i am taking metformin, which my GP put me on last cycle, where i got my BFP, but then had a m/c. I am losing weight, and i guess the metformin is helping, its ment to regulate the hormones that are out of wack suggesting PCOS (i dont have the cysts)

Hi
I have been on metformin for a couple of months now as I have pcos. As I was bf when I first when on I had to start at a very low dose. I have now stopped bf and have upped my dose so am anxious to see if it helps with weight loss. I can keep you posted if you are interested and it would be great to hear about other people on metformin and their success stories etc.

Has anyone been prescribed it even though they are not technically overweight?
I am within the healthy BMI range, although the higher end and therefore have never been tested for IR. Despite eating a very healthy diet and going to the gym 4 times a week for the last 2 years i have only lost 7kg and that was in the first 6 months... since that (1.5years) i have not lost any! Grrr.. (and i measure my body fat % also and this has not changed really either) I have weight i want to shift on my legs and but however it just wont budge... im wondering if IR could be a cause and if Metformin would help me or not? Im getting very frustrated with putting all the work into my diet and excersise (while working full time and running ahouse that can be tiring!) and not getting results... :gloomy:
Nicole... how do you get tested for IR? i have pcos and am overweight, i asked my FS about metformin and he said no i dont need it? im going to my dr on the 18th to talk to her about metformin, but id love to know whats involved in getting tested for IR.. cos i never have been... thanks :)
Metformin does not help you lose weight, it controls blood sugar levels and even out your insulin production so the body can metabolise more evenly.
The result of that is weight loss.
BUT you may not see significant weight loss for a couple of months.
The use of metformin for PCOS helps to break the cycle.
It's still important to realise that healthy eating and exercise is the only real way to lose weight, metformin will assist to make that weight loss more reasonable and even.
It's a top drug and has worked for me very well.

Getting tested for IR is just a simple fasting blood test. It can take about 3 days to get the results but if you find you have got it metforimin will help. As said before it is not a weight loss drug but if the body is storing the insulin and not burning it it stays in your fat cells. It also means your metabolism is affected. I was eating especially healthy and walking for 2 - 3 hours a day after I had ds but nothing was working. Before going to the drs I had never heard of IR or metformin and so far I am still waiting for results however it is early days!
Best to get your dr to test you for piece of mind anyway because it did make me feel better knowing it wasn't my fault!

9 years ago I participated in a National Trial of Metformin. No one knew if you would get the tablet or a placebo. Due to some side effects and an immediate viable pregnancy my specialist advised me that I did have Metformin. I am so happy to see it in use today and helping so many people like myself get pregnant.

Just want to add, I was told during the trial that yes it was a diabetic drug but studies had found it to be of assistance in gaining a viable pregnancy when used with clomid.
