My DD has started to grizzle when she's tired and i've tried to give her a dummy but she spits it out. The only way to get her to sleep is if she's attached to my breast. She obviously isn't hungry, she just wants to suckle like it's a dummy, then she falls asleep. Im fine with it except when I go to put her in her bassinette, she screams and wants to be held and put on the breast.

My question is do they grow out of it? Also, is it common for BF babies to reject the dummy? She obviously likes the sucking but prefers mummy's nipple! What to do?????

She might actually find her thumb soon!

Both my BF babies rejected dummies when I tried them in moments of desperation.

DD1 wasn't that sucky anyway, but DD2 found her thumb when she was 8 weeks old and hasn't stopped sucking it since :p (Until she found it though I just had to put up with her using my nipple as a dummy)

Maybe I could put her thumb in her mouth? Would that be bad? She's on my nipple right now doing her thing.

lol I hated the idea of dummies, but I have the opposite problem, Cobey prefers his dummy to his mummy :crying:

Even now, at least once a week, I have to shove his dummy in his mouth, then really quickly pull it out and shove my boob in when he's upset and hungry.

Leila's mummy - I dont think it would be bad. You could try and see if she takes to it.
There are lots of people who say thumb-sucking is hte worst habit to get them into though so be warned!

it takes time for bubs to get used to things, Lisa :) she may eventually get used to the thumb or dummy.

Cobey used to suck my finger until I buckled and got the dummy (took 4 weeks) at first I had to hold my fist in front of it and ween him off holding my fingers. he now holds a teddy. :)

Maybe you can retry the dummy but have her close the the boob while you do it so she's still having that close to boob sucking sensation.

My son was never a huge dummy fan, but he used one sometimes. While I preferred to feed him rather than give him a dummy wherever possible, he would feed to sleep and then refuse to let go of my boob no matter how unconscious he seemed.... I found feeding him to sleep and then replacing my boob with the dummy once he fell asleep worked well. Sometimes ;)

They do sort of grow out of it. He still does it now at 2.5 years old, but I find it easier to get the boob away from him now than when I did when he was really young - and he gave up the dummy on his own at about 8 months or so.

my dd is the same late at night. she wont take a dummy when i put it in her mouth she scrunches her face up and chews on it a bit and then spits it out with her tounge.

The last couple of days I have just stopped her doing it cause my boobs where just too sore and I was just so sick of having them out 24/7 it was making me feel like I couldnt keep b/f

now when she is grizzly I wrap her up tightly( she doesnt always like this) and rock her ,she just dozes off just like she does on the breast now and when i put her to bed cause shes not sucking so she doesnt wake up like when you pull the nipple out I just stop rocking her for a while and then put her in her bassinette she has gone straight to sleep it worked for me. you could give it a try she did whinge for a bit at first but not long. I hope she stops it soon I know the feeling

Hi Lisa

Have you tried a different dummy? There are dummies out there that are shaped to have a feel more similar to the nipple. I am not sure what they are I must be honest - but others on here will know!
I didn;t give my DS a dummy until he was about 8 weeks old and he spat his out too but I knew he was a 'comfort suckler' so I would try and put it back in. It wasn't that he was objecting to the dummy of course, he was just used to being able to stop sucking and the boob staying put whereas when he stopped with the dummy, it would fall out. (If that makes any sense at all!)

DS has never had a dummy, he is 5 months today happybirthday and falls asleep at the breast every time he has a nap or goes down to sleep for the night. I know there are other ways to get him to sleep as I have tried them before and they all work...however I enjoy taking 1/2 hour out of my busy day to lie down and feed him to sleep (It helps that he doesnt really have a cot ATM so I dont have to move him once he is asleep).

I time his sleeps and feeds so he only feeds when he is going down for a sleep...it just works out perfectly for us...then im not wasting time feeding him to sleep cause he is due for a feed anyway IYGWIM...not that I think its a waste of my time...as I said I really enjoy it...

yes it is comon. try the cheap cherry shaped ones it was the only ones my second would take. the first didn't want or need one. also best and lest have rially good snuggles pink elifant for girls and are the best. this sounds strange but rub it all over you and bf (little) on it can help her to relaxce. but dont let her always go to sleep on bf as you will have to always do it. just put her in bed and she will settle.
