View Full Version : Mothers Milk for sale
Just wondering if anyone knows of someone who has sold their breast milk for any reason?
It's common practice in other countries - I've even seen it on supermarkets shelves in Finland!
I've read a lot on the internet about the pros (and cons) of sharing breast milk and am interested in hearing from people who have done it.
I know there are donation clinics where milk is pasteurised and frozen, but does anyone have experience with private exchanges?
Thanks :)

Hmmm,... I haven;t heard of people selling their milk,.. I know of people donating excess milk to premmie babies, orphans and babies born with addictions,....but selling it? A friend of mine was a wetnurse when her sister couldn;t breastfeed,.which is interesting,...
I would be all for donating excess milk,.....but would feel a little guilty about selling it,.I think.
I would be interested to learn more about this though!

I wouldn't feel comfortable with selling my milk. I'd be fine about donating it though. Strange, hey?! Although, I guess with selling it, it actually places a value on it, iykwim.
I probably wouldn't sell it either. I am currently trying to build up stocks in the freezer to mix with bubby's farex or whatever and also in case I get hit by a bus (and also, heaven forbid if I want to leave the flippin house without him one day!).
To be honest I LOATHE expressing, its so boring. So I would actually prefer that if someone wants their baby to have my breastmilk they are more than welcome to it for free but I would really rather they just come round and I will throw bubby on the boob.:p
I wanted to donate but I couldn't find a milkbank in Sydney only in brissy. I wouldn't sell it seems a little weird lol

I'm hearin' ya sista! I am cr@p at expressing, I can never get much out. I think because I don't really try that hard, I get bored and distracted by other more interesting stuff.

Once again, as usual, I agree totally with Shed :)
I've tried to register as a donor at the Gold Coast Milk Bank but this is the email I got back...
We appreciate your support and at this time the bank is operating one day a week until we have secured more funding.
At this time we are only able to pasteurise the milk from the present donors. There are health professionals in Melbourne, Sydney and the ACT who are interested in setting up a mothers milk bank in these states.
There is a submission with the Federal Government asking for financial support and we are hoping Rotary will become a mothers milk bank supporter.
Please contact your local Rotary division director and ask them to lend their support to this project.
Rotary in WA gave $500,000 to help set up their milkbank.
Hopefully they will get the desperately needed funding and can start helping all those sick babies out there who would thrive on our precious supply :fingerscrossed:
I've been speaking to Mothers Milk Bank and we hope to be including a lot more information about this on the Bub Hub shortly.

I wanted to donate my milk but received an email saying there was nomone to collect it at the moment - shame really as I have at least 200mls of milk I throw down the sink each day.
I know most wouldn't sell by what I've read here, but being someone who has failed to b/feed 4 times because I can't get enough supply after 6/8 weeks, I'd be more than happy to be able to buy breastmilk rather than formula

Oscars mum- WOW thats alot of milk to be just pouring down the sink, its such a shame as there is so many premmie bubs that could benefit from that. Have you thought of freezing some to use in bubbas food or just to drink? Silly me you probably have but by the end of 1 month your freezer would be overloaded with the stuff!!
I hate hearing of wasted breastmilk its like gold.

I have some frozen but yeah there is only so much room in a freezer. lol I have even resorted to chucking it in a bucket of water and soaking my feet in it at night as I too really hate to see it wasted;)

Your feet must be smooth as a babys bottom then! I had heaps with DD1 and I froze it and ended up with alot so stopped. Thats just awesome though to get 200mls extra a day.

This may seem like an odd request but I am here to ask where I can find information on places that collect donations of Breastmilk to be used for Cancer treatment. Recently my father was told he had cancer in the Liver. After reading many articles and much research on the benefits of Breastmilk being used as treatment for Cancer patients, we are now trying to find a Milk Bank or people that would donate or sell their Breastmilk. Breastmilk contains a protein that causes cell death in malignant tumours. I'd appreciate any information you have on any milk banks in the Sydney / NSW area.

My 12mo DD has stopped nursing and I am unable to express for her. I would have loved to have been able to buy BM for her rather then resorting to CIAC or cows milk etc
If there was an opportunity to sell my milk I might take it up, I'm not adverse to it (we're not financially stable enough for me to be adverse ). I have donated my milk and it was hard work, but rewarding. I wrote about my donation story here: http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=232998

My baby is 7 weeks old, but he spent his first 2 weeks in hospital. I was expressing during that time and now i have enough to feed 2 bubs!
My boobs leak all the time and get so sored that i still have to express at least once a day and my freezer is full!
I'd love to donate/sell it but hospitals won't take it and there is no milkbank in Brisbane!!!
So sad to see all that milk going down the sink!
natalia - if you have facebook, look into 'eats on feets' (plus which australian state you live in).
or go here (https://docs4.google.com/document/d/1f_mTdxsemycmybLFUiwSTQK2Um4rbjl20b_N13pTuPI/edit?hl=en#) and it has links to all the different states.
there's quite a few pages dedicated to mother to mother milk sharing (so donating or wetnursing) but obviously no monetary exchange - if that's something you're seriously considering - its definitely a massive gift to a lot of mums

Hi there!
I live in Brisbane, QLD and I'm serious about it.
Thank for the info - just add them on facebook.
My bub had to be feed with a central line while he was in the Hospital, and then we had to go through the process of giving him just tiny bits of milk until we were sure he tolerates it.
Seeing all those premmies and sick babies in need for milk, with mums not able to provide it and yet no chance to get it from the hospital was so sad! I asked a couple of nurses but they all pointed me to only the GC milk bank.
If i had to I think i'll buy BM instead of formula.
yeah there isn't a whole lot of support for milk banks yet. its why i think its such a positive step to see mum to mum milk sharing.
but i'm quite biased - a lot of my friends have wetnursed each others babies, so i think its kinda normal to see.
good luck
oh, so going to have to check out that facebook link tomorrow and share it!
