View Full Version : Warning.......... Warning.......
This mornig my Ds1 and Ds2 were plying with those glo sticks. You know the ones where you snap them and then they glo in the dark?
Well one snapped in half and the chemical flew out into DS1's eyes.
He was screaming and crying and yelling, he couldnt see.
I threw him straight in the shower to flush his eyes and called an ambulance. His screaming was so bad my neighbours all came to see what was happening.
Anyway, after a little while at the hospy- he can see and isnt in much pain now we are home.
The hospy rang th poisons info line and they said that these things are not toxic.
Well, they ARE!!! Its just that as the chemical is not alkaline based the company doesnt have to list it as toxic as while it wont hurt you if you swallow it, it CAN make you blind if it goes in your eyes:thumbsdown:.
DS1 was extremely lucky that i got him straight in the shower to flush them out. The ambos said he is extremely lucky to have his sight.
PLEASE be carefull when your kids have theses things. Personally there will never ever be another glo stick in my house.
well. ya no these never used to be avail to the public. personally I would never give them to my kids. they are chemicals after all and are not super hard to break.
hope your son is alright and I hope this thread makes people keep a closer eye on what they give their kids to play with unsupervised.
sorry to hear about your DS1, glad to hear that he's alright
That is the whole reason why I don't like any kids playing with them, I have heard of some kids going blind or partially blind after getting that stuff in their eyes

I remember the same thing happening to a friend and I once. We broke 'em and was having fun splattering the glow all around in the dark at a disco until it got into our eyes. We had to go to the ambos to get our eyes flushed and yes they hurt like all hell. We had no idea they were dangerous, but I can tell ya now, there is no way my kids will be playing with them.
thanks for the warning.. sorry about your son.. glad hes ok :hugs:

OMG  So glad your boy is ok!! I've seen them get holes in them before when friends kids or my niece have been playing with them, but I'd read the label and knew they weren't toxic, so didn't worry about it.
Thankyou so much for letting us know! I won't be giving them to any kids anymore!

Its not just when they aren't supervised. The kids were less than 2 metres away from me. I was washing up and they were playing on the kitchen floor.
I do fell terribly guilty for it and dont know how i would ever forgive myself if it had of been worse.

I didnt mean you. accidents can happen even when you have your eyes on them like a hawk. dont feel guilty these things happen. you did well to act so quick I would have panicked

I might have acted quick but i panicked too!!:o My DH didnt know what was happening when i called him at work in hysterics- he just left and came home without knowing any details-poor man.
I know there was no nastiness in your thread- i wasnt quoting for that reason mate.
thats cool I just didnt want you to think I was being a cow:o
ohhhh i/we love those things
we held a school disco in sept and all the kids got one as they entered! we had snapped them all before hand, and i remember going home covered in glow stuff cause alot of them broke when we were prepearing them! we had to do about 300 or more
its scary to think i had it all over me litterally i was glowing like you wouldnt believe, and i do remember getting some flicked onto my face/mouth YUK but thankfully I didnt get it in my eyes
i cant say id never give them to my kids again cause they absoulutely love them, but i will def be inspecting every one they do get after reading this !!!
Wow Tanya that is so scarey!!!!!
Isn't it wonderful how quickly you did the right thing so quickly. I have a fear that if something terrible like this happens I will get all flustered and make everything worse. Thankfully I have never had to deal with any major incidents with my boys yet.

How scary for you, I'm glad cooper is okay. Also the liquid in the also corrodes furniture polish/varnish. My neices broke one on my coffee table and where it spilt the table is now back to bare timber.
