I have just got together with my SIL who is throwing a baby shower for me. We have come up with the following ideas so I thought I would share them (to give some ideas) as it's hard to know where to start.

Gifts Ideas for the mum-to-be;
Thermometer
1 pair of baby nail scissors or clippers
Baby hairbrush set
Baby wraps/towels with hoods
Lotions for bathtime, nappy change etc
Newborn toys; Rattles, teething rings etc
Toys for pram/pusher
Newborn pacifiers (dummies)
Baby clothes in larger sizes
Cloth bibs and disposable bibs
Socks or booties
Baby dishes, cups and cutlery
Baby books
Square terry towelling nappies to use as burp cloths

Ideas for games;
1) Wrap up various baby items in brown paper, pass them around and everybody has to feel and guess what's in the parcels.
2) Pin the dummy on the baby whilst blind folded (like pin the tail on the donkey). The one closest to the mouth wins a prize.
3) Everybody brings a photo of themselves as a baby or child and has to guess who is who.
4) Guess what the sex and weight of the baby will be at birth. (The mum-to-be will take them home and the winner gets announced later).
5) The expectant mother stands in the middle of the room and all the guests get a chance to get a good look at her belly. Next, a spool of ribbon/string is passed around and all the players cut off the amount of ribbon that they think will go around her belly exactly. The person closest to it wins a prize.
6) Everyone writes their name on a card or envelope which goes in a hat. At the end of the day you draw a winner for a lucky door prize.
7) Give every guest a clothespin to attach to her clothing and wear during the shower. Tell everyone not to say the word "baby" for the rest of the shower. If someone hears another guest say the forbidden word (and it's hard not to say it!), she gets to take the other guest's clothespin(s). The winner is whoever has the most clothespins at the end of the shower.
8) This is one of those verbal memory games in which you add onto the list until it becomes too long to remember. The first player starts by saying the name of an item that would normally be found in a nappy bag. The second player says that item plus one of their own. Each subsequent person must say everything already mentioned, in the proper order, and then add one more item. If you forget an item or say them out of order, you're "out." The last person still in the game is the winner.
9) Pass around a jar full of baby safety pins, cotton buds or similar. The one who guesses the closest wins a prize.
10) Have each woman write down in 5 minutes all the songs that have baby in their titles (i.e., baby love, santa baby, one for my baby). You can make it harder by stating that you have to name who also wrote the songs!

This one is not a game, but you could also do the ring on a string test to determine the sex of the baby.

Suggestions for game prizes;
Chocolates and lollies
Make up eg lip gloss, nail polish etc
Bubble bath
Soaps
2007 address book/calendar for handbag
Candles
Photo frame
Coffee mugs

Usually nibblies and soft drinks are supplied by the hostess.

I was give these two items as gifts for my baby shower's. And I love them so much I give them to my friends when they have their showers. The first one is very cute little baby shoes, and a baby wrap.

Looks like I might be too late in responding but thought I would share anyway...
I currently have a lot of friends expecting their first child. I was trying so hard to think of a great gift idea that was practical, but also unique. It was then that I stumbled across the idea of a nappy cake!
Nappy cakes arent all that common here in Australia, so I began my search to figure out how to do one! I ended up finding a lot of instructions online, but in the end I purchased some online videos that showed me and steped me through each stage of 'building' the cake. The website is here if you are interested: How to make a diaper cake (http://76c99j8d5xva0b8oc6l1901v8u.hop.clickbank.net/)
I have so far made 3 diaper cakes using the rolled up method - on each of them I have used Huggies. the great thing about huggies is they are coloured which helps tie in with the theme of a boy or girl and they look really nice when all rolled up! I also used the 'infant' size nappy which is 4-8 kg. this ensures the mum-to-be doesnt have to un-ravel all the nappies at once, but rather it can be done after bub comes home if need be. You can also use a cheaper nappy if you wanted to.
It turned out to be relatively easy once i knew what i was doing, and can be fairly inexpensive, depending on how many nappies are used. The mum-to be was so impressed, as were the guests - and such a practical gift!
Also, as something different for baby shower games prizes, I made some cupcakes out of facewashers. I got my inspiration from this site:
http://www.pompomemporium.com/content/how-make-a-cupcake-a-washclothfaceclothflannel
however, i used two different coloured facewashers (pink and white) to tie in with the theme of the shower. the guests loved getting something different for a prize, and something that to them was also practical.

I would like to introduce myself. I am a new business in Sydney.

I specialise in making nappy cakes for baby showers, new mums to be eg leaving work to go on maternity leave and new arrivals of bubs eg hospital visits.

If you know anyone who is pregnant or you work with anyone who is pregnant and about to go on maternity leave I can help you out!

Please look at my photos to see my range. New ranges are coming as we speak. But for now its just my Standard and Deluxe ranges.

Nappy Cakes are a great practical gift and will last a while unlike flowers which die after a few days. Every ingredient in the nappy cakes are usable.

If there's anything you want added, or anything taken off I can customise to your liking and also the colours can be customised to suit you.

Please email me at nappycakesydney@hotmail.com

Also check out my facebook page and add me http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003086077824

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi

I'm probably a bit too late as well though I thought I'd share what I organised for a baby shower last year - basically, I organised the catering and another friend organised games, invitations/RSVPs etc. I really didn't have a lot of spare time though at this point in my life so I couldn't make everything from scratch. The catering was easy - a lolly buffet, plus a few bottles of champagne and some jugs of non-alcoholic punch. The company I used is in Brisbane and was great - everything is delivered and picked up afterwards, meaning very little cleaning, and I could choose from a few options for sweets. The woman who did it even gave me a recipe for the fruit punch which is absolutely amazing.

Anyway, it all went down really well, everybody loved the sweets, plus I got some little take home bags so that everyone could pack their own "party bag" before they left. I think quite a few of the people there have used the same company since then and everyone seems really happy. The company is called Let's Do Lollies and they've got a website open now: http://letsdolollies.blogspot.com.
