I'm sorry, I just need to get this out...

My mum just rang to tell me that my niece (6 week old) is in hospital. She was asleep in her cradle this morning and my sister walked past and thought she looked a bit strange, and found that she wasn't breathing... She did cpr, rang the ambulance and she started breathing again...

I'm in shock. I can't stop crying. My best friend lost her little girl to Sids a year and a half ago. I will never forget that phone call... This phone call could have been so different had she walked past 2 minutes later.

I'm waiting to hear from mum again to see what the Paeds say. Sarah has reflux and the ambulance man said that could have blocked her windpipe? Or of course it could have been sids :(

My poor sister is in shock, Sarah's already been in hospital this week with allergy problems - they think she's allergic to cow protein, so has been pooing for 3 weeks because no one would take my sister seriously. Poor little bubba, what a first 6 weeks of life.

VENT - the ambulance didn't even come over to check her - my sister rang mum who told her to get Sarah checked out - so she rang the ambulance back and spoke to another man. He said they would be over pronto, and the first guy should have sent one over!! And there could be a problem that caused it and it could happen again, so they would take her to hospital just to make sure...

In reply to Lunar's thread - I am sooo soooo thankful my sister walked past when she did.

About the reflux - that happened to Liam when he was 5 days old. We were going to a health centre, parked, when to get him out of the car seat and he was blue and not breathing. The ambulance was there within 2 minutes and he took about 10 minutes to recover, and the doctors said it was reflux.

How scary for your sister and your family. I'm glad she's admitted to hospital now and in good hands. Poor little thing, she's not had a very good start by the sounds of it :hugs:.

I hope everything works out ok. :hugs:

Update is they are monitoring her for a couple of hours (not that the hospital wanted to - my BIL kicked up a stink) and she should be home @ 8. The gp there told them to monitor her themselves . She stopped breathing FFS.

Anyway, thanks you all for your thoughts and well wishes.

Can I just ask - did it happen again? Was there anything you had to do (or could do) so it didn't happen again?

TIA

When my ds was born he had a lot of mucous on his lungs so we he was about a day old he was chocking on it and was finding it hard to breath i swear he stopped breathing for a few seconds he went blue and i ran him up to the nursery and the nurse turned him on his tummy and helped him bring all it up,he was ok after that but i was so scared lucky my mil was their at the time cause i didnt know what to do,i just froze,it also happend when dd passed out,i just froze and had to get df to take her and i called the ambos.I would be alot better now though,i have been in a few situations like that and have learnt what to do.

Thank god that your sister walked passed when she did and that she acted quickly, your sister saved her daughters life now thats something to be proud of.

My friends ds also passed away from sids and ever since then i have always been on edge, your sister will need alot of support its really hard thing to go through.

Same thing happened to my DD when she was 12 weeks old. She has since been diagnosed with reflux. The only reason we knew (it was 3am) is because we have an apnoea monitor (Angelcare brand). We got it before we had her, and only because my bro's friends' 2 year old died of SIDS not long before I found out I was pregnant, so I was paranoid!!!

Took her to emergency, they checked her out, and sent us home - didn't even monitor her!!! She is now 5 months and it hasn't happened again, thank God. But I didn't sleep much after that, and I still always check on her when she's sleeping, even with the monitor!

I am glad your niece is OK - it would have been so scary.

A similar thing happened to a friends bub - but they didn't have to do CPR - but she had stopped breathing. They were on holidays and the Dr they seen said everything seemed OK the next day, but to speak to their GP when they got home. They ended up with a referral to a paed at the local hospital & a few weeks later had a 'sleep study' done at the hospital. The bubs had sleep apnoea, so before they left the hospy that day they had to do a refresher on infant CPR and a movement moniter was organised. Thank god she never had another episode and subsequent studies have shown that her although she still stops breathing in her sleep it is no longer at a life threatening level (still scary though). A viligant paed & the cot monitor have saved them much worry - so if your sis is still concerned - try for a referral to a paed to get more advice.

Update - it happened again yesterday - this time she was already in hospital as she has started pooing blood. Am waiting on a call from my sister to let me know how the x-ray went (Sarah had to drink dye???). They think she may have a twisted bowel?

kelli, our thoughts are with you and your sister's family. what a horrible, worrying thing to go through with a brand new bub.

:fingerscrossed: everything is ok.

i think it's a good idea for every parent to know cpr - dh and i want to do a course, just a matter of doing it. after hearing about this, i will get my butt into gear.

thank god your sister knew what to do at the time - angels are obviously looking out for her family!
