Question.. How do you wash you Pocket nappies?? I have washed my Pea-pods but they still seam to have a slight smell of urine or POO.. I just do a normal wash and i use baby washing liquid and baby fabric softener.. Hang them on the line then throw them in the dryer just to soften up..
I have been having to wash them twice or pack on the baby powder to remove the smell.. is there any recommendations to get rid of this?
do u wash in cold water? i have to wash mine in warm water to get the smell out. i dint think you were meant to use fabric softener either?? might be wrong LOL
no, i think you are right- NO fabric softener!!
i think i have heard you can use ess. oil ( a few drops into the washing)....maybe a clothie crack knows more about that...would be interesting, as mine starting to get "the smell" too (and i am washing them on 60- so VERY warm)
Q. Which detergent should I use?
Our preferred detergent is Planet Ark/Aware. Do not use clear or natural soap products as they leave an oily film on the lining and hinder absorption. Do not use fabric softener.
thats off the website

Okie dokie so No fabric softner and a warm wash...
Nappies still smell even after washing
Causes:
Nappies are not getting rinsed enough.
Wash water is not hot enough.
Using too much detergent and/or not rinsing it all out.
Hard water build up.
Solution:
Make sure to remove any solids before the throwing the nappies in the pail. Using a little squirt can make the job easier. Run an extra rinse cycle.
The extra detergent built up in your nappies needs to be removed. Wash the nappy with very hot water and no detergent. Check for suds. Continue washing until suds disappear.
Lessen the amount of detergent used in the future.
Add eucalyptus or tea tree oil to rinse water.
that might help
No softener, half the recommend washing powder and dry in the sun.
thats what I do and I have no smells.

Bingo !
Worst case scenario & i mean worst case because you cant do it all the time as it will wreck the PUL but a vinegar rinse or even some bi-carb thrown in should help also !

Sorry to steal your thread, but if bub doesnt have "solids" in their nappy, do you still need to do the rinse before a wash? I always do a rinse cycle then add detergent & wash, am I just wasting water seeing as MJ always poos in the toilet?
Back on topic, I wash in warm if using the dryer, cold if line drying, with less than half of the detergent & we dont have smelly's.
Personally, Rainbowbrite, I think you're wasting water! In fact, I don't do a rinse cycle before whether they have been poo'ed on anyway. I find they still clean up just as well and it saves water.
Kristi001 - I'd definetly try the 1/4 cup vinegar to your rinse cycle if nothing else works. It's not recommended to be used all the time because it effects the elastic, but occasionally it can be resorted to.
And definetly no fabric softener. Fabric softener leaves a plastic layer on your nappies, and clothes for that matter, that decreases the absorbtion. It also leaves chemicals on your clothes, so a 'no no' on nappies.
Use 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent to wash your nappies aswell. Like Zarasmum I use Planet Ark/Aware, totally natural but washes just as good as the other stuff.

Is it the hemp stuffers or the pockets that smell?
Put the stuffers thru with vinegar in the rinse cycly, but don't put the pockets in as it will wreck the PUL!
Rainbow Brite - I wouldn't do a pre-rinse if there's no poo!

your not suppsed to use fabric softer as it reduces the absorbancy of the nappy
try the vinegar

You can occasionally put PUL through a rinse of vinegar but only VERY occasionally! It won't damage it if you're only doing it every now and then when desperate measures are needed. It will ruin it, however, if you're doing it all the time.
Oh, and :smiliedance: for less water Rainbowbrite!! I wonder if you'll notice it in your next water bill?:detective:

Does sun really help with smell? That's amazing if it does!

it seems to. I've never found my peapods to be smelly so I guess it does help - it might be the fresh air and the fact that my herb garden lives under the clothes line!!

I try to use a liner to reduce the amount of poo on a nappy. But if there is I wash it off immediately. Then I dry pail the nappies. I wash everyday. First I cold rinse everything. Then I wash with omo sensitive. Followed by hanging up in the sun.
so far no stains or smells.
