I have insulin reliant gestational diabetes and as a result my obstetrician has said that I will be induced at 38 weeks because
a) GD babies are at risk of being bigger
b) GD babies have a greater still-born rate in the last two weeks of pregnancy for reasons unknown
I am a little anxious having read predominantly negative information regarding emergency caesarians and the fairly high odds that induced labour at 38 weeks will end in one. I have an appointment with my obstetrician tomorrow and will discuss it with him.

Am I being hasty contemplating an elective caesarian?
I feel guilty that this could end up being a very successful VB but am truly frightened at the trauma (to the baby and myself) of labouring unsuccessfully for hours and then having an emergency caesarian.

Any advice would be welcome

For my first pregnancy I also had insulin reliant G. Diabetes and was induced at 38 weeks, which ended after 24 hours in an emergency c/section with a really really bad recovery.......it was a pretty traumatic process.

After that bad experience, for my second pregnancy (on insulin with GD again).......I choose an elective ceaser this time and its been sooooooooooooooooo much better. My recovery has just been 100 time better and I felt so much more in control and my body was much less stressed (and so were bubs and I).

It is a really hard choice to make, I would much rather have had a "normal" vaginal birth first time round but it didn't happen (that doesn't mean it wouldn't for you though). However I didn't want to risk a repeat performance of the last time so I choose an elective. My OB also recommended an elective.

I wish you all the best and remember as long as you have a healthy baby it doesn't matter how they got here!!

Good luck with your decision. Do what feels right for you and your baby, no use doing something and feeling utterly terrifying yourself!!
