Hey
Was wanting some opinions from others about small dogs ie: Mini Foxie
I want a small dog that will get along with my son etc.
So Ladies what small dogs do you have and what are the pro and cons?
Thanks

Others will disagree, but we've got a Jack Russell name 'Vern' who is absolutely fantastic with the boys (ages 5 and 2).
Wherever the boys are, Vern's right behind them. The three of them get in the sandpit and all dig for hours!
We got him as a pup (for Jesse's 4th birthday) so he's always been with kids...and knows his place in the family.
we had a mini foxie. IMO they are selfish and want to be babied/centre of attention. all the foxies I have known have also been quite moody and had a tendency to nip at everyone.(sometimes very hard)
IMO they are one of the worst breeds to choose for a family with young kids.
they want to be spoilt all the time.
I also had a sh!tzuXmaltese he was beautiful well tempered and lovely with the kids. I was told they are one of the best family dogs and even Don Burke recommends them.
sadly, he got killed by our neighbours dog.
they are the only two small breeds I have had experience with.
personally, I would get a cat:D

I have a bit of a soft spot for Jack Russell Terriers.
Pros:
Loyal & loving
You can get short haired ones which don't shed much
Friendly
Very easy to train
Great for small houses or yards
Make excellent indoor dogs, but can just as well live outside
Easy to look after
Have a long life-span
Cons:
Can be yappy
Need to be trained
Need a lot of exercise (although this can just involve a lot of playing! :D)
As woth all dogs, they will need to be watched around children
Also, check out this site: Dog Match (http://www.dogmatch.com.au/) You just enter the sort of things you have/want and it will give you a list of suitable breeds.
ETA: Actually, This (http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet/dogselectapet.html) is the link you'll need (it's part of the same site), but the other one is good to look at as well. This link here though is the actual dog-matching thing I was after.
Interestingly, I just did it for my family & two of the breeds suggested are my dogs!! :D So it definitely works!

They're just go go go dogs...and the great thing is, playing with the boys in the backyard all day is quite enough exercise for little Vernie!
One of the pro's - the short hair not shedding...not true! We've got hair all over the place, whereas my brother's Jackie 'Clem' has the longer more coarse coat and he doesn't really shed at all.

I have a pure bred shih-tzu that is great with MJ. She has nipped at another baby a few years ago but he was hitting her constantly & she was just warning him to back off  She doesnt bark much, only when she hears us come home, & doesnt shed her hair as long as its brushed every few days

Actually MD, you're right, I should clarify.
There are varieties of the short haired breed you can get that don't shed. Some of the short haired ones shed like maniacs!! Kinda like our labby!!

Yep, that's Vernie...he's got the same length/type of coat as a lab...I'm forever cleaning up his hair!!!!:banghead:
We had a long haired Shepherd that didn't shed this much!

i have a mini foxie.
hes 5 now.
hes been a great dog.
he loves playing with kids, and is always friendly towards people.
he does bark at things outside, and people that knock on the door he growns and braks and looks quite scary fro a small dog.
but once your inside hes no problem. and he does like to be the centre of attention.
Hes also very obbessive with having his toys around, he sit there sometimes and just squeaks his toys for hrs (lucky i can tune it out) and he loves to chase things.
hes is always on the go i swear he doesnt stop.
i'd definatly reccommend the breed if your willing to keep them occupied, as they have heaps of energy.
we also have a mini foxy...shes a nutcase LOL but shes great with zara! Zaras not exactly gentle yet Mishka doesnt give a damn:laughing:

I think maltese terriors are a good dog to have, all the maltese or maltese xs that I know are pretty gentle dogs. I wish my dog was like that but he is a kelpy x (also a pup) and its in his nature to be a but rough iykwim, hopefully he will calm down soon.

i have a small dog but not so small he gets under your feet he is called a lowchen and is the second one i have owned they are very playful and will also curl up and go to sleep on your lap. or a beagal is pretty good a little bigger but still great with kids
will try to pm you a pic
i have chihuahua x Foxie and a Foxie and there the most placid dogs i know, there very quiet, and they jsut laze around the house there only quiet young and great with my 11 month old they play together all the time.. Although when we go out Bell the chihuahua collects anything thats on the floor clothes etc and puts em in her bed then goes to sleep on them funny little thing.. THey dont shed that much hair usually only 2 a year.. But i cannot fault them one bit. THey can be as active or as inactive as i want hehe if i go out side and play there active if im inside lazing around so are they hehe  Also they play with each other and keep themselves occupied great to have two dogs i have found..

Maltese, Bichons and shi-tzu's are good family/kid dogs. If you dont mind something bigger golden retrievers are great too. They will sit there and be punched, pulled, spat on, the lot! And not do anything
*NB By NO MEANS am I endorsing a dog being punched pulled or spat! Animals are the best people! :D
Hi there,
We have an Amerian Cocker Spaniel.....
He is WONDERFUL with the kids and not a large dog by any means - but not as small as the Mini Foxies...
Anyway - couldn't recommend them high enough!
All the best

Thanks everyone!!! Ive found a puppy that i like :smiliedance: its a chihuahua- very small
Just gotta twist hubbys thumb  and hopefully she'll be ours. She will have to go on a plane from perth to gold coast.
Also is it better to have a male or female dog???
we hav a mini foxie. she's very good around DS. very playful abd not selfish at all as another person said. she is very affectionate and she's very protective of DS. she runs to him to see if he is ok whenever he cries after he hurts himself etc. they are a bit yappy but otherwise a great dog.

I have a female dog, it depends if your going to get it desexed well i find any is good. As i have previously had male dogs , they like to pee on everything! where females get in season (not nice). So u have a bit of negative between both. But i guess any dog can be trained.
