Hi all, i know this is a bit of a strange question, but my dp is convinced our cat Coco is pregnant, she is 11 months old and her tummy does stick out and her teats have grow really big! I know it sounds like she pregnant but ive never dealt with this before and i thought maybe it was just her age and she was "filling" out! My dp ask me if i could get a hpt and wait for the cat to pee and see if two blue lines came up! I couldnt stop laughting when he said that! Any advise would be appreciated.

When i've had cats, the big nipples have been the first clue! Just feel around in her belly, you'll be able to feel them! As her tummy grows you can massage her belly and feel them kick! :D

Sounds preg to me. Take her to the vet and get her checked out. The vet can normally feel around and tell you.

By the time it gets to that stage, birth isn't far away considering they are only pregnant for something like 9 weeks. I walked into my bedroom one day and wooolaaaaaaaaaa kittens....5 of them! I think we only sussed out the week before

Wow! You're going to be a grandma! ;)

Sounds pretty convincing to me!

Cats are pretty good when it comes to nesting and birthing though. She will find a quiet, comfy and dark spot somewhere and when its time she will take herself off and give birth a few times!

My one of my cats many years ago chose to give birth in my built in wardrobe  then she popped out a couple, cleaned them and then left the room and i watched her run across the street! I thought she'd gone to let the father know! Anyways, 1/2 hour later she comes back and has two more! So, we had 4 gorgeous kittens!

Where she has them will be there home for a week or so, after that you could move them to something more suitable if need be. It is important though not to touch the kittens while really new as i've heard it can throw the mum off with your scent and she might not recognise her own kitten.

All up though its a pretty painless task (for us!) and your cat will do whatever is needed for herself.

If she's popped - it wont be long now!

Keep us in the loop!

sounds like your cat is pregnant to me...
When molly was pregnant i didnt really notice i thought that she was just "filling" out also as she has always been really tiny then one day my husband walked into our spare room and heard some scratching inside my BRAND NEW WEDDING DRESS BOX! she had climbed on in there and gave birth....  Cant say i left them in there for a week or even 2 minutes!
I screamed and screamed and screamed and cried... this was all 12weeks before my wedding and I had only just picked up dress and i had waited 10mths for it and paid over $3000 needless to say it was an oct long weekend and no dry cleaners were open!!!!!

Anyway the kittens were cute but i couldnt really look at them because i was too upset! we had her desexed not long after that...

Oh Brooke - how unusually awful!

Yeah i laugh about it now but not at the time... I shouldnt have been suprised as i seem to have this type of luck!

I would have found it more funny if it want me... I have a weird sense of humour as well... cant help but laugh at other peoples mis fortunes or sometimes my own...

[QUOTE=lucky*me]Wow! You're going to be a grandma! ;)

Hey i never thought of it that way :)

Brooke- arhhhhh your wedding dress! I hope it all worked out in the end, especially since no dry cleaners were open DOH!

Well i guess i had better prepare myself, i just thought she was too young to have a litter yet, obviously im very wrong, i just hope she has them in a nice safe spot ( if i had a wedding dress i would be hiding it) i just hope she does have too many  . Do i have to blow on there face when there are born to make sure they are breathing? Im a little stressed out! At least my cat does all the hard work, ill just be her support team :D Ill keep you all posted on the birth, well not in details but of how many were delived! Thanks all sooooo much you just save me a vet bill!

I advise you not to watch after she gives birth to each kitten, as the mother EATS THE AFTERBIRTH!! Gross.....

You don't have to blow on their little faces, but do make sure they are breathing after mum cleans the mucus way. I was a midwife for both of my cats when they had their babies...one tried to have them on my bed, lucky i caught her in time!, and the second had them under our recliner! They are sooo cute when they're born...so little!

Sounds like she may not have too long to go now, Good Luck!!

It is exciting to see little kittens be born but please please please have her desexed as soon as her kittens are old enough . There are too many unwanted kittens and cats around now. I know I sound like the party pooper but volunteering at the rspca has made me very tough on this subject

Have you thought about de-sexing kitty after this is all over with?
Unless she's a pedegree and you show or breed from her...there's a lot of kitty's on death row at the RSPCA.

Yes everything worked out all ok in the end with the wedding dress thanks to my mum who saved the say by putting the dress in the bath and slowly cleaning it for hours! Gotta love my mum sometimes!

I would agree with the desexing... not only becaus of the un wanted kittens but also because it stops other male cats fighting and harrassing your poor cat!
We hadnt had her desexed before because she was an inside cat and I dont remember ever getting out but i guess she did! Now she can be outside all the time and I dont have to stress! and no mean male cats trying to harrass her!

From what I remeber with all our cats I think they become sexually mature from about 6 - 9 months? does that sound right anyone?

I know teh RSPCA used to leave the desexing op till the cats were 6months to let their little bodies mature but now they just doit whenever they get them.

Yeah Monica...that sounds right to me...mine got preggers right on 9 months!

I was allowed to get my kittens desexed at 4 1/2 months because the male kitten was already trying to get to the female kitten!! Randy little thing! I think that's about the earliest you are allowed to, but generally as long as the male's little nuts have come through...

I wonder how come we are supposed to wait to get them done, while the RSPCA does them at like 6-8 weeks when they get kittens in? And how dear is it???? God...its like $160 out here to get a female done and an hour away its only $99 for a female and $50 for a male! I travel the hour just to save money....

I got my male cat done at 4 months, but he was a very big and strong boy and I worked at the vet where he was done. Usually you can get them done from 5 months.
The RSPCA does them at 1kg (I think) because they need to do them asap so they can sell them. But they ethically need to desex them before selling them, other wise it will just be a big cycle and they will get the kittens from that kitten one day!
They put down so many cats each year, that for them it is worth the risk of a couple dying from aneasthetic death, to ensure hundreds more kittens are not born from the one they have in their care.
Regular vets will, under normal circumstances, not desex before 5 months as there is that higher rate of anaesthetic death for younger animals. But the cats don't normally reach sexual maturity before 6 months.
Does that make sense?? I'm confusing myself now. :)

While the cost may seem alot...think about the grief you have to go through each time with each litter. Advertising the kitties....finding homes....making calls...hassle, hassle, hassle.
I had my male mouse 'done' and don't ask what it cost. But 2 years later I didn't have the exhaustion and pain of having to find something to do with litters every 5 weeks. So easy!

I'm in no way whingeing about the cost of having it done...i know it has to be done, but was just commenting on how much it differs from place to place....I hate the ordeal of having to find homes for kittens, and ended up having to keep an extra one myself as i couldn't find a home, and couldn't bear to have to get it destroyed....

Sorry Shannon I hope you dont think I was suggesting you were whingeing about the cost of desexing....I know its expensive..I wish it was free as more people would do it then.

Ive definately learn my lesson on getting my cat steralised, i will be getting her done and the kittens, i could even think about selling the kittens with out them being done as that is just plain cruel, i rang the cat haven this morning and the lady on the phone said she will give me a discount if i get them all done together and she said she was pleased that i was thinking ahead before the kittens were born, she said female kitten can have a litter as early as 6 months old and the kittens can be de-sexed as of 12 weeks old! Thanks ladies as the info you all gave me made me call the cat haven and inqiure.

O's mom - Thats ok...i just reread my post and realised it sounded as though i was having a go at you for having a go at me (which i know you weren't, i just worded my reply wrong)!!

There's a place where my freind took her cat to be desexed in Caboolture,Qld, which offers discounts if you have a health care card.....she got her mum to take her cat in as she didn't have a card...Now thats a good idea though free would be even better!

Firstbub - Make sure you don't look and DON"T LISTEN either, cos thats the worst bit...its the SOUND of her eating it thats worse....alll grissly....Anyhow, its only after she's had the kitten, i didn't mind watching while she actually HAD it.....Hope i didn't just gross you out too much!! :o

P.s Lets hope she doesn't have, like, seven kittens for you to get desexed!! Mine had 7 in her first litter! (though only 5 survived)

Its cool Shannon.
Firstbub: What agreat idea!!! I love the fact they discount for the members of the public that can't afford the op.
Free still would be better...but cheap is good too!

Hi all, thought i would give you all an update on my pregnant cat, well she delivered today  ON MY BED!!!! Lucky my 20 year old nephew was with me so we totally covered the bed with towels and after 10 minute she had her first kitten a boy (Nemo) 10 minutes later she had a girl (Chloe) and 45 minutes later she had another boy (Rex)!! My dp is not going to be happy when he finds out that that Coco delivered on our bed!! I cant blame him! My nephew and i had gloves on to assist if we had to ( he also recorded the birth), I glad there is only 3 of them(so far). I sure i have some sleepless nights ahead! I already have them booked in for 8 weeks to be steralised, and because there is only 3 (well 4 including Coco, they quoted me $70.00 for males and $80.00 for females, but she`s going to get back to me on a reduced price, but no matter the price it is my responsibility and at least i will know when i give them away that ive done the right thing. Thanks all for your advise as it helped me soooo much and i did gag a few times when i saw glimses of Coco eating her afterbirth  i havent eaten all day!!
