We are moving to Canberra sometime in March and we have started to look at houses to buy there. We have been seeing a lot of nice houses for sale in Holt and I was just wondering is this a nice area to live or is it a bit out of the way and difficult for transport into the city etc....
We have also seen a few on the other end in Conder.

If you have any good or bad reviews I would love to read about them.
Thanks Donna
:xmas: MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE :xmas:

Holt is good  Its on the outskirts of belconnen and about 15mins drive from the belconnen mall. Its a typical belconnen suburb, the bus route goes through there. The belconnen area in general is good i think :) I dont know about conder, it looks like a very nice area but its very very far away, far tuggeranong. It depends where you'll be working etc.

See im in the tuggers area and i would say the opposite to lil mamma, see i think that tuggers is nice and is close to all of teh things i would normaly do yet belco is to far out for my liking... i think you will get a dif oppinion from each person you speak to..
I think in the end its a matter of where you (like lil mamma said) work and what you plan to do with your spare time...
If your working over north side find something over there, if your on south side find something over here, cause otherwise you'll be driving for ages through traffic from one side to the other and you will find that most of your days are spent in traffic...

Ask around tho maybe someone else will give you a better response then me lol...

Good luck tho..

It's only about 45 minutes from one end of Canberra to the other, so neither is really all that far. Each has a big shopping centre and bus route. I lived in Conder for 10 years and it was ok.

I live in the next suburb over to condor, Theodore its lovely down south canberra its very hilly and the scenary is a lot nicer to the other side of canberra (personal preferance) in winter its lovely cause u can see the mountains covered in snow on the oposite side to condor but doesnt get HEAPS windy cause the mountains block the wind, when we lived in gungahlin it was So much more windier than livin over here cause they dont have as much mountains as the south side. Dont get me wrong north side is nice too but as a personal preferance south side is much more newer and set out a bit differently...

I live in the next suburb to Holt and personally we love it. This is the 4th house in this suburb that I've lived in - can't stay away.

I agree that you need to live close to the things you need like work. From here distances are minimal to anywhere - 5 minutes to Belconnen Mall, 15 minutes to Civic, 20 minutes to Woden, 30 minutes to Tuggeranong (shopping). All by car, of course.

From Conder Tuggeranong Hyperdome is about 10-15 minutes, Woden is 15-20, Civic probably closer to 30 minutes. This is non-peak time of course.

Shinebrite, we also have views of the snow covered Brindabellas in winter - they do surround the ACT after all.

The other thing to think about is the type of house you want. If you want a nice shiny "newish" house, then south Tuggeranong or Gungahlin are the choices. If it's more important for you to have a decent sized yard , streets that are more than one car wide, and houses that aren't on top of each other (and generally have bigger rooms etc) then choose the older suburbs like Holt.

I don't get into the whole northside/southside is better debate because it's purely a matter of personal choice. I'd much rather give practical information that might help you make a relatively informed choice.

Thank you everyone for your replies you have given us a lot to think about.
We hope to buy straight away as we really hate renting expecially with a little one and your views have given us a little bit more of an idea of what would work for us, ie house size, location, travel times and of course scenery...
I think the hardest part now is the logistics of the move and the fact I wish I could be there before the QLD summer really kicks in!!!!!
Hope to meet you all some day once we move down there.

Hi Donna!!!

I'm from the South and personally I love this area. If you want a new house as someone else said Condor is the place you'll find that, if you want an old house Holt is where you'll get that.

If you buy in the south you'll already have one friend close by!!

I am from Gordon which is next to Conder, you have a shopping centre at Lanyon which is conder a choice of 3 direct child care centres, 2 public schools & a catholic school.
The block sizes in conder are decent size & so are the houses. (big enough for a pool & room to moove in most cases) They aren't 1/4 acre blocks but are still big enough.
If you have a look on all homes you will be able to get a rough idea, of what is around. Both holt & conder have their advantages & disadvantages, they both have kangaroos bouncing around the main roads of an evening. Conder is closer to Fyshwick, Woden, Tuggeranong & roughly the same distance to Civic as Holt is but we are further away from Belconnen. Good Luck in what ever you choose

The roos are everywhere, there is no way of escaping that.
