View Full Version : advice needed-cats and worming tablets
I recently got a kitten from the animal welfare league, she just turned 6 months.
Got her a worming tablet yesterday but it's huge.
My DP says just stick it down her throat but it would be like us trying to swallow a biscuit whole:eek:
It really needs to be broken in half 4 times but I don't think she will like having to swallow 4 bits.
And if I crush and mix it with food she probably just won't eat it.
Wish I had of got the paste now
Any one have any (helpfull) ideas?

maybe just break it a half, and do a bit at a time.
Oh and my vet told me, to clip a peg on the back of their neck to calm them while you are doing it, its like when they were a kitten and being picked up by their mothers, it really works and doesnt hurt them

Geez, I'd be too scared to stick my finger in a cats mouth, their teeth are so sharp, lol. Just wondering if it would be possible to dissolve it in a bit of kitten milk and give it to her that way? Just an itty bitty bit of milk so that you know she will drink the lot.
Use the Advantax brand flea stuff its also a wormer and its a drop on the back of the neck.... spendy but so much easier than giving a cat a pill !!!
Otherwise plenty of info on the net on how to give a cat a pill... but firstly clip its claws !!!

When I mixed the paste in my cats food he would eat the stuff that didn't have the paste on it, so I just put it on his paws now and he can't help but give himself a bath and lick it off.
If you do just put it down her throat though, wrap her in a towel first so she can't scratch.

We used to take our old cat to the vet for them to spend two seconds shoving it down her throat. The screaming and fighting in the cat cage in the car was so much easier than the screaming, fighting and blood it took to worm her.
We use Revolution now (drops on back of neck). Brilliant.
You can also buy a pill popper which is a long straw-like device that allows the tablet to go to the back of the throat so your fingers don't have to. Just rub under their chin/neck after the tablet goes in (on the third or fourth try:rolleyes: ) to ensure they swallow.

There are 'pill popper' things that you can get from most vets for a few bucks....they hold the tablet, and you put it to the back of their throat and push the plunger and it pops the pill in! No fingers getting bitten then!
I hate the paste, they always seem spit alot back up, and it gets everywhere....much easier to stick one tablet down their gob.
I use it all the time on one of my cats, it's really easy, but the other one's a bit of a feral and bites and scratches the popper....its a 2 man job to do her....:o:laughing:
have cat at waste height.... eg on a bench or table.
if you are right handed grab cat with left hand around head so that hand is on either side of its head at the back of the mouth....
tilt head back this automatically diables jaw (have the pill in right hand between thumb & pointer finger)...
and with right hand gently lower jaw down and pop pill in at back of throat.
Voile !
Goodluck ....
PS - neck drops are easier !!
I suggest you break the tablet in half and with your partners help, grab the cat by the back of the neck and shove the tablet in the back of the throat. It can get a bit messy but it's the only way to do it
I agree with Shazbutt, the paste can get everywhere but the cats mouth, tablets are the way to go
Thanks for all the great advice.
Lucky I just read the instructions on the pack as i only need to give her half :o
Well that may be easier only one bit to swallow......now to find her:laughing:
Next time I might just check out the advantix
The best you can do is get the gel that you run down their neck - all you do is part the hair so it has contact with the skin! Easy! But if you have to give a tablet - grab by the scruff of the neck (at the back) gently pull the skin back and hold on- this 'paralyses' them momentarily and also makes their mouth go slack, push your finger and the tablet down the top side of the tongue then cup your hand over their closed mouth - they reflex swallow and down goes the tablet!

Just stick the half near the back of her throat and hold her mouth shut, try and rub gently down her throat, it just helps...
You'll probaly need your partners help, when i help mum i wrap the cat in a towel hold her, stick the tablet in and hold her still while mum puts a little bit of water on her finger and puts it on her mouth. Tabitha doesnt mind doing it this way, if she wasnt in a towel id be in a bit of trouble  but its pretty quick and easy....
Good luck
Well I crushed the tablet and put it in a little milk as somone suggested...and she drank it all even chewed the bits that didn't dissolve properly.
What a good little kitty she is.
She has needed a bit of medical care since i got her and was getting a bit sick of me touching her so this method was great.
Thanks again gals

It was me who suggested that, glad it worked. Will have to try it myself next time I worm my kitty as I really don't like the paste he has now.
