View Full Version : OMG my cat just had kittens what do i do???
My cat has just given birth to 2 kittens.. I have moved it inside as it was an outdoor cat and it seems to be content but is there anything else i should be doing... i only found out it was pregnant like 2 weeks ago and had no idea when she was due! This cat showed up about a month ago and after numerous found ads with no luck we decieded to keep it and now we have kittens!!! Never owned a cat before so any help with this situation would be great:thumbsup:

It sounds like its her first litter, the litter being so small, make sure that she is placed in a comfortable place with a towel where she cant be disturbed, just keep checking on her to see if she's feeding the kittens and make sure that she has plenty of water and food. That's what we do at YAPS for new mummy cats
i have set her up on a cushion in the laundry and brought her food inside, she seems to have cleaned them up and they look like they are feeding. Will i need to set her up a litter box inside now or will she still go outside like before?

It's probably best to keep her in for a while until she gets a bit more settled down....how cute i wanna see pics of the babies
for sure in a couple of days or so i will take some photos and post em here for ya!

I loved it when we had kittens :)
Keep them safe inside and bring in the kitty litter and just make sure shes safe and happy. Cats are very good at bringing up their kittens themselves, with both our litters the mother has toilet trained them. One thing id watch out for is their eyes, its quite easy for kittens to get eye infections when they're young and if they seem gooey at all bathe them in salt water but besides taht just enjoy them!
Oh and also try not to hold them and touch them for as long as you can because the mother gets quite territorial.
thanks for that she just had another one so thats 3 now... she seems to be doing really well... my son watched one being born it was so cute he was like " baby cat baby baby" and told him they were "kittens" and he was like "no baby cat mum!!!"
we are up to 4 kittens now!!! i have taken some photos

Ok stay calm hehehe dont worry this happened with me, twice
Dont touch the kittens !!!!!!!
She may decide to disown them if so.
Cats usually dont have dramas with their labours so just let her labour in peace as long as she is safe. She will come see you when she has rested & tended to them. She will more than likely want to stay in that spot because the kittens are so young so if it is safe keep her there & let her be put water, food & some kitty litter close by so she doesnt have to wander far.
Also dont be suprised if a kitten "dissappears" if it dies she will probably eat it. Yep gross but thats nature my cat ate 2 of her first litter & 1 of the second they were all stillborn.
In a week or so the kittens will start to wander so again you need to be able to keep them safe so they cant get into trouble or hurt themselves.
They wont be ready to eat for many weeks yet but i suggest you contact either your vet or check out all the details online for the time line of things. I just had them eating sofened dry food soaked overnite in cat milk it was a slow transition but its pretty amazing how they figure it all out. Once they are eating they will need kitty litter nearby there will be a few accidents but they are amazing in that watching mum helps them understand to use it & mums teaches too ! Before then while breastfeeding mum will clean them which inturn makes them wee etc which she cleans up !
Tis an amazing thing to watch
The kittens wont be ready to go to new homes until they are at least 6wks but i suggest 8wks myself they seem a lot calmer & sure of themselves by then.
Good luck :D
thanks all so much for your help today! i had no idea!! god how i love bubhub!

Congratulations on becoming a grandma
I'm also in Perth and work in a vet, where we have an adoption program for kittens/cats. We are pretty full atm, but may have space by the time they are ready to go. Just PM me if you have any troubles re homing them !

i got a kitten from a private shelter the lady was worried she wasnt eating properly after watching her for a few day i realised the same thing
i got some weet bix and egg mixed with a bit of water and i kept dipping her nose in it
so she could lick it off
worked a treat i did ths for about 4 days
and she started eating properly
ive done this with other kittens and pups
sometimes it can take up to a week
just for future reference when they start to wean
if they arent feeding very well

I haven't been able to get close enough to the kittens yet! The mum is so protective, gets all hissy if anyone comes near her babies, although yesterday I had to get close because she had kicked two of the babies out of the nest and left one in there..it had died:no: We had a funeral held outside with the kids and the baby, DH dug the grave and buried the little baby under the tree. So, now we have two babies left. Mum seems to be doing well after we put the two kittens back inside the cat box and put mum with her babies, she's now gone back to taking care of them again, thank gawd! I was getting worried that she would abandon them, she was really distraught yesterday for loosing one of her kittens. The closest I can get for a photo is this one

Sorry about it not being a good picture, but if I get any closer she'll bite me LOL

oh she is so beautiful, I hate to say it but I get more clucky over kittens then babies! Unfortunately it is quite common for kittens to die :crying:
We used to feed our kittens weetbix mixed with egg and water after a few weeks (?). But we would just put the food out and they would go to it when they wanted to start solids. Dont worry cats have this thing sussed, mummy cat will just feed the kittens and clean them etc. You just have to worry that mummy has enough food and water and kitty litter and try to keep her somewhere private.
How exciting!
Our cat had kittens a while ago they're like 6 weeks now and their really ANNOYING!
Dh want to keep them all and she had 4 so thats 5 cats we have, I touched them straight away but i suppose i've have my kitty for ages and she lovves me:D they are so cute when the are really little!
Good luck with them and remember to feed mama cat more than usual and keep her fluids up they are just like us when the are feeding the babies she needs all the vitamans and fluids she can get and try her on kitten food cause there is heaps more good stuff in that than the adult food. :yelclap:for ur kitty how everything goes well!
These are my beautiful grandkitties!!! The mother is really friendly and although we are not trying to pick them up, they have fallen out of the nest a couple of time and she doesnt mind when we pick them up... Lucky so far none have died:fingerscrossed:
Shellyt i think we have got homes for at least 2 now but if im have trouble i will def pm u! :D

Cluck Cluck Cluck! My cat had 5 kittens and I was the happiest grandma in town!! Mumma cat wouldn't let me out of her sight during labour and was fine with me touching them - but noone else!! It was a lot of work as the kittens grew, but such a rewarding experience for us. We found homes for three kittens, one passed away and we kept one !! got mumma cat desexed ASAP!! but she went right back to feeding after the op! so we have an almost 3 month old boy still feeding from his mumma - how cute!! I luv my grandkitty!
