Do vets charge to get a male doggy "done"
And also, how long does it take and do they put them to sleep or what?

It depends on how large the dog is as to how much it will cost. The bigger the dog the more the expense as more anaesthetic is used for the operation. They are asleep whilst being neutered. It generally doesn't take more than an hour or two however, it takes the dog a good 24-48 hours to recover from the anaesthetic.

Neutering a male dog is often cheaper than desexing a female as it is less invasive and less anaesthetic is used as the operation much quicker.

It generally costs around $150 to desex a male dog but some vets may be cheaper or more expensive (this is going off a medium sized dog)

I rang around our local vets before Naughty Pup arrived. They were all around $200 unless the dog was over 40kg, then it goes up depending on how much he weighs... You think it would be an easier thing to remove a giant set of ____!

Hi, where i come from there is a programme for people on health care cards that give you half price de-sexing. I dont know about Tas but it might be worth calling around to see if that is offered if money is a worry. de-sexing male dogs ia a much less intrusive proceedure then de-sexing *****es but they still do have to go under to have it done.

Good luck

You don't come from Brisbane do you?... Half price would really help us because our boy will weigh a tonn by the time he's ready to be desexed! The breeder and the vet recommended waiting till around 12 months as large breeds mature more slowly!!!

Our vet charged $170. Billy had a general anesthetic. We dropped him off at 9:30 and pickedhim up at 4:00. He was a bit out of it but was fine by the next day.

BTW- Billy is a small dog.

No not Brisbane unfortunately, I live in Newcastle. My mums a breeder of large dogs and it isnt totally nessisary to wait till they are 12 months. Once the testicles have dropped then they can come off! Some people think it effects their personality if you do it too early, but i think there is nothing worse than a sexually frustrated, angry dog...especially when they are big!

If you ever feel like a trip to Newcastle then the place to go through is Hunter Animal watch. Its about $60 for a male to get desexed through them.

RIng around & get quotes for a fair price & i also suggest checking out your local RSPCA. They tend to charge less as they just want to make sure less puppies are around that wont get homes !
Ive only ever been quote around $100 for a male dog to be done, its usually females that cost a lot more upwards of $200 for obvious reasons !

Good luck !
