Mine was  and I am not considered high risk, but I have seen a thread similar to this one a while back and the responses were very varried. Might be worth a call to Medicare.

The NT scan is not covered unless you are in a high risk category.
In some states/cities you can claim some back from medicare.
Because it isn't a necessary scan they do not fully cover it.
I had a dating scan where my doctor also ordered the NT to be done. I didnt pay a cent.

Yep you need to ring medicare or if you have a referral already ring the place you are going to have the scan done at and they will let you know whether it is going to cost anything.
I was asked a series of questions by the clinic I am haivng my scan at and if I answered yes to any of them then I was covered by medicare. One of the questions was have you a M/C before and I have so it was covered and I only have to pay the gap of like $20.
It seems different everywhere you go though so definately do some ringing around!

Not covered here. I think the gap is $80 actually, which is a bit much but good for peice of mind.
We have always said that if there was a problem we would think about aborting, although it would be a hard decision to make, we'd think about the quality of life for the baby, our other kids and for us.
Thats why we have it done, but it's personal choice whether you get it done or not, as it's not compulsary.

Again it depends where you go and who you talk to. My scan is only $120 and I get a $10 discount for paying on the day and I get over $90 back from medicare so for me I am only out of pocket around $20.
I think it is kinda silly that there are soo many variables when it comes to what is covered and how much the scans cost. There ought to be a set fee for every scan and a set amount that medicare covers but it seems completely different not only in every state or town but at every doctor or clinic, it's crazy and totally unfair on some people who are paying when others aren't!!

My Dr asked me if i would like the have the scan done and explained about what happens in a NT scan. (Even though I knew already from last time)
I said i wanted the scan so he said that he was writing on the referra "Risk of foetal abnormalities"...NOt because he thinks I have risk, infact Im low risk but because if he writes that then I dont get charged for the scan.
I really appreciated that he told me that or I would have freaked thinkin something was risky and wrong with my preg but infact he was doing that so I dont have to pay!
I didnt have to pay last time with DS either for the 8 week dating scan or the NT:no:

I went to the doc who will be delivery the bean and he automatically gave me the forms for NT scan and the 12 week blood test.
Are you considered high risk once you're over 30?
