View Full Version : Pull-ups?

Just wanting some advice on the use of pull-ups.

DD (3yrs) thinks they are a great idea - as fancy nappies :(

Any ideas on how to convince her to use them as they are intended to be used.

I thought maybe I could put undies on her and then the pull-ups just to catch any accidents (floorboards in house have cracks so don't want urine to soak into them and make house smell) as she loves to wear undies over her proper nappies.

She tells me when she does wees and poos in her nappy

Daycare have no problems with her - she goes to the toilet there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Potty Training is such a tricky thing! As a past nanny i have tried all sorts of methods but i have to say that pull ups never work, they feel just like a nappy to the child and if your daughter uses a nappy happily then a pull up wont change that! Sorry they are a bit of a pet hate with me, im sure they work for some but never for me!!
My advice is to ask the daycare what routine they use, does she wear real underwear there? or do they routinely put them on the toilet? you may find that if you choose a couple of days when you are at home all day then bite the bullet put on the real jocks and either put a potty in the same room or put her on the pot every 30-45 mins it may work, it sounds as if she is really very close already, if you think she might have a few accidents, wait for good weather and try it outside, but in my experience, real underwear is the key as they learn how wet jocks feel and it encourages them to take control!!
I wish you lots of luck!

I must agree, I don't like pull ups either, the only time I would ever use them was if I was travelling more for the convinence of accidents. I found that by using regular underwear they learn quickly as they do get wet or dirty and they can feel it and many children don't like that feeling. I would suggest putting your daughter on the toilet every 45-60 minutes and praise her efforts when she does do something and say great trying if she doesn't. It just takes lots of time and patience and she will get there - good luck and hope with the warmer weather approaching that it will make it that little bit easier :)

i agree with mumof2girls, the pull up can be handy for when you are out, but undies are the way to go at home, they dont like the feeling of being wet so are more likely to use the potty or toilet with just undies on, summer is the only way to go for toilet training i think, they can run free or in as little clothing as pos, which makes it much easier to get them on the toilet quickly!

Thanks girls for your advice.

You are all right - now the warmer weather is approaching I will try to train her better.

I'm just scared she will still be in nappies when she goes to school (unfortunatly my nephew was still in nappies for the first couple of months of kindergarten (prep in victoria) and he was 5!

The joys of parenthood!

Hugs to everyone

I know I am replying late, but my daughter (almost 14 months) has been wearing "training pants" for the past week, and she is now recognising that she is wet or going to wet, and running to her potty. She doesnt know what to do with the potty yet, but the training pants have taught her this already. They (unsure if you know) are just foam lined knickers with either a terry towelling or pvc outer, so the child can feel they are wet, but either all or most of the urine is kept in the panties. You can just buy them at kmart etc. They arent "pretty" like pull ups, but im sure with some fabric paint you could make them pretty, and they are a lot cheaper than nappies!!!

Thanks for that - one silly question though - are they washable and how much in one packet?

I bought a whole heap of them just yesterday lol as we started TT DS today YAH!

I got mine from Kmart too and they were $2 each(as they had 15% off store wide sale on) I bought 10 and they are fully washable. There called Fluffies terry towelling/foam lined training pants.

DS had two accidents in them today and none went through the cloth lining :)

Ds also did a poo and two wees in his potty!!!!! Yeah Im so thrilled.

Gotta love 15% off!!

The terry towelling ones sometimes do let a bit through, nothing I personally would worry about, around the house, but the pvc ones are around the same price too.

oh yeah I bought wo pairs of those too, there by fluffies too and are called Cotton/polyester/pvc training pants. Havent tried them yet though.

Mum-2-2 I notice your bub is young too (to be starting TT) as my boy is almost 16 months but has been giving me signs that his ready for about 2 months now.
He points to his nappy and says "poo poo" for both no1 and no2 then goes to his room, squatts and does it in his nappy. Did your daughter give you similar signs to let you know she was ready? just curious :)

We got absolutely nowhere using pullups.

As far as DD was concerned, it was just a disposable nappy.

Once I gave up on them, and bought cheap and nasty little briefs from Big W (which cost less per pair than Pullups), we made serious progress very quickly. The Big W briefs were under $1 per pair, making them cheaper than Pullups, and therefore just as disposable especially if we were out and there was a nasty accident.

I kept the Pullups just for use in the car on a long trip if there was a danger of her falling asleep en route.

I ended up running down to kmart tonight and bought 6 (hope that will be enough to start with??)

I can't believe two of the children mentioned above posts are starting tt at 16mths. My dd is 3 and still not tt! I wish my dd was like your children -but I know I shouldn't be comparing.

I'll start the pants tommorrow and let you know how we go.

We have tried EVERYTHING so hopefully this will work!

If not back to the drawing board I guess.

Don't feel bad - my DD1 is almost 3 and is still in nappies. I have been trying pull ups too with no success (sucked in by the marketing again!) and will be buying training pants in the next week or so. So you are not alone!

Don't panic my DS is 4 in Feb and still trying to gain the knowledge needed to BOTHER going to the toilet but that is a different story.

I also find that using the training pants is great with my daughter and I use the plastic/pvc nappy covers from woolies, Pilchers we had growing up (at least I did) when I go out anywhere ... this way she still has "undies" on but no leaking.

I find much more than the inconvienience of my children believing they are still in nappies using pull ups ... I have a BIG problem with the PRICE of them. There is a bigger pack available in Aldi BUT my children being small don't fit them.

TT is something you do when your child is ready and has little to do with a childs age and more to do with their readiness.

I dont know if DS will be successful in tt at this stage but like I said in my previous post he has been showing signs for a while that he is ready to learn, so what else can I do but follow his lead. That said it frightens the s*** out of me! LOL :D

I think I am more ready for her to be toilet trained than she is!!

No, seriously, I have no idea of how I am going to do it (train her) so I thought that if I get her to recognise that she has wet herself, and take her to the potty (even tho she has already done it) she might realise that wet goes in potty, then pretty soon she will realise that she is going to wet herself and do it in the potty??!

I honestly have no idea how it is going to work, as she doesnt even know what poo and wee are yet, but Im in no hurry, I figure as long as she is trained by her teenage years ;) I cant have done too bad a job... and in the meanwhile, whilst she is wearing the panties instead of a nappy, it saves us money :D

As for everyone who cant believe the 16 month thing... like I say, I dont really hold much hope for her to be fully trained, but its a starting point for a clueless mum!!!!

Don't feel that it can't be done when the children are young though .... I was fully trained and in undies by the time I was 11 mths old. My friend was 10mths, my brothers were 11 and 12 mths. It can be done. Although I think it would now be called toilet timing, not training, but still it worked .... not for me though!!!

(the idea of toilet Timing is in Toddler Taming if anyone is interested in the difference)

Hey :)
((hugs))

dont get too stressed hon - she will sort it out when she is ready ...

As a teacher - I tend to toilet TIME students rather than toilet TRAIN them - ie. you choose some times (7am.. 8:30... 10am.. 11:30... 12:30.. 2.. 3pm etc.. or every hour if you like.. ) - take the child to the toilet at these times EVERY DAY (for at least a week!!)

if you do that... and go bezerk when they have a success.. they tend to put two and two together... it is amazing what applause and the occasional smartie will do for a kid :D

my son is 3 and we have been toilet training for about 3 months now...
At first we used a potty because he was to scared of the big toilet. and we just take him every 2 hours or so to use it. and he did most time . but when he needed to go he wouldnt tell us and would pee in his pants and then tell us... and he doesnt tell anyone when he needs to do a poo either.
the day care centre we take him to he uses pull ups but im pretty sure he doent use the toilet there.

anyways we have progressed from the potty to the "big toilet" sitting down though. and he holds onto his pee till we take him so not many accidents now but he still wont tell us when he needs to go. and defintatly doesnt say when he needs to do a poo.

i dont know where to go from here... is there a way i can encourage him to tell me when he needs to use the loo? i tell him to make sure to tell mummy or daddy when you need to go but he doesnt. untill it is to late.

I found the combinations of warm weather, briefs, plastic (and therefore washable) sandals and outside play was a good combination to start the ball rolling for TT.

Ha ha I'm a nasty mum! When I was tt my boys, I bought them special "big boy" undies with spiderman and bob the builder on them. Hmm, but then I told the boys that spiderman and bob didn't like getting wee'd on, so they would really like it if they would use the toilet!

LOL it worked fabulously!I mean if they had an accident, they had an accident- no big deal. But I think it helped that they were thinking of not weeing on the character more than using the toilet!

Also I loved pull-ups for tt at night, hmm and used the same trick "mickey mouse doesnt like being wee'd on blah blah blah". I know I'm nasty! Every child will have accidents but if you don't make a big deal of it they'll be ok. Also throwing a little party helps too! We baked cakes and wore party hats if they used the toilet by themselves!

The price of them...whoa!! That put me off, plus Mac just got lazy thinking that they were just like nappies. I put her into little knickers and we only had a few accidents, but so what....thats no biggy. Now she goes nude alot of the time...i try and get knickers on her, but she just keeps taking them off as well as her shirt!! I'm not really worried as she hasn't totally got the hang of getting to the toilet all the time, so its easier if she doesn't have to stop and take her undies off first...

I had a similar problem when I first started training my 2nd...thank goodness now she has the hang of it and is toilet trained both day and night!

Do you have an Aldi store near you? Their training pants are just as good but much cheaper!

She'll get there...seems like forever but one day she'll surprise you!

Kaitlyn started wearing knickers during the day just before she turned 2.She hardly ever had accidents, though refused to do #2's on the toilet. Then the weather got cooler and she started to want nappies all the time.I never pushed the issue, figuring that it was just a phase, and she will be back in knickers pretty soon.Anyway she got to being 2 yrs and 9 mths and still in nappies.I was just about to have Madison, and was changing Blakes nappies as well.

We then decided to use pull ups.The one thing they did make her do was to start doing #2's in the toilet.Which was great timing as it was only 6 weeks before Madison was born that i didnt have to change Kaitlyn's dirty nappies. At first she was using them as knickers, and going to the toilet, but then realised they werelike nappies and become lazy. She would be talking to me then suddenly say "oops the wee's came out" and want another pull up.Only at home though, for some reason at daycare she would always go to the toilet. We were going through 3 packets a fortnight.Which isnt a cheap alternative at all considering the other 2 are in nappies too.

2 weeks ago i ran out and told her i didnt have any.I sent her to day care with knickers and a nappy for sleep time. She didnt have any accidents and was fine with the nappy for sleep time.So now thats what we do.We have the occasional fight about her wanting to wear a nappy during the day,but after a while she gives in and puts on knickers.Hopefully this is it for us!.Now we have the joy's of TT with Blake soon, though he is only 15mths now,so might still be a while off
