View Full Version : It only takes a second

I had to rush Matthew up to the hospital 2hrs ago. He was having lasagne for dinner and I took it out of the microwave (the sauce was boiling) and I took my hand off the plate for literally half a second. He quickly reached up and grabbed it. I didn't even look to see where it landed on him, I just grabbed him and ran up to the bathroom as fast as I could, threw him in the bath and started running the hand held shower over him. I took his jammies off him (he had just got out of the bath 5mins earlier) and his chest was bright red and he had red blotches down his arm. He was screaming so bad, and here was me making him freeze to death with cold water. He stopped crying about 5mins later.
We did that for 25mins, then I threw him in the car and had him hold a wet nappy on his chest while I drove. They took a look at him and said he was the 3rd burns patient that night and that he didn't look too bad. They knew that we had run him under the water because of how he had gone from red to white.
So they gave him some pandol and put some cream and a dressing on a 50c piece sized burn on his chest. He has that one, one on his top lip, a small one on his stomach but the water helped the rest.
He got back in the car and he said "nice doctor", so he still has a sense of humour.
He can't go out in the sun for a couple of days, but he is doing good now. I feel so bad, I am always so careful about these things and I am shocked at how quick it can happen. I have to take the dressing off tomorrow. If it starts blistering, I have to take him back, fingers crossed it wont.

Great work on the quick thinking
Hope your DS feels better soon :hugs:
:hugs: to you and your little boy.
:fingerscrossed: that it doesn't blister, great thing you rushed him into the bath. You'd be suprised at how many people just sit and panick instead of doing something about the injury.
:yelclap: to your quick thinking!!
oh how scary!
I agree, good work on acting quickly. I tend to panic.
Glad he's ok :hugs:

Sorry to here about that, I hope you are both ok. :hugs: Hayley reached up on the bench before and touched the George Forman pan thingy which had just been used. Luckily she is ok now.

:hugs: its always a bit of a scare but you did well. im sure it wont blister tomorrow but :fingerscrossed: and im glad he's ok.
I remember when my oldest was little i used to boil his water put them in sipper cups and then put them in the fridge, well i did what i always did but i was at my mil and she was standing at the fridge for ages with the door wide open not long after i had put the sipper cups of water in there. so what happens my son snuck up under her and grabbed his cup and went to drink it, and was screaming. we through him in the bath and his chest was bright red but went away quickly i then rushed him to the drs worried he may have burnt his throat but he hadnt. i guess he spat it out quickly. I was so scared but he was fine once he got over the intial shock.

It was one of the scariest parenting moments I've ever had. I honestly thought he had got it all over his face. :crying: I didn't even look at him, I just grabbed him and ran him up to the bathroom.
He was lying in bed making car noises when we went to bed, so he must have been feeling okay. But I know that every time I closed my eyes, I could see him reaching up to grab the plate and then I could hear the scream again.
Hopefully his lip will be okay....he tried eating the cream that the nurse was putting on it last night so she didn't get that much on there and it looked a bit swollen later. But his chest worries me the most. :(

He is up now, not complaining about being sore or anything which is promising. But his lip has a raised white spot on it with a red centre....not sure if that's a bad thing or not, anyone know??
I have to see my GP on Wednesday, so I will ask her to quickly check him out for me and make sure he is healing okay.
I tend to panic in situations like that too. Well done on the quick thinking:thumbsup:
Im glad he is okay now. Lots of :hugs: for you. That must have been the fright of your life!

Thanks :)
He has been lying on the floor all morning watching DVD's. So unlike him. :( He usually gets 12hrs sleep each night but because of what happened he only got about 9.
Going to take the dressing off this afternoon, hopefully it will look ok.

:hugs: to you, it's soo scary isn't it?
Good on you for acting so quickly and putting him in the bath  .
Im glad to hear he seams to be okay today.
I had a similar incident witn my dd when she was about 22 months old.
I had made soup for dinner, put hers in her bowl and put it on the bench to cool, i turned around to ask dh something, then heard Tahlia screaming, turned around and she a just got a finger onto the bowl and tipped it all over her. We too ripped her clothes and put her in the shower, then rushed her to hospital with a wet cloth ion her face. She ended up with a burns dressing on her eye (luckily she closed her eye and it was just the outside) and some on her chest and arm(they didn't need dressings).
So anyway my point is i know exactly how scary it is and horrible you feel (cos i know i did).

glad to hear he is ok today and how well you managed it..
I'm one to panic in these kind of situations but its only because of DH's clear mind in times of stress that I'm getting better...
Getting to that cold shower makes a world of difference to the burn...I've heard creams with manuka honey in it are good for burn healing too or aloe vera from the garden.

He has been sleeping for the last hour. DH called earlier to check on us both (as we are both injured atm, lol) and he said that it's a good thing it happened when he was this young (though not at all would be preferrable) because little kids heal so much better physically and emotionally.
He checked out his dressing in the mirror before and thought it was so cool. Usually he will run a mile at athe sight of a bandaid so I was worried about him keeping this on, but he is doing great.
glad hes ok now :) my dd has a facination with bandaids ' my knee is sore better put a bandaid on it'

He jammed his finger in one of those bulldozer things at the park 3mths ago. He screamed louder when I brought out the bandaid than he did when he jammed it. I had to put it on him when he was sleeping, but even then he was fighting it, lol.
