View Full Version : meat safe cot
Has anyone heard of a meat safe cot and if so where to get one?
Are they still considered safe? I know I was put in one as a kiddy - but that means nothing these days - I was also put on my stomach tp sleep from birth!
In the words of Pauline Hanson - please explain??!!!
Is a meat safe cot a cot made from a meat safe, or a cot thats safe to put meat in?
????? confused too. Is that when you put your bub to sleep in their cot and say 'goodnight little sausage?'
Hi its called a safety or meatsafe cot..no bars, nothing to get caught on,in,under or around, fully insect proof AND it has a lid to stop the dummys/bottles and kids escaping at all hours..lol...they were very popular in the 1950's and have varied designs, mine had solid ends [some dont] and fly wire panels around the sides and on top..a wonderful invention - particulalry for hot queensland summer baby ( which I was)
Hey, my family had one of these, it had been used all through the family. When I was pg with DS it was offered to me, but I said no thankyou. My sister decided that she would use it, they pulled it out and it the wood on it just about crumbled! It was at least 60 years old! I don't know if they are made any more - you might be able to find one second hand but I don't know how good and safe the condition would be! If it was in good condition I don't see how there would be any safety issues, I mean it's pretty much just flywire.

I have never heard of them either. Have you tried e-bay. They might have them.
To me they sound a bit like a portacot. You could try this and drape a insect net over the top to stop the insects. My daughter sleeps in one and i find it good as when she rolls over, she bounces off the sides and it doesn't wake her up. I will have to think of something new soon as she is learning how to climb out of it.
Good luck.

I don't know where to get them. I just did a quick google and couldn't find anything. Perhaps you could email the ebay person and ask them where they got it from....
Hey Boomtish - thats sort of what its like - mine was on legs but good idea about emailing the e-bayer! Will give it a go! :)
Hi Lucy,
I have a Meatsafe cot that i bought many years ago, i have restored it & it has a new foam Matress as well. It has only been slept in once, it has only really been for show for all my good teddy bears. I dont relly want to get rid of it but i no longer have room to keep it. Let me know if you are still looking for one.
There's about an hour left on this one on ebay

I don't know that they would meet safety standards nowadays though.
If you are buying an old meatsafe cot ,be careful to check that the paint is not lead based as alot of things were back when they were made.
