Or you can use disposable liners but I find them a bit yukky.

thanks. i dont have any fleece liners, so it would have to be disposable liners. the sores are in a difficult position though, that the cream would most likely still go on the nappy, because the liner doesnt protect the entire nappy KWIM?
i just dont want to ruin my nice new nappies
Is it ointment or cream? Ointments are translucent and greasy-ish, sorta like Vaseline. Creams are white, more like facial moisturiser.
Most creams, like Bactroban cream (a common prescription for skin bacterial infections), will wash out pretty easily with hot water/detergent. Ointments, not so much.
You could try rubbing the ointment in to some spare cotton fabric and see if it washes out easily under a warm tap with some soap.
Another idea: If you don't have any fleece at home and can't get to a fabric store, do you have any other fabric? A flannelette baby blanket, a muslin square? You could cut something like this up and lay it into the nappy.

Ariene is teething and her poos just seem to burn as soon as they touch the skin (I know, I know, it's a bit of an old wives' tale, but I swear we have these probs every time a new tooth is on the way) and I am using some Daktozin. Usually Cruash powder is sufficient, but it's really bad at the moment. The cream is very heavy, greasy, white-coloured antifungal/antibacterial stuff, and I am protecting my BBB's from it by using a disposable liner. I don't have any cloth liners yet (but only use fitteds at night and so havn't really had a need for them) but I'd be too worried about the oils transferring from the liner to the nappies in the wash..
