Hi all

My 3 mth old DD has an infection on her face and the doctor prescribed her with some antibiotics. After visiting a few pharmacies, I found out that the antibiotics has been discontinued but I managed to get hold of a last bottle. When I got home, I discovered that the bottle had an expiry date of 1/1/07. Naturally I was worred about that but I tried giving it to DD anyway and she threw up everywhere. That's when I called the doctor who said she wasn't aware of the antibiotics being discontinued and I asked if DD could go on antibiotics cream instead. After a couple of days of application, DD isn't getting better and she keeps rubbing her face at night and her eyes are all puffed up in the morning and her face has yellow crusts all over. I am seeing the doctor again today and I think I'm going to ask for a referral to a dermatologist. I'm very worried that the doctor will get DD on antibiotics again as DD just refused to take any (even though I tried mixing with breast milk / formula) and was very angry that she refused to eat for a while although she was hungry. I am so worried... is anyone else on medication other than antibiotics for infection? Or how do you give antibiotics to a bub who throws up everything when you try giving it to them? Is there anything else I can do? I can't get her to stop rubbing her face at night unless I get up every 2nd hour. I am just worried sick and don't know what to do.

Sorry this is a bit long but I needed to vent. Thanks

You poor thing and DD. How awful for you.

I would suggest waiting to see what your GP says and then if you aren't entirely happy, maybe ask for a referral to a dermatologist.

Just keep her fingernails short and maybe put mittens on her at night. Might help.

Can you wrap her at night so she doesnt rub her face?

I don't think the expirey date of the antibiotics would have mattered they are still ok to use.
perhaps she was alleric to other ingredients in them.

There are a ew different anibiotics like tetracyclin and Rulide and minomyacin for long term use (in adults I expect).

If you are in Sydney see a dermatologics called Dr. Joanne See at Bondi Junction. She also practices in the city on Mcquarie street.

Youmight also be able to do wet packs on her face.. get some gauze swabs10 x 10 cm .. or some tshirt material, wet them and put lots of hydraderm sorbolen and glycerine cream(not lotion) on her face.
Placethe material or gaze ontop for until theystart drying out.

Hope she gets through it.

You could may be ask about Bactraban.. its an antibiotic cream.. not sure if it is recommended for littlebabies but I put that on my skin when my excema was very bad and it helped.

Remember to keep away from steroids on the face.

Good luck!

You need to get back to the drs and get a different sort of antibiotic, the infection is inside her as well as on her skin, a cream alone is not enough, I would advise you go to a different gp who actually knows what he/she is on about.

DD's infection has gone now but I just want to share this with other mums giving bubs antibiotics. I went back to the dr who gave DD a different antibiotics. The dr prescribed a 125ml bottle and said I should give to DD over 10 days. But DD started to have diarrheoa on about the 6th day and I figured it was because of the antibiotics. I went to another dr who told me to immediately stop the antibiotics and DD had too much antibiotics. I did but DD had diarrheoa for a few days. She has recovered but I just wish the other dr had told me there could be side effects and I should watch out...

Anyway, just thought this could be helpful if you ever need to give bub antibiotics for infection.
