Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone has had trouble with feeding potatoe. I thought it was meant to be fairly well tolerated but I suspect it may have caused a reaction in my 5 month old son.

The first time I tried it I added just a small amount to his usual pumpkin mash - after a few mouthfuls he threw it all up. I just put it down to too much food too quickly. Yesterday I tried the same thing again (pumpkin and potatoe) and he has now broken out in a rash on his legs and arms.

I took him to the doctor and all she said was that it may be something he ingested - I only just thought of the potatoe now though. I have never had problem with pumpkin on its own...

Any ideas?????

Did you give him any other new foods or drinks? Even a sip of a drink can sometimes be enough.
DS had vegemite when he was about 7mths old and got a rash from it, I'd never heard of anyone reacting to it but we were advised by our doctor not to feed it to him till he was about 2yrs old, by then he should have grown out of the allergy, which he has :)
Can't really offer much more than that I'm afraid. Hope your bub is not allergic to potatos, that could make yoour life very interesting

Hi,

My oldest son had a number of allergies when he was under 2 and now is still allergic to nuts. He came out with a rash around the mouth and mosquito bite looking lumps during a reaction.

You could try avoiding potato for a while and reintroducing it later to see if it causes the same reaction. If you are really concerned then you could try a paediatric allergy speicalist for skin testing. But as you said I think potato is fairly well tolerated and next time you try he may have outgrown it.

Good luck food allergies and avoiding those foods can be hard.

Hi there,
I could be something to do with potatoes being part of the deadly nightshade group. If you do a google search for deadly nightshade you will find heaps of info.
I didn't give my dd potatoes until after 9 months because of this.
