View Full Version : Drinking water - boiled or bottled?

Hi
We've been giving my 6mo boy sips of water since early months. Normally we buy bottled water, boil it and then cool it down. One nurse told me recently that we shouldn't be giving him bottled/purified water as it doesn't have fluoride in it, which babies need for teeth development. I was wondering if tap boiled water is ok. That's what we drink ourselves anyway but I though giving it to a baby might be a bit risky as it might have lead, copper and all those nasties in it. Can you please recommend the best solution.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Olivia,

The quality of the tap water varies in different parts of Australia and not all states have fluoridated water, so the recommendations may vary depending on where you live (particularly rural vs. metro). Tap water, however, is generally recommended for babies and children because of the added fluoride – it helps to protect their teeth.

I would suggest that if the local tap water has been recommended by your CHN that it should be safe for your bub to drink. Check with your local health department or water supplier if you are unsure.

Which ever form of water you choose to use – whether tap, bottle or rain – always freshly boil and cool the water for bubs under 6 months, and up to 12 months if you prefer.

Finally, while fluoridated water is recommended for bubs’ teeth, avoid over-exposure to fluoride in the first 18 months – 2years while teeth are developing. This includes staying away from fluoride tablets and regular toothpaste. If in doubt, check with your dentist.
