View Full Version : Delayed cord cutting to get benefit of cord blood?

I came across this which I thought was interesting

(which was listed amongst reasons to delay cord clamping/cutting)

5. It is interesting that scientists are now discovering that umbilical cord blood is full of valuable T-cells that have cancer fighting properties. A whole industry has sprung up to have this precious blood extracted from the placenta, put in a cooler with dry ice, and taken to a special storage facility to be ready in case the child gets cancer at some time in the future. This is human insanity of the first order. That blood is designed by nature to go into that child's body at birth, not 30 years later!

 We let the cord stop pulsing before cutting. If I'm lucky enough to have a third baby, I'll be having a Lotus Birth

Yes I want to wait for it to stop pulsating too after learning how healthy it is in those last few minutes.

Queen, what is a lotus birth?

lotus birth is when you dont cut the cord and the cord and placenta stays intact until the cord falls of naturally.. the placenta is wrapped up and i think its salted?? or somthing similar to help dry it out and avoid smells.. etc...

Thats a pretty lame explanation but you get the idea... ;)

Lotus birth link
http://www.pregnancy.com.au/lotus_birth_a_ritual_for_our_times.htm

We have left the cord pulsating for 20 minutes...no point in taking all that goodness away when baby need it the most...so many reasons to allow baby to receive it straight away.

We delayed the clamping as well. Actually they asked if I wanted to, which I did but hadn't told them yet.

I think by this time they had figured me out so they put two and two together and thought "hippie" LOL.

No Lotus birth for me though. Once its all over the placenta has done its job for me so its bye bye.

I'll be waiting for the cord to stop pulsing for the next one

I might even look into the lotus birth :detective:

We waited for the cord to stop pulsating until it was cut, luckily in the BC I gave birth in it was standard practice.

We delayed clamping and bub was very pink and healthy looking for a few days, which is not something we noticed with our other 2, who had their cords cut early.
There's a lot of blood left in there otherwise, I forget how much but it's well worth doing.... please correct me if i'm wrong, I think it's something like a tenth of their overall amount of blood

Wow this is very new and interesting to me.
I was reading about it and the blood and nutrients are beneficial esp if baby has birth injuries. There is still oxygen in there.
Tbh I feel upset that I never knew about this til now. I am not sure about a lotus birth for next bub. Still trying to convince hubby that we should have a home/water birth. But definitely going to avoid anyone and anything touching baby for at least for the first hour or so. (eta other than us of course ;))

researched this a few months ago, wish i had of known all that info when having DD. But will be delaying cord clamping and cutting until cord has stopped pulsating for this bub. Not keen on the idea of lotus birth, but each to their own! Like Stellarella will be having bub at BC so it's standard practice.

I will not allow any of my babies cords to be cut until after the placenta has been birthed, by that time, it has usually well and truly stopped pulsing.

Something to be aware of, even if it appears to have stopped pulsing to the naked eye, it can still be delivering blood right inside the cord, which is unable to be detected. So it is prudent to give it at least 1/2 an hour to an hour, just to make sure it has properly completed the biological function it was created for.

And yes, I am pretty sure it is around 10% of the baby's blood volume that is pumped in after they are born, a huge amount to miss out on by any standards!

Babies whose cords are allowed to empty of blood naturally, are at very much lower risk of anaemia during their first year.

Okay I know that this may be a silly question, but is it possible to have as part of a birth plan (with a planned c/s) to have a delay in cutting the cord so the baby can get the benefit of the cord blood? All of the other posts seem to be talking about vaginal/lotus births. I can understand with an emergency c/s it may not be possible, but with an elective c/s you do this its possible?

I read you can have a lotus birth after a caesar - or wait to cut / clamp the cord. It may be more involved.

I was 100% for delayed clamping and natural third stage and the OBGYN completely disregarded my birth plan and very clear instruction and clamped the cord anyway. I then HAD to have the injection to expel the placents because it was still full of all of the blood my bub should have received.

Sorry to hear that.

What a sneaky and unpleasant thing to do. Disrespectful. Pretending to agree to the birth plan and then double crossing you (worse than if they had argued with you when they knew your birth plan).

Obs who behave like that don't deserve patients.

I wanted to do this, but because Ebony was born not responsive and breathing she had to be cut right away by the midwife and taken away.

DH asked (I actually forgot at the time), and we were allowed to wait, I birthed the placenta, and the midwife made sure it was all drained before it was clamped, I didnt get the injection either, didnt need it, I suppose it took about 20minutes all up.. I have photos of the cord, and it is WHITE when clamped, totally drained of all blood, I really appreciate her doing that for me!
