Sorry, this is completely off topic but I know a number of you cloth mummas also sew your own nappies so might be able to give me some advice on sewing machines. I am getting one for Christmas and just want something basic that can do the main things you need but not too fancy or over-priced. I'm thinking of a J*nome at the moment that is $299. Are these okay? Any other suggestions?

Hi,

I think that buying a sewing machine or overlocker is really down to personal choice. I have a Br*ther sewing machine and recently purchased a T*yota overlocker. I suggest you shop around, and don't be too afraid to ask for a demonstration, so you know what features there are.

PS...Spotlight are having a sale on machines, good if you have a VIP card!!!

HAPPY SEWING!!!!!

Hi Mel...

I've had my good old Janome since I was 18 and she is still going strong!

I have a J*nome, have had a Brother, J*nome IMO are better. My mum actually sells them and I was talking to an independant machine repair man one day. He services all machines, he said that Janome have about 90% of the market, but out of all the machines he fixes only about 20% of the ones he has to fix are Janome . In other words they are the most reliable brand.
Anyway it is up to personal preference.
The reason my mum chose to sell them over all the others is that she has had one for over 25 years and it's still going strong

My advice is to get a top loading machine, they are easier to thread, and you can get more of a variety of feet if you want to add them later

I had a Janome Mystyle for about 12 years.. great little machine., Nice and reliable and not too much.
I expect you could get one for $300.

Why don't you wait until after Xmas and get one on sale? Either get one cheaper or upgrade. Put a photo of a machine under the tree for Xmas day.

Or try ebay.. people buy machines al the time and never end up using them, you can get great bargains from there.

I now have a Brother more expensive model and I love it.

Just make sure yyou get a brand that has reliable after sales servicing.

Also, the Sewing machine Warehouse do great deals on machines and overlockers.

With making napies, you don't really need an overlocker as the materials don't frey.

have fun sewing!
