I got the request form for my GTT yesterday, but I am now left with some questions about it.
With my other pregnancies, I've never had to fast before having it done and I've also only had one lot of blood drawn. It has also only taken about 1/2hr-1hr to do.
Yet from what I've read on here......I should need to fast, I should have 2 lots of blood drawn and it should take a bit longer.
Has anyone else never had to fast and only had one lot of blood taken?
Yes that's the Glucose Control Test (GCT) and sometimes it's done before the GTT or not done at all.
My OB gave me this test and because I was borderline I had to do the GTT as well.

Oh okay, ta. That answers pretty much everything, lol.
When is the best time to have it done? I'm 25wks by my dates, but 23wks by scan dates?
It's usually done between 26-28 weeks from memory....

Thanks......might give it 2wks in case my scan dates are right and mine are wrong.

No probs!
Good luck with your test... mine is in just over 4 weeks :fingerscrossed:
i had to have mine 2 hour test just the other week. and i am only 15 weeks, but that could be because i already had GD in my last pregnancy.
maybe they think your at a higher risk which is why you're having the 2 hour test first, which is why they did it first for me. all up its actually 2 1/2 hrs afaik.
half hour you sit after you get there then they take your blood then you drink the yucky drink then wait another 2 hours.
take a good book or some magazines. and if you have any other kids, leave them at home because you cant get up to attend to them.

I'm not having the 2hr test though..........just seemed odd that other people have had to fast, have blood drawn twice etc and I never have before.
Fingers crossed I don't have to do a 2hr one, will be a nightmare trying to keep a 2yr old entertained for that long.

sorry i misunderstood. maybe things are done differently now to when you had to do these tests previously...
with my first pregnancy i had 2 bloods taken. when i initially went in i had it taken, drank the green stuff, sat around for an hour and had my blood taken again. no one ever said anything to me about fasting but i had it done in the morning and i was too nervous to eat anyway. i think that was called the GCT (glucose challenge test).
however, this time i only had to go in, drink the green stuff and sit for an hour and have just the one blood taken. i think thats the GTT (glucose tolearnce test). when i was talking to my OB, he said i should only have had the GTT done the first time too because the GCT is usually only offered to those who are thought of being at risk of GD. i was mad because that was really stressful for me. i didn't meet nay of the risk criteria and yet they made me do the full test :banghead:. i hate needles and i vomited so badly after, i think it was more stress than anything.
i would just say, make sure you are getting the right test done and that you're not getting blood taken unecessarily. if its just a routine thing, you should only have one set of bloods done.t hats what i was told anyway, unless of course you meet some of the criteria for GD.

Oh gosh would hate to wait 2 hrs!!!
1 hour is long enough for me!!
Hey guys.. i am actually a phlebotomist... ( fancy name for blood collector!!) And i do these test on pregnant ladies all the time...
The standard test is done at about 26 - 28 weeks, and you are give a glucose load of 50g some docttors request that you fast for this and some dont, this test is done to determine your glucose levels and how your body handles them.
If this reading comes back higher than normal, you will then be required to do a test that will take about two hours, for which you do have to fast for. you will be given a blood test when you first get tto the clinic, followed by that flat lemonade drink which has a 75g load of glucose in it. you will then be given a bloodtest after one hour and then 2 hours, then you can go eat. this test is a more acurate way of determining how your body deals with sugars etc. hopefully it reamins low and you can continue to eat lots of chocolate!!!:smiliedance:
just check that if you need to book in for it as well at the clinic.
when i had to do the 2 hr test, my doctor told me that i didnt need to book in just to show up on the day and they would do the test.
Turns out he was wrong, i showed up and the clinic told me that i was supposed to call and make an appointment to have the 2 hour test done. The one hour one they do without appointments. They bent the rules and fitted me in, but id give them a quick call to clarify if they havent told you already...
