If you're like me you sing constantly ALL day and grow tired of singing the same dull verses of nursery rhymes.

DH and I have taken to inventing amusing (to us) new verses or researching less known verses to nursery rhymes.

I am keen to expand my repoirtoire so I don't go mental (too late??) so am keen to hear what you sing to yr child?

I will start off with the verses of twinkle twinkle we sing to amuse ourselves.

Twinkle twinkle little star
Daddy drives a motor car
pull the chain and press the choke
off we go in a cloud of smoke

Twinkle twinkle giant moon
won't you brighten Eli's room
up above the world so high
like a beautiful, circle in the sky
twinkle twinkle giant moon
won't you brighten Eli's room!

Twinkle twinkle little star
Mamma thinks you will go far
Whether you're a cop or a marine biologist
with parent's like us you'll need a psychologist!
twinkle twinkle little star
mamma thinks you will go far!

Any others?

Ds loves the alphabet. I know sign language too, so we do it together. He just kind of claps and waves a lot. (He might be waving at me to stop... hehe, not sure)

hi i sing lots to my kids too. cooper loves 'gallump went the little green frog' '5 little ducks' and 'twinkle twinkle little star' (his version just makes your heart melt :) ) i mostly sing little songs that i just make up, silly words that rhyme, or insert there names into well known songs, ie 'hey there tilly girl flying through the sky so fancy free (this is usually sung whilst zooming her over my head in my arms :) ) everywhere you go your always making somebodies day, a special day, hey there tilly girl' well you get the drift. also like singing 'blue eyed boy' (instead of brown eyed girl ) to thomas, 'little ray of sunshine' 'you are my sunshine' etc they like the silly ones best i think :)

Hey coopsntilly, can you write down the words to the little green frog song? I've been curious all week as to how this song goes!!

Also, AJ loves the scarecrow song. I'm a dingly dangly scarecrow with a flippy floppy hat, i can shake my hands like this.. and shake my legs like that ...

Any song with actions are a real hit with my son, like the Hokey Pokey dance. When he was younger it was Round around the garden like a teddy bear...

We're not really big on the nursery rhymes as so many of these are really old fashioned! Ergh...

'Galump (sorry if i spell it wrong!) went the little green frog one day, galump went the little green frog.

Galump when the little green frog one day, and the frog went glump glump glump(finding it hard to spell this how it actually sound!)
But.....we all know frogs go La di da de da, (usually accompanied by clapping or waving of hands to and fro :) )la di da de da, la di da de da, we all know frogs go (another clap or opening of hands)la di da de da, they dont go glump glump glump'

Hope that helps :)

I test my rhyming creativity with Hush little baby. Now that dd knows so many cd's by heart I mostly sing those songs. But I used to resort to christmas carols.

There was a long thread about 4 months ago where a bunch of people racked their brains for nursery rhymes and songs. You can check it out here (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=1499&highlight=nursery+rhymes) I'm sure there are some more favorites out there though!

I try to get away from Nursery Rhymes sometimes too....you know when all you hear in your head is "baa baa black sheep have you any wool" that it's time for a break!
I like to sing a lot of different songs to Libby - I have a lot of Cole Porter, Gershwin, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin and other tuneful classics which have interesting and clever lyrics, and she seems to recognise a lot of them now.
But, like andrewsmum said, anything with actions/movements is always a great hit - like "incy wincy spider", "twinkle twinkle little star" and the like - probably why the Wiggles and Hi-5 are so popular too!!

That's hilarious, I hope you don't mind if I steal it!

I have a bad habit of changing pop songs while we are fishing!
For example poor old Faith Hill's "This kiss" gets turned into "This fish, this fish.......uncatchable!"I had the whole song changed on one trip which myself and boys thought was hilarious! I think Dh may have thought differently though !

We sing Old MacDonald a lot, as you can insert so many different animal names and sounds, it never gets boring. Just don't limit it to farm animals. Does anyone know how an aardvark goes? With a ?? here and a ?? there.

Coopsntilly,

Supermum and I used to walk around the office singing 'The Little Green Frog' all the time, you should have seen the looks we used to get, lol

The Little Green Frog

"Croak, croak!" went the little green frog one day,
"Croak, croak!" went the little green frog.
"Croak, croak!" went the little green frog one day,
And they all went croak, croak, croak!

But we all know frogs go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
We all know frogs go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
They don't go croak, croak, croak.

"Ring, ring!" went the little red phone one day,
"Ring, ring!" went the little red phone.
"Ring, ring!" went the little red phone one day,
And they all went ring, ring, ring!

But we all know phones go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
We all know phones go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
They don't go ring, ring, ring.

"Chuff, chuff!" went the little blue train one day,
"Chuff, chuff!" went the little blue train.
"Chuff, chuff!" went the little blue train one day,
And they all went chuff, chuff, chuff!

But we all know trains go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
We all know trains go,
(clap) Tra la la la la la,
They don't go chuff, chuff, chuff.

as well as...

Little Tommy Green Grass
Went to the cir-cus
Lifted up the can-vas
And saw a monkey's pink...

Now don't be mistaken
And don't be mislead
For Little Tommy Green Grass
Saw the monkey's head!

My grandmother also taught us to say quickly...

I chased a bug around a tree
I'll catch his blood, he knows I will

sounds like

I chased a bugger 'round a tree
I'll catch his bl00dy nose, I will

Ben's fave at the moment is the Bumble Bee song - gross but the kids love it!

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
Won't my Mummy be surprised at me
(Cup hands together as if holding bee)
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
Ouch, he stung me
(Shake hands as if just stung)
I'm squishing up a baby bumblebee
Won't my Mummy be surprised at me
('Squish' bee between palms of hands)
I'm squishing up a baby bumblebee
Squish, squish, squish
('Squish' bee between palms of hands)
I'm licking up a baby bumblebee
Won't my Mummy be surprised at me
(Pretend to lick bee off hands)
I'm licking up a baby bumblebee
Slurp, slurp, slurp
(Make slurping sounds)
I'm throwing up a baby bumblebee
Won't my Mummy be surprised at me
(Stick tongue out and look 'sick')
I'm throwing up a baby bumblebee
Blech, blech, blech
(Make awful face)
I'm sweeping up a baby bumblebee
Won't my Mummy be surprised at me
('Sweep' bee up with one hand into the other)
I'm sweeping up a baby bumblebee
Swish, swish, swish
('Sweep' bee up with one hand into the other)
I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur
Won't my Mummy kick me out the door
(Pretend to be carrying heavy dinosaur)
I'm bringing home a baby dinosaur
Oops, he ate me, I'm no more!

Personally, I'd prefer to sing that Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong or Danny Kaye's Ugly Duckling .... you know:

There once was an ugly duckling
With feathers all stubby and brown
And the other birds said in so many words
Quack Quack Get out
Quack Quack Get out
Quack Quack Get out of town
And he went with a quack and a waddle and a quack
In a flurry of eiderdown

and so it goes on!

I'm glad I'm not the only fool who sings nonsense all day. I'm starting to worry that Jo will think that "normal" people communicate through song and that she'll get teased. We change the words too to say what we want them to but my poor kid probably won't know any proper songs. Too late I guess.

My favourite one at the moment is the one that my DH sings to her to the tune of "Lazybones" (the real words are Laaazybones, sittin in the sun, how ya gonna get your days work done? Never get your days work done, sittin in the noonday sun). He sings "Little Jo, weein in your pants, how ya gonna get a partner for the dance? Never get a partner for the dance, if you keep on weein in your pants". The best bit is the blank looks she gives him while he's singing it!

If I'm stuck for ideas, playschool CDs are really good and also a guy called Mike Jackson has some great kids albums - it's REAL music as opposed to the trash some people try to pass off to poor defenceless kiddies!

Lucy

PS some of our favourites are -
3 jellyfish
3 little speckled frogs
When I was 1 I ate a bun
The grand old duke of york
