Id say its much better go just advertise yourself. There are so many extra costs if you go through an agency but then in the end they do all the screening of the nannies for you. Also a great website for it is www.findababysitter.com.au (http://www.findababysitter.com.au) :)

Screening is normally just the police check and workign with children check. Normally nannies don't do them themselves they are done through the agency im not even sure how to do it myself?

I guess what's very very important is references, make sure they have at least three recent contactable references. You can find out a lot through them and why they left that job and if it ended on good circirmstances.

Also some good questions to ask while you're interviewing them are
"What form of disipline do you use?"
"Have you ever had a major problem with a previous employer?"
"What do you like to do with the children?" "How would you describe yourself?"
"If my eldest son was due for a nap but didnt want to go down how would you handle it"
"What do you do with an overtired baby?"
"Do you understand the nutritional requirements for the ages of my children?"
"Have you ever been in an emergency situation and how did you handle it?"

Sorry im blabbering now but its interesting some questions my agency asked me before employing me were very good and gave a lot of extra info!
