My DH and I have decided that we will circumsize our 12 mnth old and soon, however I have a querie for those who have already done it. Should I put his nappy on soon after the operation or will the doctor give me more information. He isn't toilet trained yet so I am worried he will pee everywhere.

The doctor will give you all the information you need. With our boys, they were done at 4 weeks, and we put vaseline & dressing on & then their nappy. At 12 months, it may be different, though.

Beware of meatal stenosis with regard to frequency of nappy changes. Once he's circumcised, his glans and urinary meatus (peehole) will no longer be protected by the foreskin and 10% of boys end up with ulceration and subsequent scarring that begins to block the flow of urine.

After circumcision, a child who is not toilet trained persistently exposes the meatus to urine, resulting in inflammation (ammoniacal dermatitis) and mechanical trauma as the meatus rubs against a wet diaper. This causes the loss of the delicate epithelial lining of the distal urethra. This loss may result in adherence of the epithelial lining at the ventral side, leaving a pinpoint orifice at the tip of the glans. Because this condition is exceedingly rare in children who are not circumcised, circumcision is believed to be the most important causative factor of meatal stenosis.

Just something to be aware of.

I'm sure you'll be provided with post-op instructions regarding diapering.

Boof came home with a dressing on his penis along with the plastibell i kept this on overnite but still applied plenty of vaseline to his nappy before bed.

The following day i had to bathe him 3 times a day anyways & i suggest this because it keeps away infections. I just made up salt water baths for him then used vaseline in a patch where his penis would rub on the nappy.

Your doctor will advise you what they suggest the above was what i was advised & i kept this up until the plastibell fell off which took 8 days for Boof. I then kept an eye on it all afterwards & have never had any dramas in regards to infections from the wound site or irritations etc.

Good luck.
