Hi, has anyone got any tips/ideas for going camping wih young children? Ours are 4 and 6 months and we plan to go camping next weekend. We are not very experienced campers and have certainly never been since having kids. Any handy hints would be greatly appreciated.

You guys are so brave!

My husband and I love to camp but haven't been since I was about 6 months pregnant. Our dd is now 8 months and the thought of watching her every second as she picks everything up and puts it in her mouth to experience her new world does not make me feel relaxed!

I guess it really depends how mobile and independent your children are. Are we talking roughing it camping or luxury and what things are around to do? Look for toilet locations maybe take lots of walks to tire then out so guys get to relax.

Beware the open fire, its probably a great time to teach your 4yo about fire safety stuff - toasted marshmallows yum. Try and check out the campsite some how and be prepared with things to do.

Have fun!

Good luck... let us know how the camping trip goes. I'll also be interested in the responses you get as we to are planning a camping trip in the near future (Adam is 7 months). The first things I intend to pack are his play pen, play mat and his favourite toys.

Thanks for your ideas so far. We are only going about an hour away from home. My parents in law will be there for one whole day - we are planning on going water-skiing - which is always good. Its pretty civilised, toilets etc...

Not too worried about our elder one (although he'll probably be a bit scared at first)
and the baby is not yet crawling so we thought we'd get in a trip before that happens...

I do think, though, that I won't sleep a wink because I'll be constanty checking that they're both still there!

I'll let you know how it goes!

Hi,

We took our first daughter camping in a tent at 8 months (just an overnight trip). Our tent was big enough to fit the portacot so sleeping was not a problem. We made sure we had a nice grassed area for her to crawl around on and she had a ball. The only downside was packing up the next day it was sleep time and no where for her to sleep until we packed the car not a happy camper. We also did not have a fire as the attraction would have been too much as we found when we showed her a neighbours fire!
